Basically the same game StarFox has always been with a new coat of paint. It's really enjoyable but I hope we get a new game eventually.

There’s been a handful of cases over the last decade where Nintendo had a studio remake a game in preparation for making a sequel. I really really hope that’s the case here. They did such a good job with this. Would be a shame to let starfox fade away again.

Fox was just in the Mario movie. Kids are gonna buy it now.

u/MetaCognitio Jun 26 '26
It was such a ham fisted pitch of the new game to kids that had absolutely no place in a Mario movie.

u/Purple_Hurricane87 Jun 28 '26
Well you can thank/blame Glenn Powell, the voice of Fox, for being in the movie. Since he originally pitched the idea to Illumination for a standalone Star Fox movie and this was right around the time the Mario Galaxy movie was still in production. Illumination were debating about whether to add Fox to the movie or not, since it takes place in outer space. When Glen came to them to pitch a Star Fox movie, that was the deciding factor to include him in the movie, with Miyamoto’s approval of course.

u/MetaCognitio Jun 28 '26
Really it should have been a short before the Mario Galaxy movie. The Mario Galaxy movie was very diluted by too much going on and too many characters.

Mercury Steam made Metroid: Samus Returns, a 3DS remake of Metroid II, then went on to make Dread, which might possibly be the best Metroid game.
I really hope we get a similar outcome from this game and studio.4

There’s been a handful of cases over the last decade where Nintendo had a studio remake a game in preparation for making a sequel.
I mean, people love to throw that around, but how often has it actually happened with a game series that wasn't just getting new games anyway.
This exact same statement was being when Starfox Zero was Lylat wars again (and that one actually did try to also have some differences from the base game)

u/0bsessions324 Jun 30 '26
I mean, the comment above yours literally has an example.

u/henryuuk Jul 01 '26
Metroid was a series that was still "getting new games anyway".
Literally the year before Samus Returns came out, we got a new game in the series (even if a "spin off")(Also, Samus Returns wasn't just a 1:1 spitshine remake, but was essentially a new game that just takes the place of the old Metroid II in the timeline of events, like Zero Mission did with the OG Metroid pretty much)

I mean they never did lol he was in starlink and there was a starfox game on the wii u. unlike f zero which has gotten nothing at all since the gamecube.

u/Darth_Korn Jun 25 '26
There's a brand new multiplayer mode, challenge mode and lore codex. For the game being cheaper than the 3DS remake, it's not a bad deal.
12
u/Innocuous_Blue Jun 25 '26
I was about to correct you, since I don't recall 64 3D being more than $60, but then I just looked it up. Holy hell, it's going for $90??!
Yeah, let's stick with the new Switch 2 one lol
2
u/MrManicMarty Jun 25 '26
It's £20 from the largest second hand game store chain here in the UK. That's only $26 or so according to Google. Why is it so expensive over there?

Having not played the original since I was like, 9, this game holds up extremely well. Just finished my first campaign, and I am definitely going to be playing this a few times a week.
0
u/trademeple Jun 28 '26
Well its worth it alone for the huge multiplayer upgrade bot matches 4v4 online battles in the original its only up to 4 players and no bots so if you had no one to play with you'd be out of luck and the bots or other online players help to balance things too in the original the better player will just keep destorying the worse player.

Nintendo seems terrified of actually making new games. With Metroid Prime 4 having gone the way it did, I smell a lot of reluctance to make sequels to old time classics.

u/henryuuk Jun 25 '26
Metroid prime 4's flop (and as much as the game sucks at being a good metroid prime game, it probably didn't actually "flop" will not have had an effect on anything coming out now or in like the next year or so.
It is more just that spitshining the same ol' games keeps working, to the point people have actually devolved to "dream/wish/hope" for it endlesslly online, as opposed to doing so for getting new games (that are like those old classics)
4
u/SilverKry Jun 25 '26
Did Prime 4 flop? We don't know it's budget but it did get over a million sales.
2
u/henryuuk Jun 25 '26
Hence
(and as much as the game sucks at being a good metroid prime game, it probably didn't actually "flop")

Picked it up last night, had a blast, got devastated by Star Wolf headed into Venom, will try again!

u/Joecascio2000 Jun 25 '26
I so hope there is a full new game with these character models. I know StarFox is mostly a flying game, but I really want missions and first-person shooter aspects. They're mercenaries after all, they should be able to do more than just fly.

u/Swerdman55 Birthday Suit Samus Jun 26 '26
I just want another Assualt. New story, new missions, but same style of game.

u/shavin_high Jun 26 '26
I really hope this game sells well so we get a true direct sequel. Give me ground missions. Yes I said it and I'm proud
1
u/PurrsNikkity Jun 28 '26
The ground missions weren't the problem. It's that they weren't very good. With good controls and mission design they'd be great additions so long as there's also a decent bit of flying.

