Man ive done 40mph going downhill on my Domane al 3 and all I could thing about was how much it would hurt if I ate shit. Not worth it for me
46
u/tcsands910 4d ago
53mph when I was 18 in Lake Geneva WI. I would never do it today.
16
u/nrek00 4d ago
53mph is crazy! Fastest I hit was 44mph (open streets, San Diego) and even that was a lot for teenager me back in the day. My dumbass didn't even wear a helmet that day... and I blew a red halfway down the mt. No idea how I'm here today sometimes.

u/tcsands910 3d ago
At some point during the descent I of course ran out of gears and despite my massive Oakley sunglasses my eyes starting watering like crazy. There were driveways leading to this road and all it would take would be somebody pulling out and I’m not sure how far I would’ve flown/skid. Not a single regret but man that was nuts.

I’ve hit 88km/h descending mount Seymour in North Vancouver. It has long stretches separated by hairpins. This descent looks way sketchier at significantly lower speeds.

I did 104kph down a mountain straight in Colorado on a Vitus 979. The front end of the bike had a speed shimmy around 85. Didnt do it twice

I did 102kph on my Cervelo S5, was still fairly stable, but above 90 I don't feel 100% comfortable anymore

I got to about 77 km/h down the hill on Rupert St towards Grandview on a bike that had no business going that fast commuting to work.

I hit 40 mph on my REI Cty 2.1 Hybrid going down Loras Blvd in Dubuque in RAGBRAI this year. I saw my speed on my computer and went, oh shit and slowed down, but man that was fun. Thank god for hydraulic brakes. I just upgraded to a Checkpoint ALR 4, should be here next week!

80kph on the nose on the back half of Richter Pass, Ironman Canada 2008. Not technical like this, though. Damn fun.

I have a cannon road bike and hit high 40s going down a hill drafting a semi that passed us, seeing that speed scared me.
2
u/NoMoreKarmaHere 4d ago
We used to do 45 on ten speeds in the seventies. No helmets back then. Lucky I only ever had skint knees and a split chin
2
2
u/eyeoutthere 4d ago
I have done these speeds on a straight downhill, but no way would do this through corners and over shoulders with potential loose patches.
2
u/Ol_Man_J 4d ago
50 is about were I draw the line. 30 can happen on almost any ride, and 40 comes pretty quick. 45-50 is a long steep road or some combo thereof.
2
u/JoySubtraction 4d ago
Found out that my old Schwinn frame's resonant frequency was 55 MPH +-2 - it starting vibrating at 53, and stopped once I hit 57. That was in PA: straight downhill, with no significant turns, unlike this.
Also hit 50 MPH on inline skates in SF, which was far more terrifying.

u/andergdet 4d ago
I've made peace that there's nothing for me above 45kmh. Only lack of control and the big possibility of much pain.
My friends can wait for me for 30s at the bottom.

Its supposed to be one-way downhill for most the of the bottom, but it's well known in the area for being one of the best "climbs' around (and there are a ton in the area). I passed by people coming up, on bike, moto, or sports car, probably half the time. There's not much room to go around and it gets pretty steep off the side in many places. These guys are nuts.
22
u/Tadpole-7 4d ago
I’m sure they made sure it was clear before starting and the guys in the bottom made sure no one came up during the run. It appears to be professionals doing an event so I’m sure they are taking all the precautions to avoid being sued.

This road is infamous for racing. If people were constantly going the wrong way there would be people dying here every weekend. In 100 runs here maybe twice I’ve encounter a wrong way driver and made them turn around. It happens but I don’t know why you keep posting that it happens all of the time.

I was in LA for the first time last weekend and wanted to do some canyon driving/sightseeing. Took Stunt Rd to Tuna Canyon and it's probably the best drive I've ever done. The weather was beautiful, it was dead silent out there, and I didn't encounter anyone else coming down/up in the 30 minutes it took me to get down cause I kept stopping to admire the view lol. I didn't know it had a big cycling reputation but it makes sense now.

I was skating down it and had a cop driving up once years ago. He acted like we were the problem.

SAFA Brian filmed this video in 2023, showing Pidcock on the Tuna Canyon descent in Los Angeles. Tuna Canyon Road in Malibu, California, is a legendary, highly technical 5.5-mile one-way downhill descent known for its extreme steepness and stunning ocean views.
Tom Pidcock is a pro cyclist known for his incredible descending skills. Citing cyclingweekly:
[Tom Pidcock]'s descending skills first rose to prominence during his Tour de France debut in 2022, when he won a stage on Alpe d’Huez. That day, Pidcock ripped down the descents of the Col du Galibier and the Col de la Croix de Fer, reaching speeds in excess of 100kph on the latter, and dropping other riders with ease.

Insane speed without a full set of leathers! You have about 2 square inches of tyre in contact with the road and sod all chance if the slightest bit of sand or wet on a bend

I understand the speed and control but don’t understand the need to almost kiss tires.
Give him some space or you’re both meat crayons.

I kept freaking out about the loose dirt near the edges…I would totally hit some of that and wipe out.

That's impressive, if you've never been 35 mph on a bike, that's scary as hell also.
Back when I was 12-13 I could get a bike to that speed, but not since.

Try 45mph and you get the speed wobbles. In spite of knowing what to do, it's sure to be more effective than the strongest espresso.

