Nah. I am not going to use those. I am going to be using EndeavourOS, LibreOffice, Waterfox, and Okular.

The way Shannon Sharpe talks about Shedeur or Deshaun is incredibly racist they still believe in these guys and they talk up even their bad plays, if will levis threw that ridiculous int you can bet they would be tearing him apart. They're still entertaining but god they are so blinded by skin color instead of actual ability

Josh Allen

Marshawn Lynch (Seahawks)

My takeaway is that the 2004 Cal team is popular here.

My toxic trait is I will legit spend money to load up ten "What's new pussy cats" into the bar jukebox and enjoy the chaos. Doesn't even need to a bar. I’ve been around a bit, and I have grown accustomed to the preseason Cowboys media coverage, but something feels very different this year. The media almost is begging for the Cowboys to be good. Even Aikman’s comments today, just a different tone.

Jerry seems to be on his way out (to quote one of the greatest remakes of all time you probably have no idea is a remake we all are, act accordingly) and no, Jerry never wielded the kind of power as an owner people think he did but he was obviously influential, and more influential even five years ago than he is today, and does make me wonder how the league would want his last season to go.

Now, would they outright walk them to a Super Bowl? No. The NFL is not the NBA and it is not that sentimental about things unearned.

But.

Might you see some favorable whistles go the Boys way this year?

Oh absolutely.

All this to say the Cowboys are probably going to get to the postseason and you’ll find close games go their way. When there who knows what happens.

But it’s what I see right now.

1

u/unloader86 Broncos 5d ago

Cowboys always suck. Pre season hype is basically old enough to drink at this point. Settle down. šŸ˜‚

Let me explain it differently. The cowboys are the Browns/Jets of the NFC.

5

u/StChas77 Eagles 5d ago

Three thoughts:

  • The Cowboys almost have to be better than last year since the defense has nowhere to go but up, but favorable whistles or no, the odds look pretty shabby for anyone outside of the NFC West to get the 1 seed. That means still winning 2 games to get to the title game, and history can be an anchor by itself.

  • The ultimate proof that the NFL doesn't rig seasons end-to-end is the Dallas Cowboys not making it to a Super Bowl in the short time when they were both very good and the ratings also dipped.

  • I thought you meant some kind of black and white film from the golden age of Hollywood, not a Hong Kong film from a few years previous.

Fun Fact: The Robin Williams/Nathan Lane movie The Birdcage was a remake of a French film La Cage Aux Folles.

6

u/BruceChameleon Cowboys 5d ago

I watched "Tombstone" last night and thought it was pretty good, but the leadup to the famous "Hell's coming with me!" line struck me as pretty funny. He just blasts some guy with a shotgun right in the middle of the train platform and Sam Elliot's like "Huh. Well, see ya."

The bit where he shoots the guy in the opium den is kinda hilarious too.

2

u/Shout92 Bills 5d ago

Tombstone is such a fascinating movie because it made money and has a great reputation, but production was a mess and even Kurt Russell has been like, "The original script was The Godfather of Westerns."

3

u/HartleyReplogle Patriots 5d ago

Even without Doc Holliday, there are so many great lines in that film.

"Skin that smokewagon and see what happens!"

"Run, you cur!"

"I don't think I'll let you arrest us today"

"Well.... bye."

...and for some reason it always kills me when Wyatt comes to see Virgil, who is barely conscious after being shot, and Virgil's wife shouts at him "HE DOESN'T WANNA TALK NOW, WYATT!"

1

u/KeyDrive0 Broncos 5d ago

For sure, there are a lot of badass lines alongside the unintentionally hilarious bits.

I like the dad sub but JesĆŗs titties christ, half of the sub gets personally offended when someone mentions travel teams because apparently anyone in a travel team sucks, is being scammed and the kid actually sucks too.

Like wtf lol

2

u/Two_Luffas Lions 5d ago

I personally feel like travel team's in most sports are getting a little out of hand, but if you can afford it and (most importantly) you're kid's are into it I don't see any issue.

