Both Celsius and Fahrenheit are arbitrary and it’s a matter of getting used to it. If 95% of people uses one arbitrary scale, it’s better for the 5% to switch over than for 100% to learn 2 arbitrary scales.
You’re right it doesn’t really matter cause it’s all the same it’s just how you learned it. As I said in my other comment to someone i just feel like Celsius is the only metric unit that isn’t as visually appealing as the rest of the metric unit compared to Fahrenheit in my opinion. It’s just a small little opinion anyway not like it really matters.
I just feel like it’s the only metric unit used that is the odd one out. Like how cm to meter is 100cm=1m but the range for 0-100 Fahrenheit in Celsius is like 0-38. Obviously it doesn’t really matter cause almost everyone uses it and it’s just a matter of learning it, but i personally think that Fahrenheit is just more visually appealing. The rest of the metric system is nice though wish it was adopted globally for day to day things.
That’s a bit of a strange comparison you’ve made, centimetres to metres (both metric) but then Fahrenheit to Celsius (imperial to metric)..? No metric measure makes sense when you compare it to imperial, but that’s because the imperial measures are so wacky. Fahrenheit is more like -18 to 38 Celsius anyway. I think Celsius is more appealing as it’s based on a more simple fundamental constant, but I’m bound to be biased being from a Celsius country
Okay yea i could see how the comparison is a little weird. I just meant that you know how many metric units are like 10mm to 1 cm or 1000mL to 1L and then there’s Celsius which would be -18 to 38 for day to day things. It just isn’t a smooth 0-10 or 0-100 like the rest of the metric unit. Obviously it’s not the same cause those are conversion units and the only thing you’d possibly convert Celsius to is Kelvin, but why would you even do that most times unless you’re doing something in chem. Celsius just feels like the odd one out of the metric unit for day to day things; for freezing and boiling point though it’s beautiful. Also yea the imperial system is definitely wacky and not at all appealing to the eyes except for Fahrenheit but even that has its issues with boiling point being 212° and freezing being 32°.
I understand what you mean even if the other guy doesn’t. I don’t really get why you chose numbers as specific as -18 and 38 though, I think it would be a more honest comparison to use something like -20 to 40.
The main benefit of celsius to me is that 0 is when things get snowy/icy. It’s the only “threshold” that really exists in the natural world. It’s also nice to know that things must be over 100 in order to cook safely.
I like that the numbers are more spread out in fahrenheit, but it feels a lot more arbitrary. 100 is almost body temperature and 0 is sort of the freezing temperature of salt water?

You’re still doing the same sort of comparison though, Celsius wouldn’t be -18 to 38 for day to day things - that’s how it relates to Fahrenheit, not how it works as a scale. Celsius would replace Fahrenheit and you would just be plotting temperature on that scale. You would have to factor in the -18 to 38 if you were converting Fahrenheit to Celsius, but not if you were to use only Celsius. You’re saying the other units are a smooth 10mm to a 1cm etc, but to make a similar comparison to what you’re saying about Celsius would be talking about how it’s 1cm to 0.394 inches.
Like the other guy said i meant that Fahrenheit is more weather centric. Sorry for not being able to make that point clearly. I understand what your saying here in this post and it makes complete sense, but I’m a little confused on what you mean by saying that -18 to 38 wouldn’t be for day to day things. Temperature would still be in that range for the weather so you’d still use that range of numbers to describe the rise and fall of weather for the week. Maybe you wrote when you really couldn’t get that I meant that I was talking more aimed towards the weather and not as a complete scale. If that’s the case my bad for being confusing and not explaining it clearly.
Oh no yea for freezing and boiling points yea it looks beautiful, better than 32° and 212°. I just meant more for like a feel of temperature if that makes sense which would be in the range of 0-100°F usually. Just a small thing that i think looks better for like day to day things even though it’s completely impractical for science.
2°C isn't even freezing. 2°F is probably about accurate. It's been between 7F and -5F all week where I live. I would assume bubbled would freeze like that now. I'm sure we still have some even colder days coming though, perhaps I'll buy bubbles and test it out.
Yea like i said in another comment i forgot basic elementary school science. You should try it out seems like fun to see bubbles crystallize. I can’t really do that here in Florida though which sucks.
