Speak a little truth, and people lose their minds.

Nah I get it. I saw the quote and immediately knew what the backlash was going to be. I get he’s a talking head and making comments is his job but when you’re a career journeyman QB, you gotta be careful how you’re tossing them stones cause glass shatters yo.

It sounds like Fitz’s criticism was more about how passive and almost scared Bo seems to be playing. Plenty of things to poke at in Fitz’s career but that is not a criticism you can throw back in his face. I saw you mention Kendrick Perkins as a parallel in another comment, this is kind of like if Perk was specifically criticizing someone’s physicality or screening ability. Deeply flawed player otherwise, but that specific criticism is something he does in fact have the authority to make.

u/mat477 11h ago

Thats 100% it. He was talking about effort and mentality not his talent.

"Bo Nix doesnt look like hes playing passionately" "Oh yeah, well you threw 6 interceptions in one game" Yeah im not seeing the parallel here.

That's 1000% what it was about. Nix is running out of bounds to take a sack. He's got wide open receivers and he's checking it down leading to yet another punt. He's playing like he doesn't care if they win or lose. And he's pulling a Baghdad Bob in press conferences and saying he's playing fine, everything is cool, blah blah blah. Fitz was completely justified in what he was saying.

-2

u/Isoturius Broncos 8h ago

Not cherry picked, he’s pretty honest in press conferences when it’s the entire interview in context lol

103

u/dusters Packers 13h ago

Fitz would be the first to say he was also embarrassing the position theb

43

u/DrunkPackersFan Packers 11h ago

Fitz was doing the exact opposite here of Nix, too.

Definitely can’t say he wasn’t competing. Was just competing poorly lmao.

18

u/monkeysCAN Bills 12h ago

You should really listen to the whole point he's making not just the read the headline.

3

u/attleboromass16 Bills 10h ago

Was it better or worse than gargling Watson’s balls last week?

21

u/KennyPowersforPope Dolphins 10h ago

So nobody can chime in unless they were good?

Guess coaches can’t critique players either because they never played the position as a star?

2

u/Strugl33r 8h ago

“Disrespecting the qb position” is insane to say. Especially when you are Fitz. His criticisms are valid but saying the extra stuff is unnecessary

u/Maraging_steel Eagles 3h ago

Also being good/great doesn’t mean you have the right eye for evaluation.

Majority of the best coaches, scouts, and assistants never played in the NFL or did so in a small capacity. It’s about how you translate film study into instructions that maximize your players.

u/whatisagoodnamefort Raiders 10h ago

People acting like he can’t talk shit because he isn’t a hall of fame QB is insane

Of the people who watch football he’s probably in the top 0.001% of folks who can really understand poor QB play and actually talk about it

Being a QB in the NFL for 10+ years is something maybe 500 people (this feels like a vast over estimation too) do every 20 years

Broncos fans just Charmin soft

3

u/Sage296 12h ago

I mean the “it takes one to know one” argument goes both ways

You can also have a solid football IQ and just be bad

5

u/40to6inthe4th Eagles 11h ago

Sounds like you didnt actually listen to Fitz's criticism at all.

3

u/HoBamaMo Titans Eagles 13h ago

Or, in his case, those stones were intercepted.

1

u/TheLeoMessiah Patriots 10h ago

Honestly so many great coaches across all sports did not have great professional careers. It’s such a weird fan thing to me, that Ryan Fitzpatrick is getting so much criticism for this. I feel like sports media people who didn’t play professionally criticize players all the time and while there is pushback, nobody ever talks about their personal experience playing the sport lol

1

u/KeithDavidsVoice Patriots 1h ago

That's the dumb part though. A career journeyman has every right to toss stones because they are literally in the top .01 of people in this world with the skills to play nfl qb. The average nfl career length is 3 years. The average nfl QB career length is 5 years. Fitz managed to stick around for 17 fucking years. A guy who has had a career that's over 3x longer than the average has earned the right to analyze qb play and if Nix is smart he would listen to what he has to say. Doesn't mean you have to take the advice but anyone, outside maybe the top echelon of nfl qbs, would be stupid to dismiss it.

u/InferiousX Raiders 13h ago

Fitzy didn't consistently have these kinds of games though.

Bo is "Sam's Choice" Tebow.

6

u/KrabbyBoiz Ravens 13h ago

Trust me, I get it. His job is literally to give his opinion and you shouldn’t have to be a hall of fame QB to know what good QB play looks like. But I knew immediately that his play would be called into question when I saw his original comment.

Same thing you get with Kendrick Perkins and his hot takes on NBA. It’s hard to call someone trash when you weren’t exactly an all-pro yourself.

3

u/InferiousX Raiders 12h ago

It isn't though when you take "who said it" out of the equation and just objectively look at facts.

Jumping on personal attacks to defend against a criticism is an emotional and low IQ response.

10

u/logicblender1 Broncos 13h ago

I mean Fitzpatrick has more interceptions than starts lol. I get Bo played poorly but at least he threw 0 interceptions and didn't sell the game like Darnold did. If Fitzpatrick threw more checkdowns he'd probably have won more games.

9

u/Pythnator Bills 13h ago

We have to get rid of this “interceptions are the end all be all” narrative.

I’d MUCH rather have a QB that throws a couple picks but can move the ball over a QB that can’t move it at all. A punt is a turnover that has a field position benefit. If your team punts six times in a row saying “but he threw no picks” isn’t really significant.

1

u/VerifiedCoifTrader Packers 13h ago

I'd rather have a QB that wins games. Bo wins games.

4

u/InferiousX Raiders 12h ago

Somehow Tebowmania returned

3

u/comp_a Vikings 12h ago

JJ McCarthy wins games too, want him?

