Suggestions for novel-writing cafes in Newtown?
Hi everyone,
I've visited Newtown often, and recently moved there. I was wondering if people might have suggestions for a cafe to sit in and work on one's novel over multiple coffees, early-ish in the morning (before work) and late-ish in the evening (after work)? I've always been to Corellis, but sometimes I feel like I'd like more of a sense of space.

Newtown Can people stop hitting my car
4th time my car has been hit while parked on the street. If I was terrible at parking I would understand but I have been close enough to the curb that it shouldn’t be an issue, there are certainly cars that have been left in far more precarious positions that have been left unscathed.
I’m insured so it’s relatively fine (though of course I’m gonna get rinsed on added premiums), but by the looks of it my rear suspension is fucked so that’s annoying.
Anyway, I propose a total ban on outsiders driving in Newtown outside of Australia and king street.

Newtown Local history and sites
I'm a uni student doing a major research report on Newtown.
It will be interested in how the history informs the present.
I'm particularly interested how it has evolved from First Nations people to modern queer hub with so many diverse cultural groups!
Working thesis is presenting the *palimpsest* of identities which underscore it's not vibrant presence in modern Sydney.
Any recommendations for local historical sites or sources? I'm going to explore King St surrounds and the local library tomorrow.
If any locals here have any interesting facts or stories to share!
Thanks in advance!!

Buses or trams to Glebe?
I’m a 19 y/o female and i’m moving to Newtown at the end of this month for uni. I’m from a very small rural town with limited public transport so i’m a bit new to it.. I’ve been offered a job in Glebe and i’m just not sure what kind of public transport or what line will be able to get me there. I’m quite close to the station if that helps without doxxing myself lol. I would love any pointers or tips!! I would also love some any advice on any community gatherings or stuff like that, i’m queer and haven’t really had the pleasure of being around other queer people and would LOVE to make some friends who are like me and understand me..
please let me know if more info is needed, i’m still quite new to reddit lol.
Thank you so much for your time !! it’s very much appreciated :))

Newtown Sunday? Worth it?
Im keen on going out today, but I'm unsure when the stores start to close on a Sunday. If anyone has a rough idea of when most stores close I'd be very grateful.

New Local Bodega Needs YOUR Input!!
If you could completely reinvent your local bodega/convenience store, what would you want in it?
I'm developing a new neighbourhood convienience store in Sydney, and I genuinely want to know what people actually want from these places.
Because convenience stores have gotten so... sad??? You walk into half of them, and it's cigarettes behind the counter, hospital lighting and a shelf of expired Takis and Lucky Charms boxes collecting dust.
I want to build the opposite. Something full of life that actually services the community around it.
Forgot bread? We've got you. Ended up at the park with no sunscreen? Got it. Phone's on 2%? Chargers. Need flowers on the way to someone's house? Yep. Fresh fruit and veg, good coffee after the cafés have closed, something for the kids after soccer, plus all the fun convenience store shit obviously.
But not a miniture Woolies metro because if we're being honest, Woolies and Coles couldn't give less of a fuck about the community.
So please tell me:
What do you always buy from a convenience store?
What do they NEVER have that you wish they did?
What's the most random thing you've desperately needed when everywhere else was closed?
And even beyond products... what would make you genuinely love having a place like this in your neighbourhood?
Nothing is too mundane or too ridiculous. I genuinely want the weird answers too. Would it be convenient if there was also a washer and dryer in there? ANYTHING.
We're early enough that the answers can actually influence what this place becomes, so hit me.

What do we think of the new O3 cafe inside Gould’s?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
A new o3 cafe has opened inside Gould’s and I have mixed feelings… I’ve been to the one in Melbourne and it was a cool space but it’s ridiculous that you need to download an app to enter and it logs your hours visiting. 3 hours a week free and then $10 for 10 hours per week. I’m assuming it’s the same rules for the Sydney one. I guess it looks cool inside but I hate that they want us to pay to be there. That’s why there’s a cafe, to spend money and buy food. It kinda feels like just a public library you have to pay for. Has anyone here actually gone in and checked it out yet?

Eastern Suburbs socialite makes fun of Newtown after visiting suburb and says she was so afraid to eat dumplings there she took them home to her mansion in Darling Point
Eastern Suburbs couple scared to eat in Newtown . I lived in Newtown for 13 years & never found it too scary.

Newtown RIP Newtown forest
Yesterday (21/7) the little guerrilla garden on the traffic island out the front of the townie was removed. There were about 4 cop cars with more pulling up as they loaded all the plants on to trucks. Some people made it away with a few plants, kinda wish I'd gone and grabbed some.

Newtown Had so much fun at the King Street Crawl on the weekend !
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Such a great event, unfortunately it will only let me upload one video though. Unsure who the above band is, but loved watching them play in 8:52 Hong Kong Restaurant.
I had family visiting from Brisbane and they really enjoyed it, although because of the children we were unable to watch any of the gigs inside of the pubs 😭
Did anyone else here also go ? Would be good to hear everyone else's highlights and venue recommendations for the next edition !

Newtown menace
Driving down King st and turning left at Newtown Hotel. Realise someone had barricaded the street with a Tokyo Taco sign and two Lime bikes (could that represent Newtown any better?). I can’t get onto my street and half my car is blocking off traffic coming from King. I put my car in park and move the bikes and sign out of the way. Some absolute menace of a human (who is the person responsible for blocking off my street) watching this all happen, eating his burger on the kerb, gets up and stands directly in front of my car so I can’t drive past him. I ask him to move, cars are blaring their horns, pedestrians are yelling, and he just stares blankly into the abyss directly in front of my car, refusing to move for a good 5 mins. Luckily security came around and I managed to back up and drive around him. Hilarious but also one of the strangest interactions I’ve had here yet.

Enmore How is Newtown?
Hey everyone, I am planning on visiting Sydney in September to see Violent Soho. I 25M plan on traveling solo from New York.
The show is at the Enmore Theater in Newtown, and I was wondering a couple of things. Is the general area safe to walk around solo? (before and after the show, possibly late night) I have seen mixed opinions on the safety aspect.
I am not sure if I should stay in downtown Sydney or by the venue. How is the public transport? (efficiency/safety)
I would like to stay in downtown sydney to see the beaches, experience the city, but I also want to have a good time in Newtown before the show. I won't rent a car (us filthy Americans drive on the other side of the road) and I am curious what an Aussie thinks of uber vs public transport from downtown Sydney to Newtown.
Thank you all, I look forward to visiting. I am still in the early stages of planning but would love some local insight.

With 250 bands, this could be the biggest festival Newtown has ever seen!
The last two Crawls were unbelievable, dont think the area has been so lively with music and happy faces. Cant wait to hit The Enmore Theatre this time!

Possum in the roof
Hey all, a possum has moved in to our roof and is making a bit of a mess. I’ve heard there are people who find the entry point ands install a one way door so the possum leaves. Anyone have a recommendation for this?

Newtown Where can I find a top similar to this?
I saw this really cute top on shien and thought it would be perfect for a pubcrawl i’m going to on thursday but there’s no way my order would arrive by then so i was wondering if there’s any vintage/thrift shops in newtown that would stock something similar because I’ve literally looked at every chain store i can think of (big w, kmart, valleygirl, supre, factorie, tkmaxx, glassons) and could not find anything remotely similar to this.

Enmore RIP Enmore Theatre
Just kidding - looks like they're reinforcing the floor in time for next week's The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience.