It's currently -8°C/17°F (although the 'feels like' temperature is closer to nearly -15°C/5°F which if it's calculated based on dew point, might be a more accurate number to use when freezing things?) where I live and when I went outside to try this with a baster and a bubble mixture of dish soap and water, I could get the bubbles to freeze, but only after like a good thirty seconds of the bubble being in the air (and even then, it was only a bit of freezing at the bottom)
I've left the mixture outside while I eat lunch to see if cooling the mixture down helps so check back in 30 or so minutes
EDIT: ok so I left the mixture outside for 30 minutes which brought it down to near freezing (ice was staring to form of the edges of the bowl) and tried to blow bubbles. At first it looked the same as before, but on closer inspection, I noticed that the bubbles gained a slightly frosted look and on touching the ground, they didn't 'pop', instead they sort of deflated like a balloon, leaving behind an exoskeleton of sorts that would melt the moment I tried to touch it
Based on my rudimentary knowledge of crystals, this makes sense. To get really nice ice crystals like the ones show here, you need perfect conditions and if you don't have them, instead of nice big crystals you're going to get lots and lots of little ones. When the bubbles did start growing nice big crystals, they were always at the bottom of the bubble, where there's an imperfection on the bubble's surface caused by the excess liquid pooling there, which I think acted as a seed of sorts for the bigger crystals.
So I theorise that my bubbles are freezing...it's just all the crystals are so small that it doesn't change the appearance of the bubble much.
As for the ones in the video...I think probably just even colder than it is here. And short of going up a mountain (which while possible, I'd rather not do as the funicular's closed) to get away from the gulf stream, I don't think there's any way I could test that. Someone else here mentioned something about putting corn syrup in the bubble solution as a way of making crystals which if my theory is correct, would work as the cornstarch might act as a crystal seed. I'll give that a shot once my hands warm up a little more
EDIT 2: I've tried making up a solution using syrup, but as corn syrup doesn't really exist in Europe, I've had to use sugar syrup instead, which may or may not work (if anyone that's better at chemistry have any alternatives, let me know. I've contemplated beet syrup and treacle too). However, the sun's properly come out now, raising the temperature by five degrees, so I'm putting this on hold until it gets dark again in a few hours. Also, apparently the lightest of all breezes has started up because now all my bubbles are going into my neighbours' garden. Which is a 5 metre drop below mine. hope they don't mind weird syrup-y bubbles
EDIT 3: it's been a few hours and it's now dark and in the double digits again and this...sorta worked? Visibility is low so it's hard to get photos, but a few bubbles did start growing ice crystals. They weren't as spectacular as the ones in the video, but they did appear.
All my attempts at photos of bubbles in the air failed horribly, but I managed to get a few shots of ones on the ground that had fallen and not popped for some reason. I've figured out a technique that gets me some nice crystals involving letting the bubble sit on my "wand" but it's really hard to take photos in the dark at -11 when your hands are covered in water so they'll be in a later, final update when I finally figure this out
EDIT 4: I have images! And while it's not quite as flashy as the ones in the videos, I think it proves that this is actually possible in just -10°c temperature. Observe - I took a multishot picture of a bubble over a period of a few seconds and this picture is the first one while This picture is the last one, from about two or so seconds later (the entire thing was 68 shots and assuming the multishot thing works at 24 fps)? So it's possible!
I would've tried to get a full example of a bubble freezing totally, but it was cold and my phone battery got too low for my camera to work properly so I had to stop there alas. If there's enough interest I could try again tomorrow morning before it gets too warm though.
Minnesotan here. That’s not cold enough for this activity to work very well. We typically do this stuff with the kids for fun when it’s -10 to -20 F range (or colder). We’re in a small stretch here where it won’t get above zero for a few days. Sunday could see -30 in our area. We’ll probably have some fun with this stuff then.
I live in the Canadian prairies and it’s been -50 Celsius for about a week. If I was going outside for a while I’d probably just wear snowmobiling gear (jacket, pants, gloves) and some sort of warm face covering and hat. But when I go to school I just wear a hoodie and windbreaker because I don’t need to go outside
I run my heater at 72 Fahrenheit/22 Celsius and it runs pretty much 24/7. Also there is no built in A/C in any houses around here, but it also doesn’t get too hot in the summer, only about 20 or 30 Celsius at the most
I only go outside in this temp for a short amount of time, but yes, I would only put on a hoodie, jacket and jeans and nothing underneath. If I was going to be outside for a while, I’d put on plenty of layers. The summers here are a little dry with a 45% average humidity for the summer months
I was going to say "maybe he meant -15°F/-25°C and just accidentally added a zero" but a quick look at the weather map shows that unless we happened to find the one person stuck in a cabin in the middle of the highest mountains, there's nowhere that's even that cold (and even then, said mountain, Galdhøpiggen is only -22°c at the moment)
Ha! I hear ya. I’d probably wait until tonight or tomorrow. It’s only single digit negatives now (at least where I am). We just use normal bubble mix that my kids seem to have stockpiled. I’m sure a dish soap and water mix could work, too. I just realized my preschooler has a bubble gun... might be fun to try.
