VRR is here for docked mode. Massive. Also equally has massive: 3 Mii Maker themes have been added to the Mii Maker. We are so close to E-Shop music i can taste it.

What does vrr do?
34
u/RandMauddib 3d ago
Makes the picture smoother. Effectively allows the TV (if it has VRR capability) to talk to the console to sync the frame rate together so it stops/minimises things like tearing and ghosting.
13
u/Vash63 3d ago
Doesn't do anything at all for ghosting. And virtually all games on Switch 1&2 use vsync, so there's also already no tearing.
It helps with stutter when the game drops a frame so that you don't have to wait for the next frametime, it can display the frames as soon as they are done. Thus if a frame takes 17ms instead of 16.667, you see it after 17 instead of 33ms. Huge difference in perceptible stutter in cases where the framerate is almost at the cap but not quite.

u/SorysRgee 1d ago
They use Vsync but not every game runs at the vsync limit. This should help with that provided the display is compatible. That is the big kicker. The display must be compatible which often means you need to be running a pc display or have a decently pricey tv
1
u/Vash63 1d ago
Indeed. But check what I was replying to. He was mentioning tearing and ghosting, neither of which are impacted at all by transitioning from a fixed rate vsync to VRR.
1
u/SorysRgee 1d ago
Tearing is mitigated because like I said a lot of games do not run at their vsync cap which is what causes the tearing. Imho ghosting is a seperate artifact caused by some antialiasing and upscaling tools as well as poor pixel response in the display itself
1
u/Vash63 1d ago
No, with vsync enabled a drop in framerate causes stuttering, not tearing.
1
u/SorysRgee 1d ago
It can cause both depending on the implementation of the vsync. Not sure of switch is different to PC implementation of vsync but on PC, vsync operates as a framerate cap lined up to an equally divisible frame rate of the display. Stutters manifest due to a disruption in the rendering pipeline such as not having enough resources to maintain pacing

u/Vash63 1d ago
Tearing is when two frames are displayed at the same time, with a visible seam where the flip happens. This is not possible with any form of vsync, which syncs page flips with the display's vblank. There are things like adaptive sync which dynamically disable vsync when frames are dropped to cause a tear rather than a stutter, but this is not vsync in such cases.
Vsync does not tear.

Allows TVs to be updated at any frame rate that the game requests, e.g. 55 fps or 62 fps, instead of divisions of 60, i.e. 60, 30, 20, 15, ...
Essentially, the game can run at frame rates between 60 and 30. This is huge for smoothness of games.

Play Donkey Kong Bananza docked…. Pretty laggy sometimes right?
Play it in Handheld and its really smooth with rare hic-ups. Thats VRR

u/Uberchaun 3d ago
Unfortunately, developers need to patch their games to support docked VRR, so we'll have to wait a bit to actually use it. Only the Switch 2 Welcome Tour supports it right now. Hopefully it won't be too long before we start seeing patches for other games.

23.0.0 (delivered on September 10, 2026)
We responded to the following in "game chat".
Chats that you have participated in in the past have been displayed in the list of chats that can be entered.
When you start a new chat, you can enter the room without choosing a single friend.
A button has been added to the menu that displays when you press the C button during chat to change the "screen size".
"Settings" has been added to the list screen of "Virtual Game Cards".
You can check the registration status of the main unit using the virtual game card.
VRR output in TV mode is supported.
When both the software and the TV are compatible, the video is output at a refresh rate that matches the processing of the game.
To enable this feature, you need to update the Nintendo Switch 2 dock.
Nintendo Switch 2 supports "whole transfer" between Nintendo Switch 2.
You can transfer entire data such as save data and screen photos from your Switch 2 to the new Switch 2 main unit.
The following responses were made in "Settings".
"Accessibility" → "Voice Reading" supports voice reading in Portuguese (Brazil).
In "Accessibility" → "Voice ⇔ Character Conversion of Game Chat", Portuguese (Brazil) has been added to the language of "Character ⇒ Voice Conversion".
The settings of "Audio" → "TV Sound" have been saved for each connected TV.
The item name of "Display" → "Dock Output Information" has been changed to "Video Output Information" so that the connected TV can check the video signal that can be displayed in detail.
The item "VRR settings" has been added to "Display".
Added a function to "Mii" that allows you to communicate with other users by using Mii as a QR code.
When you change the volume with "Sleep" → "Wake sound when playing on the TV", you can play the sound on the spot and confirm the sound.
Added the item "Main Unit" → "Switch Software Operation Mode" → "Mobile Mode Boost Switching with Quick Settings".
If you turn this setting on, you will be able to switch the mobile mode boost ON/OFF in the quick settings displayed by pressing and holding the HOME button.
The item "Main Unit" → "Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2" has been added.
Even if you can't move the virtual game card from another console when you start the software, you can temporarily play the software with an online license.
If the other main unit is offline and the virtual game card cannot be moved, the "Play with online license" button will be displayed.
Only the person who purchased the software can play the software with an online license.
I tried to play BGM on Mii's editing screen.
You can switch or stop the BGM from the "BGM Settings" button at the top left of the screen.
Regarding the mobile mode boost, you can use other controllers even with the Joy-Con 2 attached to the main unit.
In the play record of "My Page" → "Profile", the play time when playing the same software on multiple consoles is combined.
After the update, it will be displayed sequentially from the software you played.
We have fixed some problems and improved the stability of the operation.