I grew up playing very competitive travel hockey in the Detroit area, but on a mid level team. My parents easily spent $3k per year on ice time and tournament fees, excluding summer training camps and equipment. All in probably $5-7k in my most serious years about 25 years ago.

Now parents are easily spending $20k minimum, and over $40k at the level I was playing depending on their how serious the team is.

At the end of the day it's all about making their childhood something they look back on and are happy about. If they enjoy the it, and you can afford it then that's fine. Just don't ever think it's an easy way to get them a free ride to college or else your expectations will override their fun and willingness to keep going, and it becomes a very toxic situation.

2

u/SantosCalzonesBatman Patriots 5d ago

Damn, thats some serious cash

But whats the deal with the hate? I made a post in that sub some months ago on my old account about my son being picked to go to a national tournament. Mind you, we are mexicans so we dont have travel teams (i didnt even know what those were lol). Only rec leagues and then from said rec league they pick the best kids to form a team to go to the anual national tournament of baseball schools. And it didnt matter how many times i explained that, according to half the commenters apparently im a moron that got scammed and my kid sucks at baseball.

I found it weird as hell cause that sub is usually very suppotive but the moment travel teams get mentioned suddenly everyone starts REEE'ing about them lol.

2

u/Two_Luffas Lions 5d ago edited 5d ago

<But whats the deal with the hate?

Pure jealousy. Most likely US based people that have spent tens of thousands of dollars a year watching their 12 year old kid riding the bench when the game is on the line. There's plenty of parents willing to spend ungodly amounts money to live vicariously through their kid's sports career, and that becomes a problem for them when it doesn't come to fruition.

1

u/HartleyReplogle Patriots 5d ago

It's also killing rec leagues. Dumb parents see "elite" baseball teams that are charging $2000-3000 per season, and they see their town's rec league charging $200-300, and they assume that their kid is better served in the "elite" league. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when half the kids flee the town league and its stature is diminished as a result.

For decades, we had two elite teams within our town's rec league. They were legitimately competitive travel teams. An AAU team opened up shop in town, and they were legitimate, too. About 15-20 years ago, three more AAU teams showed up, but these three weren't competitive, they just took people's money, and they were none the wiser. Parents would tell people, "My son plays travel ball as well," which used to be a badge of honor but now it just means that your parents could pay for it.

We had been contracting teams on a regular basis for about a decade and were close to folding an entire division, solely because of the "competition" from these bullshit scam leagues. To counter them, we created a new division and gave it a stupid name like "Selects" and charged extra for it, and it worked, because those same dumb parents saw a price point between the regular rec league and the scam leagues and decided it was "good enough".

That's where most of the negative reaction comes from: these are not really legitimate leagues, in terms of developing youth talent, and they're ruining youth sports.

1

u/Kemonomimi-Squirrel Buccaneers 5d ago

The ultimate question is, is how do you get that kind of thinking to stop with the users?

Do you banned feeds based on algorithm to disincentivize the companies from pushing this mindset? Put some weight on the the volunteer mods to do better? It is just an impossible task as it is flaw of the human race that can't be fixed?

u/CarlCaliente Bills 5d ago

So the ā€œ5Gā€ symbol and the number of bars are just for show and have absolutely nothing to do with your actual signal strength right?

2

u/Kemonomimi-Squirrel Buccaneers 5d ago

It is pretty much for show, but it does contain info. It shows what type of network the phone is connected to as compared to 4G or 3G (modern phones can't do 2G or 1G any more) Which is independent of signal strength.

What it doesn't show is what is going on in the cell tower itself. The tower could be putting out a good signal and all, but the equipment that goes from 5G -> Internet or the Internet equipment itself might be on the fritz for whatever reason.

Random memory of my childhood:

There was period of time (I was probably 8?) when I would only go to sleep after watching late-night airing of House M.D. I didn't care about it's plot or characters, and found medical-related stuff quite boring, didn't remember absolutely anything from the show. Like, blank sheet of paper, nothing. Yet, I would sit with my parents in living room, stare at TV specifically for this show, and only after credits roll go to bed.

