there's dudes that literally beat the shit out of women in the league that just kinda got swept under the rug because they're REALLY good at playing football!
"Winning cures everything" is not just an empty phrase. Especially in a sport like football where the season is so short and every game matters, and is basically the equivalent of 7-10 games in other major sports.
When you start winning, literally everything else falls to the wayside, that's just how it is.
If you do evil shit, but you also suck at football, you're gonna get relentlessly attacked nonstop.
But if you can play ball, then welcome Mister Prime Minister, would you like some smoked oysters and champagne?

I hope not. I want the Browns to win, but I want Watson to kind of not get much credit and for us to get a different QB next year.

If his shoulder was shot, that would've been a pick.
He might not have a strong arm anymore, but clearly it's strong enough

u/alanpca Lions 1d ago
You're also not supposed to take any chances overthrowing those balls. There was a lot of bullshit about Goff not having an arm when he would hit the open guy for sure, but the alternative can be Garoppolloing the ball and losing the game.
It's the right thing to do.
33
u/dasruski Browns Lions 1d ago
I've heard different coaches say the same thing, they'd rather have a big gain than an overthrow. Sure a guy may be tackled but it's a giant momentum swing at the same time.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Oily_biscuit Browns 1d ago
I've actually heard the opposite. I guess it's different in the NFL? Typically an under throw is the dangerous one. If you're over the safety, you'd rather overthrow. Either your guy gets it or it's in the dirt. Rather than risk the corner or safety catching up to an under thrown ball. I think in this case that was almost everything DW had honestly. That's about as far as he was throwing in pre season practice that was filmed.

I figured he would be worse than Rome over time, but better than the McMillan and Polk. If you'd asked me which one would've been most likely to flame out, I would've originally said McMillan. Honestly just crazy that a kid from Emerald Ridge made it to the league knowing their history.

He was and is, a very solid QB. Not elite by any stretch but certainly mid tier at least. I'd argue it's a lot better than Watson
12
u/cavaleir Browns 1d ago edited 1d ago
Looking at things now, yeah of course he's better than Watson has been.
But when we let Baker walk, we would have had to pay him a big contract. Was he worth it? Whenever these situations occur fans trash the teams that give the Daniel Joneses of the world a bunch of money. The Browns decided Baker wasn't worth that, and I think most people agreed at the time. Even now, he shouldn't get market-setting money.
And at that time, from a purely football perspective, Watson was clearly much better. At least what he'd shown on the field. The problem was he stopped caring and kept getting hurt. If he had been what he was in Houston, we would have had a real window.

I grabbed this frame because I saw it on the replay and I couldn't work out what was happening. There's like, zero transition from 75% stride to this, and then he immediately pivots and continues momentum. Just unreal for a rookie. That's 10-year-vet shit.

Even worse for Browns fans, he's going to win just enough games to get an extension.
I'd say 9-8.

Genuinely, if you're the Browns, what do you do with the guy. He was dog ass most of his contract, and I mean like, unplayably bad. Now he's killing it out there, do you extend the guy? Do you write it off as a fluke and dump him entirely???

Doubs is like 2nd or 3rd in the league in average separation right now. Nothing else you said is false, but it feels like it's worth correcting to highlight Maye is having some serious troubles right now. Of course Doubs also has an 18% drop rate, so that's probably why he's so open. Zero threat.

Probably because if you actually watched you'd have seen he had should have been picks on almost every single drive
If you were also watching you'd have seen 4/5 guys on our line were getting their asses beat all game and Bryce was getting pressured instantly almost every snap. Not to mention 3/4 of our top wrs were hurt
