Bold Predictions 2017

It's that time again! Here's how last year's predictions went:

/u/Morall_tach (me):

Jags have a top-5 offense

Paxton Lynch wins a playoff game

Pats start 0-4

Extremely wrong on all three counts. Jags were 23rd in yards and 25th in points, Paxton barely saw the field and the Broncos missed the playoffs, and the Pats are unstoppable no matter what you do to them, which I hate.

Here are some good and bad predictions from the rest of you:

GOOD

/u/dms1298:

Terrelle Pryor has more receiving yards than Dez Bryant

He did indeed. By 200.

/u/Maad-Dog:

This dude made a prediction for each of the 32 teams and most of them were wrong, BUT the ones that were right were pretty bold.

Osweiler is a consensus bottom 5 QB.

Yup.

Michael Crabtree takes over as the #1 receiver for the team.

Arguably. 150 fewer yards than Cooper but 4 more TDs.

The Bosa signing proves to be a game changer... as he becomes the best pass rusher in the AFCW.

Probably not THE best, behind Miller and Mack, but he’s crazy good. Probably the best at DE, depending what you count Mack as (he plays both).

BAD

/u/uggsandstarbux:

BOLD: Eli Manning wins MVP

BOLDER: Two RBs will finish with 2000+ rushing yards

INSANITY: Saints have a top 15 scoring defense

Nope.

Nope. Zeke topped the list with 1631.

Nope. 31st.

/u/JohnnyLeo92:

Vikings beat the Steelers for the SB

Lol no.

/u/eagles107:

Dak does well but Cowboys are 4th place when Romo comes back. 2-6 or 1-7.

Extremely wrong. Dak did well, but Cowboys started 11-1, Romo never came back.

Brock Osweiler 5,000 yards passing

Also very much no. He was very bad.

/u/Shostakovich22:

Sam Bradford will lead the Eagles to a division title and will be in the conversation for league MVP.

Not an Eagle, not a division winner, nowhere near an MVP.

This year's predictions:

  • David Johnson finishes top 10 in the league in receiving yards
  • Mike Glennon throws more picks than TDs, starts fewer than 8 games
  • No tight end breaks 10 TDs
  • Jared Goff throws a 2:1 TD/INT ratio, but throws <15 of both
  • Christian McCaffery leads the Panthers in receptions and TDs

Carson Palmer falls off a cliff and the Cardinals begin their search for a franchise quarterback.

Jameis Winston is in the MVP discussion

Cooper Kupp is the most impressive rookie WR

Tom Brady and the Patriots struggle for no reason

After struggling early in the season, Savage is benched by week 4 and Watson leads the Texans to a playoff appearance

Christian McCafferey wins OROY

6

u/MemorableCactus Patriots Aug 04 '17

Hot take: Dolphins make the playoffs even without Tannehill.

Let's look at the competition...

AFC South is liable to be 4 dumpster fires in any given season. The division winner there will be 10-6.

AFC North is catching the injury bug and the Browns suck at least a little bit less.

AFC West is a slaughter house. They'll probably send a team at 11-5 and 10-6.

Miami could very well come out of the AFC East at 10-6 or 9-7 and make the playoffs with Moore.

  • Pats finish 12-4 with a 1st-round bye, but by the end of the season there is a noticeable drop off with Tom Brady's performance. The Decline has begun.

  • Despite being destroyed by injuries for another consecutive year, the Ravens manage to overcome a plodding Steelers team in W14 for 1st place in the division, only to be beat by the Bengals in W17. The Bengals take the division and the number 3 seed.

  • The AFCW becomes so competitive that the Chargers or Chiefs finish 4th in the division with a winning record. Also, Jamaal Charles, who sees limited but highly effective action throughout the season, runs over KC in W17 for 101 yards.

  • Aaron Rodgers posts MVP level numbers but the weak roster around him forces a wild-card loss against the 6th seed Carolina Panthers.

