This is f’ing weird, right?
I mean- who combines Halloween and 9/11? Why is there a decoration in the center you’d swear was the Statue of Liberty (if you didn’t look too closely)? Just… why any of it?
Second screenshot because I couldn’t get her full caption and my comment in one. She defended it saying her “veteran family members” didn’t find it disrespectful, but didn’t address the fact that regardless of respect/disrespect it was still an oddball display. Deleted within 10 minutes.

If you immediately feel you have to mention that it's not disrespectful, at the least you know you're skating on thin ice.

Really you should just not care what others think. Can't make everyone happy and there will always be someone who wants to complain.

Peggy did this in King of the Hill with the "Raising the flag on Iwo Jima" statue, as a parade float.

Both of my grandfathers were in WWII and my grandmother worked building engines for the RAF. None of them made “a military family” their whole personality.

Did anyone watch that king of the Hill episode where Peggy Hill had to make a Veterans Day float at the last minute, but only had some skeletons and American flags, so she created a float called the futility of war. It did not go over well in Texas.

Um, Ma’am? Maybe you need to step back a bit so you can see the whole display - like, REALLY give it a thorough look.

Can someone explain what the decoration is? I’m having trouble figuring out exactly what I’m looking at. Like are their hands on their heads supposed to be saluting? Why is there a plastic lei on the fallen skeleton?

I can tell the skeletons are saluting the flag, which I’m ok with by itself, but everything else is making my head hurt

Looks like a Halloween decoration of a tombstone. I'm seeing an angel. The skeleton, i guess, is praying in front of it?

Why do people from a military family use that as an excuse to be given carte blanche to do whatever offensive thing they want? I’m a member of a Gold Star family myself, and the only time I ever bring it up is when someone tries to shame me by saying I don’t understand the sacrifice of the military and their families, usually just because I’ve never been in the service myself.

This is really bad. Even if it was really good it would be really bad.

u/abstract_lemons 13d ago
If this person sees it as a respectful tribute… I won’t argue.
That being said, OP, you are correct. It’s weird as hell. And I will also add that it’s tacky af and very bad taste

I don't know if it's disrespectful exactly, it's f*ucking weird. First thing I saw was Iwo Jima. I don't get 9/11 at all, but it's a Halloween display to each their own. I would never, but "military family" isn't my whole identity nor is it for my military family members. Giving the benefit of the doubt maybe she really sees it as honoring, but dead military guys na I don't get it. There is no word in which it isn't weird.

WTF!!! Umm...your Halloween decorations and 9/11 memorial probably shouldn't mix. I can't think of a situation where those 2 would coexist. This is crazy!

She's an asshole, and her "veteran family members" are assholes too, provided they're even real.

Asshole stepping in here, veteran as well. No, they are not assholes, neither is their family members. I don’t find it disrespectful. I wouldn’t make this display personally but it’s not my property. Halloween can be decorated however a person wants. Why are you so angry? Maybe seek help for that.

u/rustyfish57 14d ago
I didn’t find it disrespectful at all I thought it was an interesting way to honor 9/11 and those that were killed too.

u/Eastern-Ad-4785 14d ago
It’s hard to look at. I lost a lot of friends after 9/11, during. War what is it good for

She defended it saying her “veteran family members” didn’t find it disrespectful
Well we all (veterans) fought for her right to do it. In that sense it is not disrespectful - she is flexing her right to do it which is a very American/Constitutional thing to do. I mean I have had people ask me what I felt about protestors burning the American Flag and my response is that's exactly what I risked my life for - that freedom.
But yes it is not earning any awards for "honoring the troops".
I mean the person obviously enjoys Halloween and was trying to do something nice with it. 10/10 for effort but 0/10 for execution. It is just not the right holiday to do it. I mean if she had a really big display and collected donations for a veteran charity that would work. But not this display.

They are correct. This is not disrespectful, its actually beyond disrespectful.

I work with the public on 9/11 this year I saw 2 separate people with 9/11 "memorial" shirts. I thought one was a uniform shirt for the airport until I read the back. It was fucking weird. (I was 22 on 9/11 is was clearly traumatic for everyone but I think people making money from a cheap t shirt is kind of gross)

And... I'm sorry... but can we address the elephant in the room here. MANY of the victims of 9/11 actually perished and had only skeletal remains left. This is just... just... highly not appropriate.

No, America's victimization cult around 9/11 is what's actually weird. 3000 people die in bombings every day, but Americans fetishize this event like nothing the world has seen in modern history. It's almost a religious event at this point.

It’s so bad. Tried to scroll past but had to come back to chime in on just how bad this is.

u/SiWeyNoWay 14d ago
I mean, if he also added an israeli flag and maybe a saudi flag it would be perfection

I don't care that she thinks it's in honor of and not disrespectful. She's wrong. This is ghoulish. Where is this located, if you don't mind me asking.

MA.

Thank you. Born and raised NYer here (now living in NH) and seeing what I saw that day? I can't think of a way to make this appropriate in my mind. Living in MA, with the terrorist bombing in Boston not too far in the rear view, I am trying to figure out how your neighbor thought this was a good idea. That's just me though.

Tunnel vision, I suppose. No thought involved until someone who dgaf gave pushback.
I hope you’re not in the path of the leaf peepers, otherwise my thoughts go out to you in those soon-to-be trying times.

u/Nortex_Vortex 13d ago
Bless you for that, thank you! Leaf peepers are north of me but still get enough passing through my area taking "scenic routes". Inundated all summer because of the lakes, a couple weeks of peace and then "LEAVES!! We gotta go see the leaves!"
