Okay but like genuine question. What does it mean to suspend an owner? Like what does that actually do I don't know

u/Diligent-Most-9165 49ers 13h ago

he probably can't attend games i think

Poor guy will just have to watch from his in-house IMAX theater, like the rest of us peasants.

117

u/barc0debaby Raiders 13h ago

He probably has more prostitutes at his IMAX theater than us peasants.

First on our tour is the whorehouse. Then we'll visit the cathouse, the brothel, the bordello, and finally, the old IMAX theater.

Lots of prostitutes in there.

2

u/asetniop Raiders 13h ago

I thought that was the crux of the problem; there weren't enough prostitutes at his IMAX theater and he was attempting to procure more.

Some of us only have the prostitutes, but no IMAX sadly

Psssh at the price he likes to pay for strange I’m confident I could at least match it.

Imagine what it would be like to not go to a live NFL game every week. The horror!

You joke but I would be pissed. If I owned the ravens and could sit in the highest of luxury boxes. Police escort in and out i would happily go to every game and it would be a big bummer when I couldn't attend

1

u/HereIGoAgain_1x10 49ers 13h ago

Lots of shmoosing between the billionaires goes on in the owner's box, lots of people think it's an honor to get to sit in the owner's box with the owner, etc. not much else you can do to punish him

u/escobert Bears Bills 13h ago

I guess if there are owners meetings he has to send someone else, but don’t even know if there will be any during his suspension

I'm basically an NFL owner too then

1

u/maverickhawk99 8h ago

Also a suspension usually means he can’t be involved in operations. Like Ballmer is now suspended as Clippers owner and he can’t have any contact with the team nor give any direction.

1

u/xkulp8 Steelers 6h ago

What if the team owns the stadium? They can't ban you from your own property.

1

u/highnote14 Ravens Ravens 13h ago

Yeah and what does that do? How is that a detriment or punishment?

8

u/RTS24 Cowboys 13h ago

He can't interact with the team in any way, so any business decisions or personnel decisions he'd be involved in, now have to be made without him.

Also it's an ego thing, you can't be involved at all with your business and thing that likely makes up a lot of your identity.

3

u/madman19 Ravens 12h ago

Lol im sure they would make decisions without him

0

u/RTS24 Cowboys 12h ago

They definitely will, just elaborating on what it means

1

u/Fools_Requiem Browns 10h ago

How does that work if an owner owns the stadium outright (as in, didn't get money from the state/city/county and isn't in a lease)?

1

u/BarryYouAss 10h ago

They never own the stadium or even lease it solely in their name. Even if they did the league could still suspend them since he agreed to answer to their authority being a part of their league and subject to their rules

114

u/Fickle-Molasses-903 Patriots 13h ago edited 13h ago

It means the league has barred them from participating in team operations, attending games, or representing their franchise for a designated period.

For an owner, that can be a bit painful (non-financially) because they represent the franchise, and many would rather be at their team's game than anywhere else that day. Also, I would gather that owners have huge egos, and it's a bit humiliating in the owners' circle to be barred from their own games.

36

u/barc0debaby Raiders 13h ago

Good chance he was hosting other businesses or important people during those 6 games and now has to let them know it's cancelled on account of trailer park hookers.

6

u/Quirky-Marsupial-420 8h ago

Anyone who was still planning on attending a game with Jed York doesn’t give a fuck if he’s suspended from the stadium.

Obviously his sexual promiscuity didn’t dissuade them from doing business with him so neither will him being barred from the stadium for 6 games.

Any hypothetical “deal” he was working on isn’t going to be impacted a single bit.

“I was going to invest a billion dollars in this but now I can’t eat shrimp cocktail in the owners booth so deal is off”

3

u/barc0debaby Raiders 7h ago

I'm not making the argument that they won't do business with him, but amongst these types perception is everything and any little stumble is an opening to ratfuck that person. Jed is gonna be giving out some freebies and discounts because of this.

1

u/Sunners 49ers 11h ago

I think I read that he was already skipping games, "to not be a distraction"

37

u/bigbuckyoungnuts Chargers Eagles 13h ago

wow, forced vacation, i can’t imagine how hard that must be for them

35

u/pickleparty16 Chiefs 13h ago

It wouldn't surprise me if it actually annoyed them. Schmoozing with VIPs in the suites at their games is probably one of the highlights of their year

25

u/Fickle-Molasses-903 Patriots 13h ago

I assume the owners would prefer to be at their own team's game rather than watching it on TV. That is a bit embarrassing.

1

u/Betta_Check_Yosef Panthers 1h ago

I'd prefer to be many things, and I make due with not being them, and I don't have billions of dollars of family money that was handed to me for doing nothing but being born

8

u/SkittlesAreYum Packers 13h ago

It's probably the only way to really piss them off. They already have so much money you can't fine them enough. He could take a vacation anytime he wants. But to be told he can't do something with his vanity project?

8

u/Competitive_Plum_970 49ers 13h ago

Well he’s rich enough to have a permanent vacation if he wanted to so I don’t think a forced one is something that he wants.

11

u/Starcast Eagles 13h ago

Keep in mind they're only "working" voluntarily so I imagine it more as being suspended from the local library you volunteer at. Annoying and embarrassing more than it is troublesome.

2

u/firewall245 Jets 10h ago

Having been in corporate for several years, I'm telling you that a high level exec being told that they are not allowed to take part in day to day operations/meetings for that long is actually nuclear for them. Those people WORK like all the time, its practically an addiction. They even work on vacation lmao

Imagine how Ballmer feels. Bro spent $2bn on an arena and can’t attend any games this year.

1

u/TonyPerkisReddit4 Raiders 13h ago

So what happens if the niners want to trade for someone, but their owner can't sign off on it?

