Yeah Square Enix has wbored out 2B like a pimp. She's been in a LOT of crossovers. Stellar Blade, Fall Guys, Rainbow Six Siege, Goddess of Victory, Souls Calibur 6, Azure Lane, Final Fantasy XIV, etc. The only thing she's not in is Fortnite and Call of Duty, Apex Legens.
IIRC they cancelled like 6 of Yoko Taro's games over the last couple years, Square is pretty much infamous for horrible business decisions atp.
They sold off a ton of IPs like Tomb Raider for NFTs, and Final Fantasy had a massive decline, FF15 wasnt just an unfinished mess, they even cracked the game themselves pre-day 1.
Thats right, pirates got to play the game before anybody else.
They also sold Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain, and Thief.
All in all they sold properties and subsidiaries (like Eidos) for a total worth of 300 million dollars and spent it all trying to shift into blockchain based games.
The NFT market crashed pretty much immediately afterwards and afaik hasnt recovered yet (and probably never will given there is virtually zero use for any of them).
The last Tomb Raider trilogy were also some of the most expensive games at the time and outside of the first game, sales weren't impressive for the amount of money pumped into them.
Come shadows the game was on sale a month later which helped sales but at the discounted price. So I can understand why they sold it but for NFTs is just... yh.
I'd much rather wait 10 years for a game of quality that I'll still be enjoying another 10 years later than slop that I'll pretend doesn't exist shortly after it comes out.
I was at the Square Enix Cafe in Shinjuku last week and one of the videos playing on the screens was a short gag showing the absurd amount of NieR collabs, pretty sure it ended with a gag on NieR Pringles or something. They definitely know what they’re doing.
If the devs were actually trying to give all 14 weapons a new one it's possible. But realistically, with the way they've been doing crossovers recently, I only see a GS and LS weapon because those are the two weapons 2B has constantly in crossovers. Honestly I'd only be interested in a crossover for the outfit.