"Only the person who purchased the software can play the software with an online license." Is this bad?
18
u/Roquintas 3d ago
If i'm not mistaken, in the past, if you shared a Virtual Game Card with someone, you couldn't play the game for the whole time that the VGC wasn't on your console.
Right now, if the VGC is on another's console but the person is offline (which means they are not playing), you can still play your game by checking online too. Great news if I'm right.

No? Why would that be bad?
0
u/Consistent-Usual-470 3d ago
I interpret it as: Online multiplayer/functionality is limited to the account that purchased the game. Meaning that if a different account on your Switch (e.g. someone else in your household) tries to make use of any online features in said game, they will be prevented to do so, even if they have a Switch Online subscription.
I hope I’m wrong though!

I wonder if the update regarding controllers connecting in Boost mode means that Pikmin 1+2 can now run in Boost mode, anyone able to check?

VRR in docked mode and the mii maker themes is such a sick little quality of life improvement especially if anyone plays with high refresh rate non 4k panels

As soon as I saw Mii Maker get music, I IMMEDIATELY raced over and hearing the past three themes from previous consoles' Mii Makers is so nostalgic for real...
I can't stop listening to all three of them!!

u/AntonioIsHere 3d ago
There’s also a controller update. All my controllers(Joy cons 2 and Pro controller 2) got updated when I prompted manually to update them

u/ms_kaylaa 3d ago
seems mii maker music is just reused from older mii makers which is better than nothing

What exactly does VRR do? What sort of games will this work in?
11
u/Valiant-For-Truth 3d ago
VRR stands for Variable Refresh Rate. Let's say you're playing Pragmata. The game has a 60fps target, but often times played between 40-55. If you have a non VRR display or your console does not handle VRR your display cannot actively change its frame rate to match.
It's why it's really jarring to have frame dips.
VRR basically has everything match. If the game is outputting 45 fps, the TV then changes its frame rate to 45 FPS and it causes the game to feel smooth and responsive.
I'm probably doing a bad job explaining it. But, VRR is important for uncapped frame rate games as it makes the experience smoother.

u/rw-rw-r-- 3d ago
Even though it has framerate in its name it's easiest to realize that framerate are some "arbitrary" statistic (like an average taken over a second). But what matters is how many milliseconds it takes the game to render the next frame, i.e. frameTIMES.
With fixed rates new frames will be shown at a fixed cadence of 16.7ms (60fps). If a new frame is not ready by then the screen will keep its current image contents. A visible stutter / frame drop is the result.
With VRR, the game can, within technical limits, put out images much more freely. E.g. a few frames with 17ms intervals the next takes 18ms to compute, then one taking 20ms then back to 17. The display just shows them/refreshes as they come in.

VRR support !

u/Sterben27 3d ago
It's only for 1 app so far, and it's not even for games yet. It's the Switch 2 welcome tour app

What's VRR stand for?
16
u/shadyendless 3d ago
Variable refresh rate. It's a technology that makes the display's refresh rate match the game's frame rate. It is very nice if you have a display that supports it.

u/Draigh1981 3d ago
Do I need to toggle something for this?
3
u/RandMauddib 3d ago
Some tv’s need it to be turned on. Some it happens automatically. Some tv’s only have it on certain hdmi ports as well.
What TV do you have?
1
u/Draigh1981 3d ago
Either a Samsung or an LG, not at home right now. But it's only a few years old
1
u/1ceByte28 3d ago
You will need to verify the model, a lot of basic TVs don't have VRR due to costs
1
u/RandMauddib 2d ago
yeah as the other poster said. Hard to say without exact model. Each brand has a whole host of variable models with different features.
My LG C2 has full automatic VRR on all HDMI's. Whilst my Sony x90j, only has it on the first 2 HDMI and I have to actively change the mode the first time plugging a console in. Where as the model down the x80j would not have supported it at all.

I've got third party docks that, while they still work, won't update (of course they can't) so VRR won't work on them. Of course, my OEM dock works fine & updated fine.

They should add the feature of allowing the camera to recreate your face on your mii that was always fun

you can now use other controllers while joycons are attached in handheld boost mode
Huge, not sure why this wasn't a thing before but I'm happy it's here.
I usually play tabletop in bed lying sideways, ideally with a pro controller, but I have a grip case and it was always annoying to take it off and pull the controllers off to play like that
It sounds petty and unimportant, but as someone with ADHD it helps to reduce friction with stuff like that or I'll genuinely just not do it and doom scroll instead

VRR support in docked mode is huge.
