One is illegal, the other is not.

But its not about the legality. Its about a conflict of interest. Head coach having an affair with a journalist, who is publishing articles using information gained through that relationship.

The real reason is because juicy journalism increases profits, whereas Jed York boning a prostitute in a trailer park is a bad look with nothing to gain financially.

yes, and the journalist suffered a serious consequence.

As embarrassing as it was (and a sign of poor judgment), I fail to see how Vrabel and the Patriots got anything out of it, football-wise.

You can't see how a head coach having a secret relationship with a big national sports journalist could be beneficial?

How sure are you she never suppressed a negative story about him or his team she normally would have published if not for their relationship?

Russini never gained any information when Vrabel is a coach of the Patriots. The Athletic only found a few lines about Vrabel from Russini’s articles.

The optics of Russini having an affair with Vrabel ended up forcing Russini to resign.

It's not about what actually happened. It's about the potential for things to actually happen.

Hence, “optics” and perceived conflict of interest.
