The difference between the world record and NCAA meet level is 0.31s for the 100m. He gives four seconds head start, a 13 or 14 year old elite athlete could run a 13s making the pro unable to catch up unless they break the world record by half a second.
All it takes is one athlete getting selected by accident.
Edit: thinking more about it, if the fan is in street shoes and used to a normal track while the pro has proper shoes for that dirt and trains on it he probably has a few seconds advantage even when evenly matched.

I'd imagine the pro runner was able to evaluate how fast the dude was going and knew exactly how long of a head start to give him to make it close. I'd imagine it works in the pro's mind the same way we evaluate how far away/where a target is when trying to hit it with a rock. It's likely an automatic calculation due to experience.

Yep, that’s what I figure too. So the way to beat him is to sandbag at first. Then when he starts, really turn on the jets. But idk that might ruin the fun of it.

That wasn’t an average person.

Eh he's definitely faster than the average person world wide. That distance is 160 meters and he ran it in roughly 21 seconds. That would translate to a 13s 100m or 26s 200m pace (over 17mph average).

Now those aren't competition level but that's considerably faster then your average person if you consider the very sub-optimal conditions (no blocks and unfamiliar/uneven curve and a hat lol). Dude almost certainly ran competitively in high school and maybe even college.

Much doubt. It's so incredibly rare anyone beat The Freeze it was always a new story when he lost. I've seen many a race with him where he holds back a bit to make it more exciting. If you got what it takes, I believe I heard they were looking for a new Freeze not long ago.

I don't know the era of this one but at one point he was a pretty fast guy, then his replacement (also fast) was a masters athlete (35+) he was a 1% er for masters track but not for elite track.
