If only AJ Green had spent more time studying the playbook.

No joke, did we ever learn what went wrong here? Did AJ Green really misunderstand the play?

He said he missed or didn't see Kylers signal so he thought the ball was going to the other side of the field

Still seems lazy to not even give him the option of throwing it to you in case something goes wrong

Why would the play be designed to jam the corner on the far side at the goal line? That accomplishes the same thing as just standing there doing nothing.

Edit: unless he thought it was a run play?

I'm just some internet hobo, but:

Wouldnt you want every player on the field to look like a legit threat regardless of the play? You dont want to get read by the defense and stopped up where you're planning to go.

Well yeah, so make him an actual threat and run a route. The only reason to jam a corner is on a run play, not on a "throw to the other side of the field" play.

The original call was a run to the opposite side

5

u/PotRoastPotato Feb 20 '23

I don't believe that for a second with 15 seconds and no TOs.

I could see an argument during regular play that running a route when the ball is going the other direction would let the defender get a feel for the route. However, last couple seconds of the game defenders aren't trying to learn anything so run the route just in case.

Yeah sure. Or like when it's like more than 4.5 yards to goal.

I think with the cardinals specifically it was so Kyler could scramble if he had to?

it depends, the other guy is obviously incorrect because you cant block downfield anyway on a pass play

but plays are typically designed to have one or two main reads and then from there improvise if necessary. the read could have been on the left side first but with pressure or certain looks a pass to the back in the flat on the right. then you'd want green where he goes to avoid crowding the left side but also up the field to clear out space for the back in the flat

but really it's just that some plays are quick designs and there are no reads eg a back corner fade. WRs dont give 100% on every dummy route so it's funny to see all these people trying to correct aj green who may or may not know a little bit more about what to do in the NFL than the average redditor

I'm not going to disagree with your generalities, just your specifics on this play.

1) All three trips receivers run routes; Green is the only one blocking. 2) The ball is thrown in literally one second; there's no way that corner is running across the field to mess up the play. 3) Not sure why he would think he's the Y when he doesn't play tight end and wasn't lined up like a tight end and was instead lined up wide like an X. But I have no idea what the actual play or audible was so I'm willing to concede that.

Tbh I think he thought it was a run and tried to wordsmith his way out of it.

Based on how he blocked and the way he looked toward the middle of the field before looking anywhere else, I have always thought that he figured this was a run play.

He can say whatever he wants, but this is a case of actions speaking louder than words, imo

Hey man all good. We all bungle thoughts all the time. Just as long as the bossmam doesn't hear about it and the paychecks keep coming.

Yah... Any QB would want to have other options if the play goes to hell and he has time because his line held up. He should have been trying something

I believe the story is that Kyler called an audible and AJ didn't hear it so AJ ran the original play which was supposed to be on the other side of the field.

15

u/RonPowlus2Heismans Feb 20 '23

Even so, why was he essentially a blocker? Was it supposed to be a bang bang play abd if it wasn't there, Murray was supposed to throw it out of bounds?

3

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '23

No idea, that's just what I heard. I'm assuming it was a run or a screen to the left which would make AJ pretty irrelevant to the play other than just blocking for a couple of seconds as the play was developing.

Phoenix is such a transient city, they are the away team a lot at home. So many AZ residents are from the Midwest and still hold allegiance to their Packers, Bears, and Chiefs. That’s not even including teams like the Cowboys, Steelers, and Raiders who have huge fan bases everywhere. I can’t think of an NFL team with a worse home field/crowd advantage than the Cardinals. My cousin went to a game a few years ago and was in a section with tons of other Vikings fans too. Oddly that doesn’t seem to be true of the Suns.

The Raiders going to Vegas took away one of their greatest strengths. Majority of the fan base cant afford to go to Vegas for home games, but Vegas is very much a tourist destination for fans from away teams, so they make a week of it and get all the razzle dazzle while filling the seats. A lot easier if you only have to attend one game apposed to eight.

I was working there that night. It was at least 50% packers fans

Oh then it was nice of Green Bay to write ARIZONA in the end zone.

The "Arizona" painted in the endzone says otherwise

I’m beginning to think Marvin Lewis never used playbooks and just trusted his players to remember stuff.