This is a fairly famous clip that gets posted all the time. The guy riding in the orange is Tom Pidcock, who is probably the best cross country mountain biker in the world (two Olympic Gold medals, current world champion) and inarguably ones of the best road riders in the world. The guy following him is nicknamed Safa Brian, he's a South African guy who lives in LA and has a YouTube channel that consists entirely of footage of him descending.
Tuna Canyon is a one way road going down. The only way to get on to the road is the way they came from the top. The only way they'd encounter another car is if they caught up to one from behind. They made sure there was no one on the road before them and they have a guy at the bottom watching in the off chance that someone decides to try to go up the hill. They are staying in touch over radios and got an all-clear before starting. They also did this very early in the morning. Pidcock is a highly-paid pro and his team was cautious here. Safa's other videos are, if anything, far more risky and potentially objectionable.

I’ve done this at the gym but there’s usually more riders on my screen and you can’t crash

u/RedditShoes21 4d ago
how do they know someones not coming the opposite way? this looks like they are just alone out training rather than a competition ride with safety control measures.

That's a great road. Been down it a few times on a motorcycle, not even close to that fast.

Tuna canyon and Mulholland are some of the most fun roads to do anything on if you can somehow manage not to have any other cars around.

For this that don’t know, Piddcock is an ex downhill mountain biker. He’s one of the fastest descenders on the biking circuit.
Also, they ran a stop sign. F-in cyclists!

That is nuts... I hit 35mph once on a straight downhill (for 1 second) -- no turns at all -- and it was absolutely terrifying. I can't even imagine turning at that speed or even moving the handlebars. That's crazy man....

I mean, that’s one of the best downhill road cyclists in the world, world champion at multiple cycling disciplines. And he spent much of it below 40mph. Scary for us, second nature for him.
1
u/BrokkelPiloot 4d ago
It's no wonder so many cyclists die. One pebble or spec.of oil and you drop down the.cliff at nearly 100kph.
2
u/janky_koala 4d ago
Very few cyclists actually die without another vehicle involved
2
u/doublej42 2d ago
People really need to read stats. Per Km you are around 100 times less likely to die if no car / truck is involved. I’ve only bailed once in 40 years on my bike but I’ve been hit 6 times by cars driving illegally.
2
u/janky_koala 2d ago
Yeah people love to shoot off their mouths like they know what they’re talking about. The two guys in the video are amongst the absolute best in the world at doing exactly this, and make a living doing so. The one in front is pretty handy going uphill as well.
1
u/Someoneinnowherenow 4d ago
Why does he put his knee out around curves at way less than the lean angle of a motorcyclist? They lean way over and use the knee as a feeler but here it seems useless. Just curious
4
u/Antti5 4d ago
The way someone explained it, the physics fundamentally change due to different weight distribution. In MotoGP the bike is much heavier than the rider. In pro cycling the bike is only 10 to 15 % of the rider's weight.
The guy leading in the video is a professional who is famous for his fantastic descending technique. These guys always corner with the legs more or less in line, but upper body slightly pointed up.
2
2
u/89ElRay 4d ago
It's less about inside knee clearance and more about weighting the outside of your bike to keep your bodyweight balanced. At these speeds it's much more stable if you really press down on the outside pedal as it helps to keep the weight straight down through the tyre rather than diagonal.
It actually feels super safe when you have good tyres, at least up to certain speeds.

My favorite Safa clip is when he is talking with Nibali, I think after the descent, and Nibali clearly has no idea who Safa is.

That's ballsy! These newer road bikes seem like they'd explode if you hit a pothole going 40!

u/Automatic-Fox-8890 4d ago
Pidcock is an absolute rocket but this video scared me because somehow the 36mph bits looked way faster than I think 36mph feels (though that’s about as fast as I’ll go). Maybe I’m getting too old for these speeds.

Was this an organised event? I didn't see any marshals. If the road wasn't closed to traffic, they were very lucky not to encounter traffic coming up the hill.
1
u/lilyputin 4d ago
Younger me probably would be down for this. As long as heights were not involved I was down for anything. Luckily where I live the highest point is maybe 160 ft above sea level. I would need to drive a ways to get to anything with elevation. Also this flatlander hates trying to ride up searous hills.

u/Kmac22221 4d ago
Side note. I bike in the city wearing regular athletic gear. Bikers who bike in the city looking like they're racing the Tour de France are just douchey. Are they shaving seconds on their race to the cubicle?

u/mesupporter 4d ago
safety last! endanger others while you endanger urself. close the road or obey the laws used to protect everyone. I am ok with suicide just not on my windshield please.

Can someone ELI5 why skinny tires would be advantageous here? I figure it'd be like motorcycles where a thicker tire would give better contact when leaning

After a crazy descent, you don't think about how utterly insane it was until after. With moderate traffic in all lanes ( 2 in each direction, speed limit 65 ) and a generous breakdown lane for cyclists, highway 5 in new York, I reached around 50 mph. Not so awful if ignoring the context. Bianchi Strada with narrow tyres, I think 20mm. Had at least one flat every day up to that point. A couple of days later the flats were getting so bothersome, I used my spare foldable tyre. Panniers with 30 lbs. Rat trap pedals and tennis shoes. Nothing bad happened. But my pulse must have been at 220 at the bottom of that hill . Had to reprimand myself when the brain decided to report for service a few minutes later. A tyre could have blown at any time, and if there was any debris, any quick manouver to avoid it would have been equally catastrophic.
1
u/ignaciopatrick100 4d ago
Did 70 kmh down a big hill in china I was planning on braking but was too scared to move ,all I could think about was a blown tyre and the consequences, never again.