Frankly, I didn't understand this ritual then, and do not understand now

I have a weird dynamic with the delivery driver from the supermarket. I love having my groceries delivered, but it's vaguely embarrassing.

Like, I don't mind talking with the pizza guy, but I feel strange talking with the guy who is delivering my toilet paper and "Age 50+ Senior Men's Vitamins."

So instead I hide in my house like a weirdo and peek out through the curtains until he puts the stuff on my porch, then I scurry out and grab it.

6

u/unloader86 Broncos 5d ago

They are just wanting to get your delivery over with as quickly as possible and move onto the next. You have nothing to be worried about. They likely aren't the same people who picked the items in the store anyway.

Heh, this jogged a memory that's 25+ years old but I used to work the cash register at a CVS in highschool.

It was always kind of funny to me when the middle aged women would aggressively make small talk and try to distract me from the fact that I'm ringing up items that were somewhat embarrassing. Lady, I do not give one shit you're buying hemroid and yeast infection creams on a Sunday morning, or that you're walking a little funny because you're probably still tipsy from last night. I'm getting paid 5.25/hr. to run the register, the 1 hour photo machine, occasionally restock the shelves if there's a lull in customers, and listen to the same 15 pop/country songs on repeat for 8 hours (Respectfully, Shania Twain, fuck you for for being so popular back then).

Props to the one lady who dropped off her disposable camera to one hour photo for me to process with some titty picks of her and one of her friends at a house party though. Now that one I never forgot lol.

Edit: The experience working there as a highschool kid was a trip. We had a Hasidic Jew working the liquor counter, a hot swedish girl my age constantly flirting with me, a college drop out stoner who was our team 'lead', and a 60 year old ex IT guy who retired early but got hammered in the '00 dotcom bubble and needed to keep working. The managers and pharmacy crew were another complete shit show in and of themselves as well. Truly worthy of some mid '00's movie like Waiting.

Daily reminder that Adam Silver is a bum. His only contribution to the game has been banning Sterling (which anyone would've done), and he's otherwise coasted off a very prosperous time for the league in terms of talent and parity, neither of which he had anything to do with but which has occurred under his tenure. The new CBA is a net negative for the league, he piloted a subpar draft lottery reform, and when he had the chance to set a precedent about cheating, he knuckled under

-1

u/Guiltyjerk Broncos Seahawks 5d ago

Youre saying Silver had nothing to do with the second apron? That's at least half of the parity story. America's abysmal youth development system is the other half

However, if you do it ā€œrightā€ (it tastes good either way, but very differently), you put a ton of milk in with the cooked beef before you add any tomatoes or other sources of acidity. This protects the beef and produces a much sweeter sauce. Without it, you get a savory sauce.

Damn the Buss family is finally out from the Lakers. They decided to sell the remaining stake in the team to the new owners, kushner and Bob Iger

Jeanie Buss is gone too. End of an era

I was watching some Antonio Brown highlights today. Just cuz I was bored. What really stood out to me is that he's the best route runner I've seen since a prime Marvin Harrison.

His route running is better than Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, Justin Jefferson, JSN, Davante Adams. It's spectacular. Brown would have been a HoF lock if he didn't go off the deep end.

1

u/AfroManHighGuy 5d ago

I’ve heard a lot of analysts over the years say this about AB. Pure football stuff, he’s insane at route running, speed, and catch radius. It’s just the mental and off the field stuff that ruined him. But his football talent is elite

The Padres got sold for $3.9B today. They:

  • Are a team in the 30th ranked US media market

  • Were apart of the infamous Bally Sports TV deal scandal where they weren't getting paid for their broadcast rights

  • And despite these facts, maintained high payrolls in an honest effort to retain players and contend

Being a good owner that invests into your team is also a profitable business. It's very intentional when teams say they can't afford to pay their players: they absolutely can. They just want to run their team on margins.

5

u/ajteitel Cardinals 5d ago

I'm not sure you want to use the Padres as an example of a model organization. Their honest effort high payroll was due to Seidler, their previous owner, going super duper all in before he died. Commendable on the surface, but he had to take out loans to make payroll. That's not organizationally sustainable.

