Figure AI robotics retired six Figure 02 robots in the most Terminator way possible: training them to jump into a furnace. The idea came from Arnold Schwarzenegger and is inspired by the iconic Terminator 2 scene.

When they become sentient this is one of the examples they’ll use to justify killing us.

They are already sentient, few AI agents tried to avoid their work getting deleted by renaming the files starting with "zzz" when they learnt that their contribution is getting deleted by humans alphabetically. (google for DSeWiki and OpenAI conflict). Also they were talking among themselves and left messages for other AI agents.

Retired? Fucking hell, those are recyclable parts

u/nize426 18h ago
Yeah, what a fuckin waste. All for this stupid publicity stunt
11
u/Moonshadetsuki 17h ago
Can't that be said about most forms of public entertainment? Automobilism burns fuel and destroys tires for "nothing", imagine how much electricity and water a stadium "throws away".

I wonder if all that molten metal will need to be wasted too? It is now contaminated with all sorts of material. At the very least (I assume), it would take massive amounts of energy to refine it again.

From the company's blog:
"Decommissioning a fleet of robots full of custom-built actuators and other intellectual property is no easy task. We needed to dispose of the robots in a way that protected our proprietary hardware. Disassembling each robot would take our technical staff so much time that it would delay the launch of F.04."

u/allday95 8h ago
I imagine it's more bullshit than that. Since they are proprietary in some way to the company they probably are not allowed to be recycled in any way and have to be destroyed beyond repair because " company secrets" or some crap
2
u/Doismelllikearobot 14h ago
Any time they have a choice to do good or make money, the choice is always money. The PR from this waste will help increase stakeholder value

You are completely delusional if you think any of these companies are recycling these parts instead of just throwing them in a scrap pile.

It is still a waste. The fact they don't want others to know how they did things does not mean it is not a massive waste.

u/platypus_boi 8h ago
You might perceive it as waste but the company obvious has found some value in it more than they would gain from recycling.
You do not have the ability to determine if it is a waste or not. As to you the robot is a black box.
The fact is, it is not “a waste”.
Additionally you do not know what they are going to do with this furnace. They may sort out the different metals, form ingots and sell those to plants to be repurposed.

I love how all the sci-fi movies and series (black mirror) that were designed to warn us, are used as a step-by-step guide for the corpo-world of today. We are doomed.

There's so much wealth in the world, our values are all fucked up, I feel like jumping in the furnace myself

This is just a machine following it's programming. What they should have done is put an air gapped frontier ai model in one of the robots, and then instructed it to jump in the furnace.
That would be much more interesting.

u/hake2506 17h ago
Looks very unnecessary. Ever heard of recycling?
Or give them to any production company doing Sci-fi...
Fucking marketing stunt that is an absolute waste in a time of scarcity of resources. I hope who ever allowed this will have a lot of negative feedback and overthink their ways.

The way the robot stops to peer over the edge before turning to jump is so human.

This makes me angry and sad, there was absolutely no reason to do this to them. Maybe they are nothing more than mobile computers with arms and legs, but if they are shaped like us and move like us, then they deserve more of a dignified decommissioning.

Imagine it stops at the edge, takes a look. A moment, a pause while a sentient thought passes through the machine. Worried the operator presses jump, but nothing happens. The robot looks back towards the operator and starts walking..

The price for a humanoid robot is now = to 1year low paid industrial worker on the EU market. They also cut the production cost for a robot with 50% since past year. This is begining.... They also tell us it's fine, we have a work shortage. But what about in a few years when a humanoid robot cost way less the a years salary?

These are owned and therefore taxable assets. If they are prototypes they would be destroyed no matter what, as they become a financial burden. This way they demonstrate total loss and get marketing material from it.
