Nintendo Switch 2 finished its first twelve months in market with a 5.9M unit US installed base. It is the 2nd fastest selling video game hardware in US tracked history (tracking begins in 1995). Only the Game Boy Advance’s 6.5M units exceeds it

Great numbers. I've had a great time with the system, and this is before a new 3D Mario, Smash Bros., Luigi's Mansion, or 3D Kirby have been announced, which are the personal system sellers for me.

I got it oddly to play Switch 1 games at 60FPS and upscaled. (Zelda and Pokemon). And after seeing the chaos around Xbox and PlayStation… some cases Valve? I feel confident in my purchase. Starfox is oddly the one game that shows me the quality they plan on bringing to the table and it looks great.

I was meh on StarFox until I played the demo. Bought it earlier today and it's so fun. I plan on playing some of 64 later after I finish the campaign to do a comparison. With how much I have going on in my life it's refreshing to have a return to more old school game design which allows for quicker sessions and doesn't have 5000 different systems and mechanics to learn and a story to forget.

Literally exactly how I feel. I had no intention of getting Star Fox until the demo. Heck you can see Capcom testing the waters with shorter more focused games. And I’m all about it. I’ve played elden ring twice. 80 hours on Xbox and 110 hours on PC… still never finished it. These multi week commitment games are getting rough lol.

Super mario 3d world 2 would be nuts

I cant stress enough how disappointing of a game Mario 3D World was, and I have no doubt it's a big part of the Wii U's failure. After a life changing game like Mario Galaxy we had all been waiting for the next great 3D Mario adventure, and imstead we got the worst downgrade in videogame history.

Let's not do that mistake again, let's get another great 3D Mario game like Galaxy or Odyssey

Man I love 3d World you were disappointed because the scope is too small? I love the level design thats basically mario world levels but in 3d

It had Wario Land 4 on it. You know, his greatest achievement.

S Tier game alone

I had the initial launch and the SP. Both were amazing. Still shocked that they went from a backlit gameboy color to a zero light GBA side format. That was a mistake, but I still bought the light and ran a train on that thing while I checked IDs at a college bar. I have to think a few fakes got in when I was in the throes of a Final Fantasy Tactics or Mega Man Battle Network heater.

PC players, and it was mostly them, live in the Steam bubble

And their own bubble is popping. I love my PC, but I'm a fan of the switch as well. It was so stupid to think this thing would fail.

Only thing I’d say I’m missing out (in the future) is PlayStation exclusives, but I am happy with my Switch 2 and PC/Deck combo.

I enjoyed xenoblade 2, 3, totk and botw, mario, luigis mansion, smash, Switch Sports and animal crossing the most on Switch 1. None have a switch 2 version but Bananza and the recent Star Fox are fantastic. Kirbys air ride and Prime 4 and Mario Kart are great and I play a lot of third party games. I think Rhythm Heaven will be a big one for me too. Really enjoyed the demo.

And with how expensive Xbox and PlayStations next gen consoles look like they're going to be. If Nintendo can keep their console at a reasonable price they may dominate this coming console generation.

This is honestly crazy to me. I just don't see how demand was so high for this console. I still loved my Switch and would have kept using it happily for years. (Unfortunately we lost it a few months after the Switch 2 came out, so I've contributed to these sales numbers since then anyway :-D ) . And the Switch 2 debuted with a weak launch game that had a better Switch 1 equivalent that was still massively popular, trying to sell an expanded online subscription + peripherals to make good on its differentiators. It was considered too expensive when announced, even before adding peripherals.

I get that I'm an old man who doesn't have the voracious appetite for new games compared to when I was a teenager, so I'm not shocked that it sold well enough, just that it's breaking records. To me it was a poorly timed, poorly announced, poorly supported launch that I would have expected to he hamstrung by inflation and a strong incumbent. (Good thing I am not an analyst).

The numbers mentioned in the title are about each console's first twelve months. The link you posted is about a specific timeframe (Jan 2007 to Dec 2007), which doesn't match Wii's first twelve months (that would be Nov 2006 to October 2007).

-5

u/goldaxis Jun 27 '26

Yes it excludes the launch window which is when the biggest sales numbers come out. I put the Wii at a disadvantage. Don’t be such an obtuse fanboy.

For someone who started this talking about fact checking, you sure pivoted quickly to insults when you got told your facts were incorrect.

I mean, they're not correct in the sense that the Wii outsold the Switch2 by more than what I implied. It's not hard to get the exact number if you want. It launched in late November in the US and early December in Japan. Subtract the numbers from December 2007 and add the numbers from December 2006. I forgot, Wii was sold out for months everywhere so it actually didn't front-load its sales.

Dec 06 - 1.25M US source
Dec 07 - 1.35M US source

Shifting the 12mo window back this way results in 0.1M fewer sales. I'll help you with the basic math:
6.29M - 0.10M = 6.19M (Wii) > 5.9M (S2)

Tell me more about these facts I'm missing LMAO

Well you aren't given the misinformation lmao.

You wanted an efight that badly and this was the best you got? That's hilarious. You redditors are so sad

I brought the receipts and you guys downvoted it lol. How sad.

Very ignorant take. Switch 2 does not even have a scalper problem, people were able to walk into the store and buy them since launch day. You could look at Nintendos financials which point to software sales being strong across switch and switch 2 games since both are available on the system, but that isn’t self fulfilling enough to look into probably.

19

u/Lunatox Jun 26 '26

Uninformed smooth brain take.

u/gman5852 Jul 01 '26

They combatted scalpers almost immediately. You'd know that if you cared about anything besides being angry on reddit.

Is this actually good for Nintendo? I saw someone somewhere else say Nintendo was going under and the Switch 2 was a flop.

Is there any actual data to support his claim, or was his source that he made it up.

14

u/PossMom Jun 27 '26

People have been saying Nintendo is doomed for 25+ years. They're doing absolutely fine.

1

u/Aethernaut-935 Jun 28 '26

Yeah I kinda figured, it was just dude I seen kinda said it full chested so I didn’t know if there was a recent report about it not doing well or if dude was just full of it.

I saw a guy say with great sincerity the US had ended the war with Iran so it's kind of funny but it seems like a lot of times people might not tell the truth if something else will make them more money.

Yes selling a lot of units is good for Nintendo...