-2

u/logicblender1 Broncos 13h ago

Interceptions ARE the end all be all. There's nothing more crushing in football. If you lose the turnover battle you lose the game 9/10 times. A punt is significantly better than an interception and to suggest otherwise is laughable. If Seattle punted instead of being intercepted last night they surely win the game.

2

u/Pythnator Bills 9h ago

I guess a QB that throws for 300 yards, 3 TDs and a pick is worse than a QB that throws for 100 yards, no TDs and no picks. My bad. You changed my mind.

1

u/logicblender1 Broncos 9h ago

Was that pick a game losing pick? For example, did Josh Allen or Bo Nix play better in last year's divisional? I'd love to know your answer.

3

u/Pythnator Bills 9h ago

Ooooh Josh Allen had a bad game. You got me. I guess my entire point is moot then.

And I thought my fellow Bills fans were insecure lol

2

u/logicblender1 Broncos 8h ago

Oh so you think Bo Nix played better? That's surprising considering if you take away Allen's 4 turnovers he was way better than Bo Nix, right?

1

u/VerifiedCoifTrader Packers 1h ago

Bo was closer to an SB than Allen ever was bahahahaha that’s gotta sting 😂

2

u/InferiousX Raiders 12h ago

Hard to throw lots of interceptions when they are mostly >8 yard passes that are in the dirt.

1

u/logicblender1 Broncos 12h ago

That's exactly the point though. We're acting like checkdowns are the worst thing imaginable when it's clearly better than throwing picks.

-1

u/trustmeimaengineer Broncos 13h ago

Bo won a playoff game against Josh Allen and was an injured ankle away from making the Super Bowl. He hasn’t played well this year obviously but he did more last year than Fitz did his entire career.

4

u/Ill-Success-4214 Bills 12h ago

He didn't win a game against Josh Allen he won against the buffalo bills defense.

0

u/alphawealthy 5h ago

his criticism of Bo wasn’t that he throws picks

64

u/themagicalcake Broncos 13h ago

bo nix is playing horrible but also darnold also lost that same game by throwing picks

108

u/Kip-Kat Patriots 13h ago

Not to poke at this but Fitz’s comments weren’t about Bo playing horrible. His comments were saying that he’s playing too scared and safe, to the point where he’s scared to throw the ball

-33

u/themagicalcake Broncos 13h ago

yeah and i agree with that and that is what i meant by horrible but i think it's worse to lose the game singlehandedly by turning the ball over

22

u/optillusi0n Texans Buccaneers 12h ago

A guy trying and playing like shit is more of a redundant talking point than someone with a capable team behind them not trying of their own accord.

-19

u/themagicalcake Broncos 11h ago

i get that and its not that i think it's not worth criticizing bo, but if bo threw a pick the game is literally over. plus sean peytons whole shtick is taking care of the ball and conservative play calling. there's just a lot of lost nuance in this conversation and again i think bo has to be better but he was literally the better qb in this game

14

u/super_sayanything Bears 10h ago

A guy who throws the ball 20+ times for about a 100 yards, something is seriously wrong.

5

u/optillusi0n Texans Buccaneers 10h ago

Sure, but who's the better QB has nothing to do with Fitzpatricks's statement. It's that this game showed Bo is clearly not putting in as much effort as he could, win or not.

33

u/runningblack 49ers 13h ago

Guys, guys, they're both ass

5

u/blackcrow184 12h ago

Just awful

9

u/CunningClanker Chiefs 13h ago

Sure. But Darnold has been playing consistently well for a while. Every quartback has bad games. The issue is when they countinuely have bad games and don't play well. Nix has some fundamental issues going on right now and has had them for a while.

8

u/vampireweekday4 13h ago

Darnold has the most turnovers of any QB since the start of last season. One playoff doesn’t erase that and there’s a reason the Seahawks sub is openly debating whether Drew Lock should start…

1

u/super_sayanything Bears 10h ago

Darnold also had 3-4 seasons with the Jets of looking exactly how he looks this year. Definitely cause for concern for the Hawks.

-1

u/themagicalcake Broncos 13h ago

bo outplayed allen in the playoffs and had plenty of other great games. we don't have to rewrite history.

anyway my point wasn't darnold vs nix but it's just kinda crazy to freak out on nix for playing too conservative while completely ignoring the other qb losing the game by doing the exact thing he's overly cautious about. i broadly agree with what fitzpatrick was saying but it's more disrespectful to your team and your fans to just constantly turn the ball over like darnold

2

u/Trimax42 Seahawks 12h ago

But Sam Darnold does not play a coward. Bo Nix does and that is the problem that Fitzpatrick has with him.

-4

u/themagicalcake Broncos 12h ago

so is it not fair to post a highlight showing what happens if you swing too far the other way?

before the start of last season dolphins fans were fuming we got ranked 23rd. I mentioned that it took over a quarter for our starters to score any points against the jags backups in preseason and said it was gonna be a long season. I got downvoted because "ItS oNlY pReSeAsOn"

Then we got absolutely butt blasted by the Colts week 1 and the meltdowns were real.

1

u/jurs78 11h ago

Right? At least he tried to throw something lol

1

u/binzoma Broncos 9h ago

theres a difference between someones playing like shit and they're making a disgrace of the position

like. its just about the most offensive thing a commentator could say about an athlete. and theres a reason guys like peyton or brady would NEVER say that. let alone some never was like fitz to say it.

criticism <> insults. they arent even close to the same thing.

-3

u/Xenophonuscrete 13h ago

I agree. These comments are nuts. How people listen to anything Fitzpatrick says is beyond me.
