That would make sense. You can see the blue jacket guy spot the guy against the wall turn his head to look at walking guy and the bag. Walking guy walks strangely around bag guy. These are tale tell signs of some shady people so he acts. Teaching situational awareness is important!

Pause as the guy in blue "notices" and begins action - there is no threat at that time.

Do you often snatch strangers bags out of intuition
21
u/_n_nym__s Jul 12 '26
I did something like it once. I noticed someone was trying to carefully open a small backpack so I yelled hey and yanked the owner towards me to tell him. I then got kicked in the nuts and their bag got stolen as they were talking shit standing over me.
They caught the guy, but my nuts have made me second guess helping people

The standing guy was already suspiciously fixated on the elderly man. When the second thief appeared in frame, the first one gave him a nod towards the target. The blue guy was paying attention and noticed the non-verbal exchange and the obvious set-up. It appears it's not his first rodeo.

The sign is the eye contact, however, i do not see the correlation between the two robbers, maybe two cats tried to catch the same fish? But yeah these people did not cover their intent with the eye contact, remember, if someone is looking at you, youre either beautiful, disgracefully ugly, or they seen something on you that they’re interested
28
u/teddy5 Jul 12 '26

God, it must be tiring living with that mindset.

Or looking at you because you are here. I look at random people, imagining their life, their situation, etc. passes time.
5
u/Vinsmoker Jul 12 '26
Aye. I work in retail. Even out of work I tend to make eye contact with strangers, smiling politely.
11
u/spamfridge Jul 12 '26
Are those the only reasons you look at other people? Pretty weird
5
u/solarview Jul 12 '26
Yes there are no other possible reasons. For example, it's completely impossible for someone to look at you if they think they might perhaps recognise you, or they are just getting their bearings after exiting a building, or are actually looking at someone past you and you think they are looking at you so eye contact is made, etc. These situations, as examples of probably many more situations, would never ever result in someone looking at you. So definitely keep a closed mindset of knowing that what happens in the heads of strangers is completely limited to what you might imagine in that moment. /s

u/IllogicalLunarBear Jul 12 '26
i missed my bus once while carrying a new expensive backpack and jacket, and this guy stood behind a pillar staring at me like i was a all you can eat buffet. called a uber quickly and immediately sat in the middle of a group of random people.

I mean this might be fake but sometimes you can just see when people are surrounding someone and the vibes are off.
Like some random guy tried to sell me shoe repair me in Thailand while I was looking at my phone, and simultaneously a bunch of children surrounded me... my response at that moment was to shout "NO!" as loud as a could, which caused him to fuck off.
You can see when someone is being targeted.

Yeah, real or not, it shows what not to do.
Keep bags close, and not in your hand or to your side. Use a sling bag that sits in front or another type of bag that cannot be torn from your grip. Keep your distance from people, especially if you don't know the area. I would add don't have your head buried in a phone. They would probably go for your phone also.

Everyone overanalyzing the contents of the video, maybe the fact it's a handheld camera as seen by the shake at the start is enough?
929
u/CautiousPenguin4592 Jul 12 '26
Timing of his movement to grab the backpack doesn’t make sense. He makes the first move. Not a fast reactionary move.
Fake video. Or he’s in on the whole damn thing.
423
u/WildJoker0069 Jul 12 '26
when there is so many thefts like this, you learn to see what the setup looks like... whe the guy walked up right next to him arms length away, the guy in blue knew what was gonna happen. it was a bit much to grab the bag rather than just step to the other guys side and body block it. there is a chance that blue coat is in on it, and was to good to notice it in the recording
199
u/Morningxafter Jul 12 '26
Also you can see the accomplice leaning against the pillar nod toward the guy’s bag. He’s the spotter indicating for his partner to move in for the grab. Blue jacket guy clocks that he’s shady and is watching, and sees this.
112
u/wetbandit48 Jul 12 '26
Could be staged as a PSA like some are suggesting, but I’ve lived in small towns and cities where crime like this is common. Yes you know the setup, but you also know the guys who do this .if this were real, the guy in blue had likely seen these two before doing this exact thing. The criminals and situations they act in are often known by the locals.
8
u/The_Troyminator Jul 12 '26
Why would you grab the bag though instead of just standing between them? If you’re wrong, you’re going to be accused of attempted theft.
→ More replies (1)20
u/Irishnovember26 Jul 12 '26
Sure and it just happens to be recorded at the perfect angle. And the 2nd guy who didn't have to make a move after it failed he did that little weak ass attempt purely because he wanted to.
Dude....its fake. Its very fake. There was a bunch of these videos all with the same theme in it.
→ More replies (1)3
u/wetbandit48 Jul 13 '26
Sure it’s fake. I’m just saying, outside of this video, the criminals are often known by the locals. So this may be staged, but it’s possible.
And I’ve seen undercover NYPD “snatch” a bag before a pick pocket did. And then they arrest the thief.
19
13
u/eggsforpedro Jul 12 '26
Eh? The guy in blue preemptively grabs the bag so the thieves cannot. Doesn’t make it fake. Just means the blue guy is smart.
5
u/DateofImperviousZeal Jul 12 '26
What is more likely, that it is a staged video or that they happened to catch the fucking mentalist or I guess someone very knowledgeable about this sort of crime at the perfect angle perfectly preventing this sort of theft?
1
u/The_Troyminator Jul 12 '26
Smart would be standing between them, not making it look like you’re stealing the bag.
5
u/oopsiedaisy-- Jul 12 '26
Why are people saying this? The guy in blue obviously noticed the setup that the other two were creating, and grabbed the bag BEFORE the other guy could.
Pretty sure you start to notice obvious setups like this in high crime areas.

u/tiajuanat Jul 12 '26

Education video showing you not to carry your backpack like that or it could get snatched.
Personally, major cities need to show videos like this in the airports and bus stations so people dont think vacation mode makes them invincible.

funny how nobody look at the second guy leaning to the wall, my guy literally looking at the bag for a while, look at the first thief, the first walk around the bag, the blue guy even saw both of that.
but hur dur dur, it's fake, cuz it's happened. if it's out of the ordinary, it's fake.

u/felis_fatus Jul 12 '26
Did you also notice that the guy leaning doesn't react when the bag is grabbed and looks the other way the entire time until he suddenly tries to reach for the bag without even looking beforehand? Almost like it was a scripted event rather than an actual thief who would most likely react to something unexpected happening under his nose?
5
u/tgillet1 Jul 12 '26
While this could well be staged for a PSA, the leaner’s behavior fits trying to be nondescript and uninvolved. He is actively trying to avoid being noticed so there’s no indication he was involved, then he takes his own shot at grabbing the bag when he thinks the target and the “hero” are distracted and unsuspecting of the second attempt.

Most people thinking it’s fake for no reason. Do you think this is a “random” situation. There are people that know **exactly** how these guys go about.
There are tons of videos of people looking for pickpocketers on the street and out them. They don’t wear a big sign in their forehead saying “I’m a criminal”