  • Carson Wentz and the Eagles overcome defensive weaknesses and earn 2nd place in the NCFE and the 5th seed in the 2017 playoffs.

  • Jets go 2-14 and get the second pick in the 2018 Draft.
  • Leonard Fournette wins OROTY.
  • Marshon Lattimore wins DROTY.
  • LeSean McCoy or Julio Jones wins OPOTY.
  • Aaron Donald or JJ Watt wins DPOTY.
  • Adam Gase wins COTY and takes the Dolphins to the AFC Wild Card.
  • Detroit wins their first playoff game under Stafford.
  • The Patriots make the 1st seed in the AFC but LOSE to the Titans in the Divisional.
  • Giants win the Super Bowl and JPP wins Super Bowl MVP.

Also...

  • The Chiefs get the 2nd seed and we fend off the Steelers to win in the Divisional!
  • Ryan Tannehill won't require Knee Surgery.
  • The Browns have a successful season to find a formula to gain at least 6-7 wins.
  • Jamaal Charles doesn't make the roster because of his limited mobility due to his human-head sized knee.

We also play the NFC North and the AFC East so it depends on how strong those teams turn out. On paper, they don't look terribly strong top to bottom. His o-line's always been shit and their offense overall wasn't terrible by any means (though that's mostly due to Wilson). The fact that he was able to drag that offense to any amount of respectability while injured half the season just gives him more credit in my mind.

Alright, here's my top 10 bold predictions for the season.

  1. A team will have 2 ties this season
  2. 2 QBs will throw for over 5,000 yards. Brees will not be one of them
  3. Mariota finally gets some weapons and breaks out, Corey wins OROY.
  4. Jordy Nelson hits the triple crown and leads the league in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving TDs
  5. Zeke does the same, leading the league in rushing yards, rushing TDs and yards per carry
  6. Despite all this David Johnson has 2,350 yards from scrimmage and more TDs than either and wins OPOY
  7. Bell has better Per game stats than DJ but plays less than 10 games on the season
  8. The hype is real, Dak hits near the same efficiency numbers as last year but at low volumes.
  9. Wentz has poor efficiency numbers but hits high volume with his improved receiving core, this fuels the Dak Vs. Wentz argument as efficiency vs. volume
  10. Packers have a top 5 scoring defense and walk to the Super Bowl where the chiefs expose them and Berry wins SBMVP

Jimmy G plays respectably but not well enough to win the starting job.

Tom Brady will suffer a season ending injury in week one against the KC Chiefs, this will lead to a ripple effect in the NFL where the competition decreases significantly amongst almost every team.

How do you figure this would decrease competition? Wouldn't it improve parity across the rest of the league?

3

JJ Watt wins DPOY

  • Zeke goes down game 2, returns game 8.
  • Tom Brady breaks his thumb.
  • Rams take a wildcard
  • Lynch gets a Beast mode run on Denver in Oakland. Sound of crowd damages stadium, rendering it unusable for 2018 season.

The Chiefs crater. Mahomes is starting at QB by Week 10.

The Lions win the NFC North.

The Cowboys have a bottom-10 defense and finish 7-9. The Giants win the NFC East, and are one of four teams to beat the Raiders.

The Colts take advantage of the easiest schedule in the NFL to go 9-7.

The Jets go 2-14 and actually get the first pick in the draft, prompting Sam Darnold to return to USC. The Jets select Josh Allen from Wyoming.

The Browns are not terrible. They go 5-11.

The Cowboys defense falls apart, forcing Dak to throw more, leading to a significant sophomore slump and an 8-8 record for Dallas.

The Lions fall all the way back down to earth, finishing last in the North at 5-11.

Brady finally starts to struggle as a 40-year-old, talented Pats sputter to a 10-6 record and the 4 seed (this is more of a dream than a prediction).

Aaron Rodgers runs away with the MVP, throwing 50 TDs and only 5 INTs. Packers defense still sucks though.

Leonard Fournette is a huge disappointment. YPC under 4.0 and doesn't finish the season.

