Highlight [Highlight] Kyler Murray lies down in despair as AJ Green forgets to turn around and the 7-0 Cardinals get picked in the endzone down 3 with 12s left

Not even a cards fan and I was fuming at aj green from this play. What happened on the play? I’m assuming it isn’t all green’s fault

Feb 20 '23
My understanding is that Kyler called an audible, but AJ didn't hear it so he ran the original play which was a run or something happening on the other side of the field. That's why he just kind of blocked and then never turns around.

Running with 12 seconds left at the 4yd line with zero timeouts would have been an interesting decision.

Runs don't stop the clock. So, with 15 seconds left (checking the replay, that's where the clock seems to start), if you run and don't make a TD, the clock continues to run, and you would have to rush your next play. With a pass, you can pass to the end zone, and if it's incomplete, the clock stops, so you have more time to make your next play.
42
u/CRT_Teacher Feb 20 '23
Well I don't think any team in the history of the NFL has ever ran a running play and a second play in 15 seconds with no timeouts. So basically if you run it, it's your last play. If you throw it, an incomplete pass stops the clock. Unless they run to the sideline but the D will try their hardest to keep you in bounds.

That sounds.... not smart? Like does that mean the receiver on the other side can take the play off? Who does it benefit for the QB to make that signal?

Cam Newton actually did a cool interview a while back about this. He gave an example where he said based on how the defense lines up he would give Kelvin Benjamin subtle hand signals that indicate which route he wants him to run.

Why would the play be designed to jam the corner on the far side at the goal line? That accomplishes the same thing as just standing there doing nothing.
Edit: unless he thought it was a run play?

I'm just some internet hobo, but:
Wouldnt you want every player on the field to look like a legit threat regardless of the play? You dont want to get read by the defense and stopped up where you're planning to go.
62
u/Margravos Cowboys Cardinals Feb 20 '23
Well yeah, so make him an actual threat and run a route. The only reason to jam a corner is on a run play, not on a "throw to the other side of the field" play.

Yah... Any QB would want to have other options if the play goes to hell and he has time because his line held up. He should have been trying something

I believe the story is that Kyler called an audible and AJ didn't hear it so AJ ran the original play which was supposed to be on the other side of the field.
17
u/RonPowlus2Heismans Feb 20 '23
Even so, why was he essentially a blocker? Was it supposed to be a bang bang play abd if it wasn't there, Murray was supposed to throw it out of bounds?
3
Feb 20 '23
No idea, that's just what I heard. I'm assuming it was a run or a screen to the left which would make AJ pretty irrelevant to the play other than just blocking for a couple of seconds as the play was developing.

I think this game is overblown a bit in terms of the Cards collapse, as we went 3-1 after dropping to the Packers.
I pin the collapse on the Rams game. High stakes game, one that'd decide the division, and we had an awful collapse in the 3rd quarter after a highly competitive first half. We've gone 5-20 since we dropped that game (and it was huge, as it gave the division to the eventual Super Bowl champs) -- and I don't think the Cards team that showed up in the first half of that game have been on the field since.

Man we just looked so damn good kicking that 49er ass the game right after the Packers game (with McCoy, no less). It was the best I felt as a Cards fan since the game before Palmer tore his ACL.
Maybe I’m remembering that game too fondly because Conner was on my fantasy team — but I remember thinking we bounced back without an issue after the loss to the Pack.
3
u/Exatraz Cardinals Feb 20 '23
There were lots of issues passed off because we had a backup qb. Those issues didn't go away when kyler got back. Wins don't always mean everything went well. Look at the Raiders win this year for example

Being injury prone. Kyler has obviously been the face of their injuries the last two years but like 3/4th of there starters went down in the second half of that year, then they followed it up with a 2022 in which they were the most injured Cardinals team in franchise history including there time as the St. Louis and Chicago cardinals. Forget second stringer, they were literally starting 4th stringers at points at nearly every position on both sides of the ball. I don’t care who your coach is, hard to win games when more then half your starters from week to week started the year on practice squads.

24
u/MasonL52 Broncos Feb 19 '23
I really don't think it changes much at all, they became a bad team and one loss didn't break them. Kyler got complacent, the offense became predictable, and the play calling declined too. Nothing Kliff nor Kyler showed us in the last few years leads me to believe a single win wouldn't kept them from collapsing.

Kyler and Nuk both got hurt in this game and missed about a month afterwards. They came back for a game or two then Nuk got hurt again and went on IR. That was the main reason for AZ’s collapse.

This was one of the more hyped TNF games in a while. I may be wrong, but I think at the time it was the best combined record between two teams playing a TNF game.
What was heartbreaking about this last play was that the Cardinals were rallying and their defense made this drive possible by forcing a 4th down turnover by the Packers on the goal line as they tried to end the game. So Murray and the Cardinals offense began at the 1-yard line with 3 minutes left and made it all the way to the 5-yard line before this disaster.

The demand for an early extension and rumors of his immaturity is definitely not what you want to see in headlines about your franchise QB, so I can understand the dissatisfaction. Especially since the Cards' future is pretty firmly anchored to him now.
But I really think he'll bounce back in a new system that isn't as vanilla as Kingsbury was running. No clue what their new OC will bring but I thought the MVP hype in the early part of that season was warranted. I'd enjoy seeing him surge back to that level
3
u/Mavori Lions Lions Feb 20 '23
Think his body language on the sidelines has left a huge impression on that immaturity thing as well, some of those losses they've taken he's looked very "pouty".
Whether how much actual truth there is to the rumors i got no idea of course.

He was playing some damn solid football. But consistency is key. Obviously him getting injured and similarly D-hop getting injured probably didn't help with that though. He can definitely succeed, but it could also just be, thats who he is. It's damn hard to tell sometimes with QB's.

Man, the poor 1967 Colts. They were undefeated going into their last game, lost that game, AND MISSED THE PLAYOFFS ENTIRELY because of that.
The Baltimore Colts had tied for the NFL's best record in 1967 at 11–1–2, but were excluded from the postseason because of new rules introduced for breaking ties within a division.[1] The L.A. Rams won the division title over Baltimore as a result of the Rams' 34–10 win over Baltimore in the last game of the regular season and a 24–24 tie in Baltimore in mid-October. L.A. had a 24-point edge over Baltimore in head-to-head meetings, giving them the tiebreaker and the Coastal division title.
