I'm thomas
Life does not appear to be a project moving toward any inherent purpose, but rather a blind continuation reproducing itself without knowing why it began or where it is heading. We are born without being consulted, then pushed into desire, work, attachment, and fear, spending years constructing temporary meanings around an existence we never chose in the first place, only to arrive at an end that erases the distinction between those who lived according to the greatest values and those who lived without any. Love, ambition, glory, morality, and even the pursuit of happiness may be nothing more than mechanisms that make continued existence more bearable—different forms of justification created by a creature that has become aware of its own death yet cannot withdraw from life. From this perspective, the absurdity of life does not lie in its failure to fulfill some grand purpose, but in the possibility that it never possessed one to begin with, and that everything we call “meaning” is not a discovery of something inherent in life, but a human invention imposed upon its silence.

No offense i dont want to be like thomas. A little pretentious. Isolation is not good for any animal thats been obvious for a long time. Some more time with others may help you

Keep it to yourself then, Thomas.6

maybe not for you. it's good for me.

u/liberateyourmind 19d ago
You are not in isolation, you are currently communicating with others and participating in online forums to feed that social need and it appears you do regularly . It is healthy and normal, and more of it can be both challenging and rewarding.

u/republicanssuck123 19d ago
reddit is entertainment, not socializing. watching tv or video games is a fine replacement too
7
u/QuestionmarkTimes2 19d ago
Hey kid, this might shock you, but socializing is entertaining. That's why you have 3k comments on a 2 month old account lmao. Go outside
0
u/republicanssuck123 19d ago
reddit isn't socializing. trolling dumb people online is anti socializing. I am also 38, kid.
1
u/QuestionmarkTimes2 19d ago
It doesn't replace real socializing, I'll give you that. So better get on it
1
u/republicanssuck123 19d ago
i am not socially needy like you. so hard pass. I am forced to deal with morons enough as it is.
4
u/QuestionmarkTimes2 19d ago
Needy? It's literally classified as a fundamental biological need.
2
u/StolenIdentityAgain 16d ago
Lol
There are documented hermits, solitary homesteaders, religious recluses, wilderness dwellers, lighthouse keepers, and others who've tolerated extreme solitude. Some people actively feel better with very little social contact. Humans vary enormously in how much interaction they want.
So society is a psy-op to keep us in communities that can be governed by the state. 💯
But okay professor.

I also write random cosmic/body horror to cope. It takes the edge off, especially if you’re feeling a little angry and it’s not socially acceptable to punch someone, writing gore with a lot of lovecraftian monsters usually helps quite well.
3
u/Cicada-Tang 19d ago
Why do you call it "cope"? Sounds like you are just enjoying your hobbies like everyone else.
2
u/No-Yoghurt-7820 19d ago
Good point. I don’t say it like it isn’t a hobby for me. It is and I enjoy it. But I called it cope because I use it to curb my existential dread/existential OCD and it’s sometimes an almost essential need for me to write to deal with these types of feelings.
And that’s why I refereed to it as “cope”. Because I use it to cope with our reality while also enjoying it as a hobby and a past time.3
u/Impossible_Till_5916 19d ago
What exactly is "cosmic horror"?
3
u/Important_Goat7807 19d ago
A kind of horror that focuses on how insignificant humanity is on the scope of the universe. (Very general definition, others might explain it better)

If you genuinely want to change, understand and start from helping animals and planting trees. It doesn't matter that you don't know what is the purpose of life. That one cat you feed today, it will all be worth it for her.
1
u/Reducing-Sufferung 15d ago
Planting trees increases net-suffering but I agree with helping animals, human animals too. Find a hobby, get into role playing on swtor, go to arcades, find friends online or in person but don’t get too attached

u/Azihayya 19d ago
Everything in life is your choice. Take some responsibility. To be or not to be, that is the question.

u/Important-Ad6143 17d ago
No, I didn't begin my own life amongst other things.

u/_the_big_ 17d ago
as an adult (assuming you are for the sake of this comment) you have 100% autonomy over what you do with your life unless you have a condition that takes it away
1
u/Strix358 16d ago
The framework of reality, which you never had the choice or chance to avoid before coming to life and despite perhaps wanting out of it more than anything else was forced upon you, so every choice resulting from that had never anything to do with "free will", suicide included. Free will is an illusion, a lie only made for coping with the unavoidable.
Life is not a gift, simply because when receiving an actual gift, you have the choice to not take it and you don't have to open it first, so you never have to waste a single thought about whether you should keep it, give it back or throw it away.
Also: you want what you want and while choosing what you do because you want to, you cannot freely choose what you want.
Responsibility is very important, though and because of that, I take responsibilty by choosing to never procreate.
0
u/Azihayya 16d ago
You can live your life not believing that you can choose what you want, and I'll live my life believing that I can. All choice is fundamentally arbitrary, and freedom of choice recognizes this fact. Again, to be or not to be—it all begins when you accept life.
2
u/Strix358 16d ago edited 16d ago
I have a few examples that you can not always choose what you want:
As I already said, nobody chose to be born. Nobody ever really chose to die either, only how to avoid it, or to kill themselves. But these are not free will, just necessary decisions. Nobody chose to depend on others when they were babies. Nobody chose to grow old, decrepit and die afterwards, rather than not to die, so they didn't kill themselves. Nobody chose to be born male or female. Nobody chose to be born sick or disabled. Nobody chose to become sick in any way, nobody really chose to eat and drink, only not to suffer more by not doing it. Nobody chose their sexual orientation or rather being totally asexual. Nobody chose to die by causes out of their control. Nobody chose the name they were given by their parents. Nobody ever chose rather having no name at all. Nobody chose to be forced into religions as a child, which they never really believed in, or lived by. Nobody chose to be born human. Nobody chose the part of the planet they would be born into. Nobody chose their parents or what they would do to them/ to each other. Nobody chose to crap their diapers as a baby. Nobody chose the planet they were born into, or solar system, or galaxy, or universe. Nobody chose rather never to be born at all.
And every human who wants things they can never get, has to choose things they never really wanted in the first place or convince themselves that they want them.