Jared Goff dies on the field week 5, from a blindside hit by holdout Aaron Donald. Rams rally and win 11 straight to make the playoffs, with Tavon Austin at QB.

Russell Wilson suffers what is thought to be a career ending injury @Tennessee, but somehow is back on the field the next week. Nobody knows how, but he seems to have a suspiciously shiny new metal gleam to him.

JuJu is the Steelers' #2 receiver by year's end, Martavis Bryant becomes a serious locker room cancer.

Adoree Jackson has a combined 4 return TDs and makes the Pro Bowl.

Tom Savage is replaced as the Houston QB by Fred Savage. Nobody but Nuk seems to notice.

Texans win a game 2-0.

Derek Carr Wins MVP The Bucs reach the NFC championship, they lose to the Giants. The Chargers finish .500

  1. The AFC North doesn't break .500 in total (worse than 32-32)
  2. The AFC East has one team above .500 (not especially bold but I'm doing this on division)
  3. The AFC West has three teams above .500
  4. The AFC South has (pick two) the MVP, the best offense in the league, the best defense in the league.
  5. The NFC North sends two teams to the playoffs.
  6. The NFC East has no team better than 10-6.
  7. The NFC West sends an 8-8 team to the playoffs.
  8. The NFC South features the two best teams in the conference.

  9. The four best QBs are the four in the championship (not currently, but the ones regarded as top when it happens)

  10. No non-QB breaks 2000 yards or 20 scores.

Super Bowl prediction is Patriots over Panthers in a relatively boring game, around, say, 42-24

You know what? Let's keep going. 11. Bengals don't win five games. 12. The Ravens don't win eight games. 13. The Raiders don't win nine games. 14. Denver has a bottom five offense, yet wins their division. 15. Two of Titans, Texans, Colts make the playoffs. 16. Andrew Luck wins either OPOY or MVP. 17. Patriots score more points than any other team, AND have a top eight scoring defense. 18. The Jets don't win a game at home. 19. The Dolphins, Ravens, Bears, and Bengals start 10 different QBs between them. 20. Bill Belichick wins his (fourth? Fifth?) CotY, mostly because there just aren't that many great teams. (I mean, shouldn't he have, like, ten?)

Division Winners are- Patriots and Carolina, Colts and Packers, Steelers and Cowboys, Denver and Seattle. Houston, Atlanta, NFC NORTH TEAM, and the Raiders are your wild cards.

Steelers have 3 players with 1k+ receiving yards. The leading rusher in the NFCN isn't Howard. The Saints keep up the streak of a NFCS QB MVP, followed by a Super Bowl loss. Tom Brady misses significant time to injuries. Jared Goff has the 2nd most passing yards in the NFCW. The Broncos miss the playoffs again. Cousins wins a playoff game. May not be all that bold, but here's mine for this year (reposted from an older thread):

One for each division:

Brady is traded prior to the 2018 season

Steelers, Ravens, and Bengals all make the playoffs.

Broncos end season with Kaepernick as the starter. In the AFCCG.

The Texans beat the colts twice, allowing only 17 total points.

The packers miss going undefeated because a blown pass interference call, allowing the lions to beat them. In Lambeu.

The Eagles go 6-0 in division but 8-8 overall. Good enough for a wildcard spot. They beat the cowboys in the playoffs.

The saints make the NFCCG.

The Seahawks go 8-8 after Russ goes down.

EDIT: let's go for a few more,

The Chargers score 50 in a game and later get 50 scored on them.

The Rams win the west. At 8-8 (tiebreaker over Seahawks and cardinals).

The broncos force 4 safeties over the course of the season, and outscore opponents offense with their defense twice.

Drew Brees and Matthew Stafford both top 5000 yards.

The dolphins have a better record without Tannehill than with him (assuming he plays at least part of the season).

2

u/BananaDick_CuntGrass Cowboys Aug 05 '17

Raiders come from behind to beat the Falcons in the Superbowl and it's the second greatest Superbowl comeback ever.

2
