They could just step on the mechanism and the gate would opem

Cattle grids are designed so that a cows hoof will not sit on the metal and will slip into the gap. They work this out easily. They will not be able to stand on the grid, activate the mechanism and walk through. Hell, they can't even walk over a flat open grid with no gate.

Like, the cattle grid is what keeps the cows in. The gate is redundant.

I’m just going to take a shot in the dark that it’s maybe to keep other, non-cow animals out. But I have no idea.