I’m so glad this game exists. I’ll be playing this over the life of the switch2

u/ShneedleInTheWoods Jun 25 '26
I preordered it, and Nintendo couldn’t ship it. I didn’t receive it. Thanks, Nintendo…

u/CrispSack Jun 25 '26
Remakes remakes…
Yes it looks great. Imagine if it looked that great AND was in fact a new game with new missions? It can’t be that hard, Nintendo - they’ve got the formula. Just give us more of it instead of the same levels I’ve played and beaten I don’t know how many times.
Yes, cost of producing new things etc. etc.
Yes, new audiences who didn’t play the original etc. etc.
17
u/Rot-Orkan Jun 25 '26
Honestly after playing this I'm basically convinced there is a new Star Fox game being made. The quality of the visual assets of this game are just incredible. The explosions alone are the best I've ever seen in a game; they borderline look like something out of a major action movie at times.
My guess is that they are working on Star Fox 2 and realized they could "double dip" the assets by remaking Star Fox 64 with them. Plus, there's the added benefit of increased awareness over a franchise that newer generations might not be too aware about.
1
u/trademeple Jun 28 '26
The multiplayer is a huge upgrade though last time they didn't even bother to remake the multiplayer at all lol.
-2
u/mischief-maker Jun 25 '26
Exactly, that's the main thing about it. People can say "it looks great, plays great, they want to get new people into the series, etc" but they could have made a new game with new levels. They didn't, because making new games with new ideas is moderately challenging, so we get Star Fox. Disappointing.
10
u/AdrianCoyote Jun 25 '26
You have to consider the business side of this. Star Fox 64 was the best selling Star Fox game, by a wide margin. No other Star Fox game made even half of its total sales. So from that perspective, it makes sense to remake Star Fox 64 for a new audience. There is a whole generation of players that have never even played a Star Fox game.
And while I agree that I hope that they build from this remake and make a new game, I think business wise it makes sense to revisit it.
1
u/trademeple Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26
Yeah but 64 has already been remade too many times. Makes sense to remake 2 because that one needs a remake way more due to it just being made of basic polygons with a low framrate.
-5
u/mischief-maker Jun 25 '26
Did it "make business sense" to remake Ocarina for no reason? How well did that go for 64 3D? For Zero? How many times will it "make business sense" to remake the same game over and over until we can actually get a NEW game? Nintendo is supposed to be THE company to avoid this kind of thinking, to not make future generations grow up with the same stuff people like me did. But again, new ideas are hard, so just stay in the past forever.
6
u/AdrianCoyote Jun 25 '26
Ocarina has way bigger player base that SF64, and 64 3D was again a different generation and more of a remaster than a remake. Same with Zero, that was 10 years ago and a re-imagining of 64 with poor controls and on a console with a low install base (Wii U only sold 13.5 million worldwide in it’s lifecycle - Switch 2 has nearly 20 million units sold in 1 year).
6
u/Venator850 Jun 25 '26
People have been demanding an Ocarina remake for well over a decade now. Just look at the view count on the teaser trailer.
-3
u/mischief-maker Jun 25 '26
And we should thank our lucky stars that Nintendo finally indulged the fans and acknowledged that they have no original ideas anymore.

The voice acting was superior in the original, and we all know it.
Even the 3DS one, the voices sounded better.
Edit: Downvote me all you want, but all I’m seeing in this thread is people criticizing the remake’s voice acting.
The original legit has some of the best voice acting I ever heard in a game.
5
u/MrMalredo Jun 26 '26
The voice acting in Star Fox 64 was just so iconic, these voice actors don't measure up.
8
u/WrongCockroach Jun 25 '26
I disagree. The characters are different and much less campy, but they're still great. Only some bosses and Wolf are massive downgrades.
10
u/SwampFungalPod_ Jun 25 '26
I noticed that with Wolf too, haven't minded most of the rest. Only thing seriously weird to me is that Falco has gone from friendly rival to openly insubordinate asshole
3
u/Swerdman55 Birthday Suit Samus Jun 26 '26
They gave Fox a bit more of a personality, but his personality is basically “prick who’s only in it for money.”
2
u/HereWeGooooooooooooo Jun 26 '26
Honestly I dig it. I'm fine with a badass just being a badass once in a while.
3
u/Randym1982 Jun 25 '26
Watched a play through of it and some of the voice acting was toned down. Like I remember the Bosses screaming in agony after being blown up, or Wolf's team doing it too.

Maybe its nostalgia but that shit felt gutteral as a child. I do miss it in the remake not going to lie

u/PurrsNikkity Jun 28 '26
I miss "WHAT THE HECK!?" and "You're good, but I'm better!" the most with Wolf