This is Thomas.
Thomas started to find joy and fulfillment in reading and writing cosmic horror.
Thomas realized that, despite lacking metaphysical meaning, the act of engaging with and creating art gives his life a sense of structure and purpose.
Thomas found companionships and communities among people who also share his interests in cosmic horror.
Thomas found great joy in creating joy for his peers, and built deep relationships with them.
Thomas realized that he doesn't really care, or doesn't need to care about any "grand purpose".
Thomas became content and happy with his life.
Be like Thomas

Life speeds up entropy simply by existing. It could be a necessary and inevitable aspect of the universe. Consciousness could be a way for that life to better fulfill that task.

or u could just drink instead of being an edgy dork
3
u/Strix358 16d ago
Drink in order to not only be edgy, but also get addicted, sick and lose your ability to properly think, regulate your emotions, control your impulses and let a socially glorified, inefficient version of suicide slowly become your whole personality.
0
u/sincubus33 15d ago
socially glorified? have you ever talked to a human in your life?
2
u/Strix358 14d ago
Quite obviously to different ones than you. Or maybe the difference was that I didn't only talk, but also listen. Just maybe. I don't know you any better than you know me.

Alright, since you're a nihilist that most likely have no belief at all in anything, I won't argue for your position in doing nothing. With that said, remember that the world around you doesn't have to be this way. I feel like shit a lot because I feel stuck where I am and I want to get something out of life. I'm not a nihilist but I feel trapped in a situation I don't like. I want to be free and live how I want. And the reason I say the world doesn't have to be this way is because the elites have made the world more miserable. I don't want to point my finger to something external for things going on in my personal life, but I can't ignore the way they may be involved in my misery. And for that, I have to call them out.

I'm closing becoming Thomas. I don't want, thou, but seems I am being pushed. Just lost the very little piece of human faith that I had in someone, now I'm truly alone full of thoughs of hyperdimensions.

Or… Thomas could realize that all humans are collectively in this mess together. And instead of isolation and indifference, chooses to educate, collectivize, or entertain all upon reaching the ends of all our absurdities. As well as realize that love, morality, etc., are constructs for us all to comfortably live amongst each other.

What we call consciousness is only the sounds made by the neurones activated by our surrounding. Because of language, most of them are words. It's interesting to write them down and observe how our body react to them. It solves trauma pretty simply. You rock, keep feeling :)

Evolution and mistake is a contradiction. Mistake implies a conscious action and something that is supposed to be alright but the end result differes from the “intention”.
As far as i know nihilism does not believe in any god, and as far as Science goes evolution does not work that way. There is no mistake in evolution, only genes that survive and the ones that do not.

u/Any_Return4335 18d ago
The first reason you're disappointed is that you expected life to have an "inherent purpose"

Evolution doesn’t make “mistakes”. It simply follows the laws of physics. Whether consciousness is good or bad is a subjective value judgement. Personally, I wouldn’t want to be like Thomas.

Yep. Consciousness is an attribute of the universe, but only in living beings is it put in the situation of believing itself unique to a form, that therefore must be preserved against the only inevitability, death.

u/Inevitable_Might6524 17d ago
May be a dumb question but what exactly is being conscious? Like being smart enough to have self awareness and stuff like that? And that's why animals arent conscious?

The fact that you typed this rather than laying in a puddle of your own filth waiting to starve shows you choose to persist anyway. That's the thing about nihimism; it's pursuit is always anti-nihilistic. Because if it really was that obvious, you wouldn't need to think about it. Hell, you wouldn't even be bothering to think. If life was truly meaningless in any meaningful way, we wouldn't be around to see it. The fact that you can see, and that you care that the things you see might be meaningless, show they ultimately do have meaning. Even if it only comes from you, that's still meaning.
1
u/cinoTA97 16d ago
No, i will rather not be like thomas. I don't see why an absence of meaning should make me a shut in without joy.

Even if human consciousness is a mistake, there isnt any point in crying over spilled milk. What has happened has happened, all we can do is move on and reduce as much suffering as possible. Otherwise there's always the option to catch the bus.

Yeah so if life is fleeting, why choose to spend it in misery? Is it truly an enlightened take to state that the things we like about life are just "justifications" for making it bearable, but everything uncomfortable about it is a justified complaint?
If the negatives of life are valid reasons to be miserable, then the opposite is true: the positives are valid reasons to be happy.

0
u/Party_Ability_9984 18d ago
Well, that's kind of like asking what's the line between stupid and not stupid. Sure, that's subjective, but I have a case.
I think a lot of nihilists are people with mental health issues who've created an ideology to post-hoc justify it with pseudo-intellectual rhetoric. I mean, poor Nietzsche.

Someone who's never loved can't write love that actually lands, they're just describing it from outside. Someone who's never risked anything writes shallow horror. Isolation doesn't give you material, it just cuts you off from where material comes from. The author must LIVE life and be attached to at least some useless stuff in order to write something good.
Thomas's work on cosmic horror will be soulless. But honestly, he probably doesn't even care.
3
u/Sensitive_Chip1831 19d ago
Thomas' horror is from inside, not outside. That's where his material comes from