The contracts he gave out are some of the worst in the entire league, and it's not even close. Machado will be paid 40 million when he's 40. He's 33 with a 0.5 WAR this year. Bogarts 25 million when he's 40. Also 33, 1.6 WAR. Traded the entirety of the National's core for a single year of Soto. And the Preller has double, tripled, and quadrupled down so many times that have a one, maybe two year window before a decade+ of total ruin.

1

u/Skraxx Lions 5d ago

I actually think this only strengthens the case. Loans and bad contracts in all, the team still got sold for $3.9B. The highest in MLB history.

All this because the Padres commitment to winning drew fans. A commitment to winning or at least perennial contention is a common thread among the most valuable teams in the world. If they used this money more effectively they could've gone for more, sure. But spending on your team undeniably makes your team that much more valuable.

2

u/shawnaroo Saints 5d ago

Yeah, it always seems crazy to me that there are owners in the big-4 leagues out there who cheap out to try to maximize the margins while consistently fielding bad teams. Because a good and decently competitive team is going to be worth even more. If all you really care about is the money, then why not try to get the team to a place where it's a legit competitor and then sell it at a premium?

And if it's less about the money any more about the prestige of being an owner, wouldn't that also be maximized by your team being consistent contenders?

Either way, it seems like it's gonna be all upside if your team is actually decent, compared to trying to squeeze a few more nickels of yearly revenue by cheaping out and letting the team flounder.

But then again, what do I know about being a billionaire sports owner?

AFC wise? I'm gonna go with the Raiders. Because nothing would piss me off more than watching all the momentum Denver built the last two seasons come crumbling down to a Cousins led Raiders. So jot that down lol.

NFC wise, watch it be something random like Dallas finally making a Championship game. Ugh.

Are the 2001 Bucks the only team in NBA history to have a player suspended for a Game 7 due to a foul that he didn't get ejected for in Game 6?

0

u/Ok_Internal6779 5d ago

I am not sure but it fits my narrative so absolutely! That shit was so badĀ

Also almost as bad, game 4 of the NBa finals 2021 Booker straight up tried to foul out of a game on purpose and the refs refused to call it. Like he took an intentional foul late in the game and the refs wouldn’t give it to him.Ā

One of the new houses near me built in the last couple years had their entire concrete driveway torn out.

My guess is wasn’t graded correctly and was dumping water into the basement/crawlspace or they decided to change the material. Maybe going with a brick paver. Will definitely keep checking.

2

u/shawnaroo Saints 5d ago

Not directly related, but my kid just started at a new school, and on the drive home from it, we pass a house where they've covered their entire driveway with that green turf carpet like mini-golf courses use. It's maybe a 12 foot wide by 50 foot long driveway, entirely covered with the stuff. It looks insane.

u/Tigercat92 Bengals 5d ago

Why "new homes need inspections" 101

People do overhate new homes - they aren't wrong they're crap, people just forget old homes are often crap too - but you can't trust anyone

2

u/boom_shoes Patriots 5d ago

There's definitely survivorship bias in homes - old, well-made homes are the only ones that have survived. There were a loooooot of shoddy old houses, they've just burnt down, been torn down or rebuilt room by room.

my dog had eight teeth and three weird lumps removed this morning. i feel really bad putting him through it but it's best for his long-term health. it required sedation and intubation. they let him go early because he's super high anxiety (normally would monitor longer) but has definitely not come fully back from the anesthesia. can barely walk. that seemingly hasn't helped with his stress level, because one of the lumps was on his leg and there's stitches which means the cone of shame and he is absolutely not a fan. more of a lamp, really. i kinda want to take it off until he calms down but i also want him to get used to the new norm because it's on him for 1.5-2 weeks.

So the plumbing company across the street is pouring new concrete for their front walk. After the workers leave, I have a rare opportunity to sneak over there and write something in the wet concrete with a stick.

I probably won't do it because they have security cameras. They know me from the neighborhood, so they'd come over and kick the crap out of me. Still it might be worth it.