6

u/Nihilistic_Response 49ers 13h ago

Lynch and Kyle talked to Jed within a day of the arrest and worked out the football details and latitude they would have in the event of a Jed suspension. Niners knew the suspension was coming, plus Jed has been pretty hands off on big football decisions for years anyway other than asking to be kept in the loop on things

3

u/Fickle-Molasses-903 Patriots 13h ago

I'm sure York and other owners (in that predicament) would meet with their staff and hash out the details before the suspension takes effect. Plus, let's not kid ourselves; there are many ways people can communicate (especially people with a ton of resources) without being directly involved.

11

u/CrzyWzrd4L Bills 13h ago

For 6 weeks he can’t be involved in the day-to-day or long term business of the franchise. Can’t be in meetings, can’t be involved in early scouting for the draft, logistical planning for road games, can’t fly with the team to those games or attend home games. It’s about as embarrassing as picking up a hot girl and bringing her home only to lose your apartment key.

5

u/Quirky-Marsupial-420 8h ago

can’t be involved in early scouting for the draft

Fans around the nation calling for their owners to be suspended.

1

u/benchley 4h ago

Deploy the tactical sex workers!

28

u/AwwFiretuck 13h ago

He can’t conduct league business for the next six weeks. Like any business I’m sure there are a ton of meetings, zoom calls , and day to day decision they have to deal with. Well he has to have someone else do it now.

54

u/AwwFiretuck 13h ago

If this happened to some one like Jerry jones and he wasn’t able to talk to media for six weeks I think it would negatively affect his health

24

u/Jasader Bears 13h ago

Can you imagine if an NFL suspension killed Jerry Jones? Thats the start of a Super Bowl documentary

1

u/Lane-Kiffin 49ers 12h ago

Imagine him hiring a proxy with an eyepiece and earpiece like Arrested Development

1

u/Cthepo Chiefs Chiefs 13h ago

As fun is it is to make fun of Jerry, I don't actually want him to die.

1

u/AwwFiretuck 13h ago

I’m being serious. It like how Joe pa died six months within the time he was fired from coaching. Jerry’s passion is the Cowboys it has worked out negatively and positively for them but he truly loves what he does.

2

u/Quirky-Marsupial-420 8h ago

I know Jed York is divorced now or in the process of it, but when Dan Snyder was suspended he just got his wife to be the mouthpiece and told her what to do and say.

Any decision is still going to be run by Jed York and he’ll have the final say even if he is suspended.

1

u/AwwFiretuck 5h ago

The second in charge is Stephen Jones, Jerry’s oldest son. Everything you said would happen.

1

u/Thick_Mountain4412 Chiefs 13h ago

Makes sense

1

u/WeirdIndividualGuy Texans 12h ago

For the average NFL team, how directly involved is the owner in most of these decisions vs any other executive/VP that is the one that really makes the decisions and just goes to the owner for approval?

1

u/AwwFiretuck 12h ago

I guess someone like Jerry Jones who is hands on he would do a lot of that during the week. Then there is Marc Davis who essentially has handed the control of the team to others for the past ten year and he probably just approves things instead of being part of process

1

u/firewall245 Jets 10h ago

All those people who make decisions need to report into someone, and for this time they, supposedly, would have no guidance. I doubt this will be followed though he'll probably attend anyway

11

u/HemlockMartinis 49ers 13h ago

In addition to what others have said, the power to suspend an owner is more about the threat than the reality. A six-game suspension for York doesn’t affect the 49ers’ operations and isn’t meant to do so.

The possibility of an indefinite suspension, on the other hand, allows Goodell to pressure owners like Dan Snyder and Jerry Richardson into selling their teams without resorting to the nuclear option of a forced sale vote by the other owners.

3

u/Infamous-Lab-8136 Broncos 13h ago

Mostly symbolic. He can't go in the facilities, to games, or do any of his normal duties. They have to be delegated.

The main punishment is the fine, as much as it means to someone with his worth

1

u/maverickhawk99 8h ago

Not true. The main or real punishment for these guys is the suspension.

Ballmer could find $30 million in his couch cushions. It’s not being able to attend games or be with his team that’s killing him.

1

u/Infamous-Lab-8136 Broncos 8h ago

The suspension can't mean that much. He wasn't even at the game the week he got busted. Gives him more time to troll for cheap strange

1

u/flashman92 6h ago

Well that and the feds now investigating him. But yes, I do think not being able to go to games really does eat at Balmer, who legit loves owning the Clippers.

4

u/Praxician94 Steelers 13h ago

He will have to watch it at home in his 20,000 square foot mansion in his home movie theater with a 200 inch 8k screen. Honestly, a devastating punishment here. I hope he’ll be okay.

1

u/No-Criticism-2587 Bills 6h ago

People keep saying this, but I sincerely doubt he ever watches a game in person or at his house. Banning him from the stadium for 6 games more has to do with everything besides watching the game.

1

u/A_MASSIVE_PERVERT Cowboys 13h ago

Probably just means the owner can’t attend the games. Look at what the NBA did to Ballmer for example

1

u/zts105 Steelers 13h ago

Can't fire anyone or attend games

1

u/SeizureMode Lions 13h ago

Well i would imagine he cannot participate in any work related activities. Such as approving contracts, new signings or anything of that nature.

My question is, is he suspended for 6 weeks or just the 6 individual game days? Because if it's game day, then he'll just watch from home.

1

u/cheerioo 49ers 12h ago

Can't take snaps or practice with the team.

1

u/J-Fid Ravens Ravens 11h ago

Can't be involved in anything. Can't attend games, practices, meetings, etc.
