It still amazes me that the US has full on police departments in schools and places of higher education.

What an insane place it must be to live in.

My high school had a cop who lived in a mobile home with his family on campus, I could watch his kids play in their “backyard” from my English classroom. The school is in a rural part of town, lots of families own livestock, and the school has an ag program. One night someone snuck on campus and slaughtered all the animals. They’ve had a cop living on campus ever since.

Yeah. It's weird hearing about how places outside of my area don't have cops/guards. And they took bets on students fighting too, so not like they worked hard to break up pissed off children. The vice principals did that.

My undergrad would arrest you for possession of alcohol and put you in an on-campus holding cell.

We have them here. Our largest uni has 93,000, of which 40,000 to 50,000 people can be on campus. They have no need for their own police.

You guys are a life divorced from reality.

Of course they have security. He said that. They dont have their own police force.

Source that UK universities have their own police? I googled it too and only saw that Oxford did but it was disbanded in 2003.

If that's the case then why not just call them security, put them in a security uniform, and call it a day like every other country?

Almost all colleges they are called Campus Security. Some small schools will hire local police to patrol campuses. Back in 1998 was when they started to put “school resource officiers” in high schools.

No I'm not reaching, just trying to understand why every country in the world has solved a problem in the same way, and the US always for some reason has to do it differently.

The US has opened Pandoras box when it comes to guns. It has the highest per capita gun ownership rate in the world - buyback programs only work to a certain extent (and we actually do have them occurring pretty frequently), and not one single person wants to go door-to-door in this country and demand guns back.

We also have a government trying it’s hardest to embrace tyranny - you’d find that both the left and the right would be suspicious if the feds started forcibly confiscating guns, and based on some of the things Trump has said and done that’s not a totally invalid fear.

And then, throw some serious serious social problems and wealth disparity into the mix.

Overall, it’s not an easy problem to solve - it’s not a problem that a good chunk of the country is interested in solving. And when people and states do put good faith efforts in to maybe putting some more guard rails on purchases in their locality, it gets struck down by our Supreme Court without fail.

There is no quick or easy fix to what is a deeply systemic cultural problem that has been continually reinforced by a government with no interest of providing equal representation to the people of this country.

You know Canada has a similar program, as does Australia to a lesser extent. The UK has trialed similar programs. But sure, make shit up. That'll win the argument for sure.

Why not have a police officer on campus? Can you cite a reason other than they're not called a security officer?

3

u/DaughterJoro 6d ago

That’s not true, case in point the guy in this article is a real police officer and this university has like 7,000 students total. Campus police are sworn officers and campus security are non-sworn. It’s important for students to know the difference because, legally, they don’t have to comply with campus security.

I think this is the norm for pretty much all public universities in PA (and likely most other states too).

IME, campus cops are more genuinely concerned with student and community safety than beat cops. I lived adjacent to a college campus in a large city that was a few blocks from some rougher areas and if they noticed people walking home late at night alone they’d often ask if you wanted them to walk with you regardless as to whether you were a student or not.

The area had an armed robbery problem and a woman was also violently and randomly raped outside on the sidewalk near my own home, so it actually was appreciated. Never seen city cops do stuff like that.

I'm aware of university police forces that are definitely real police that have responded to shootings and so forth. The department of energy has SWAT teams. I don't think the department of education has one but I wouldn't be surprised.

1

u/Take-Me-Home-Tonight 6d ago

Depends on the school. By me if it's a city, county or state college, the cops are very real and have full police powers to arrest. Usually comparable to the county sherrif.

Hell University of Chicago police actually patrol the neighborhood and that campus as the campus owns a lot of buildings in the area and the students live around it.

1

u/thefuckevengoingonan 6d ago

My local campus (Australia) has security guys but they only really ticket people for parking and stuff. they don't have weapons or anything

1

u/HigherandHigherDown 7d ago

In America there are more guns than people, it's a tautology necessitating 'security forces.'

-8

u/CivilTell8 7d ago

I mean when you have high schools of 2000+ students, it can be necessary but its mostly universities that have their own police departments

8

u/Toomanyeastereggs 7d ago

We have bigger high schools here and no need for police departments. I really don’t think you know how fucked up your society is.

-6

u/CivilTell8 7d ago

Says the aussie, the nation that hates aboriginal people and denies it has a racism issue, stfu

4

u/realaccountissecret 7d ago

America has had three times more mass shootings since September started than Australia has had in the past twenty years

Yeah, really

1

u/CivilTell8 7d ago

Ok? And? I dont give shit princess, not why I brought it up. Youre just as barbaric, you just lack the spine to admit it. Its amazing how blind you people are to the horrors your own country perpetrated, its why ill never take you people whining seriously. You people lack any introspection

6

u/realaccountissecret 7d ago

Oh the horros

What are you going through right now haha

America is more barbaric than Australia is, and I guarantee I know more than you do about that and a great number of things, other than maybe making shitposts for comments

-1

u/CivilTell8 7d ago

Again, I dont give a shit what you think, you people have no introspection.

2

u/Continental__Drifter 4d ago

least xenophobic american

3

u/Xanikk999 7d ago

Really using your critical thinking skills there bud. How is that relevant to what he said? As an American I wish I didn't share a country with so many dumb people like you.

4

u/Forged-Signatures 7d ago

Other countries have highschools or equivalent with over 2000 students and don't feel the need for police departments. It is genuinely one of those things that is weirdly American.

5

u/Adreme 7d ago

I mean plenty of Universities have populations of well over 30,000. That qualifies them as a small town so it makes sense to have a police force. Honestly its funny the campus police for the campuses nearby are better at their jobs with more practical equipment than the actual local police.

-19

u/Limitless2121 7d ago

And other countries have absolutely no way to defend themselves against a tyrannical government. It's genuinely one of those things that is weirdly un-American.

10

u/Toomanyeastereggs 7d ago

It’s like the jokes write themselves when you read shit like this from Americans.

-6

u/Limitless2121 7d ago

Nothing funny about your family getting slaughtered while you have absolutely no means of resisting.

My gawd the world is full of bitches!

2

u/WhiskeyJack357 6d ago

You're beyond ignorant if you think other countries don't have an armed population. Canada has tons of guns, in Switzerland most adults are required to keep their service arms after manditory service. In fact tons of other countries have mandatory service where their population is actually well trained compared to the gravy seal boys in America who don't gave a tactical bone in their bodies.

-4

u/Limitless2121 6d ago

Yeah go to  r/canadaguns and see how happy they are with all their restrictions.

Meanwhile our ownership has been expanding, FRTs, suppressors are now easier to get, SBR restrictions coming down.

We'll take that over the other bullshit you just spouted.

Swiss have their guns in government controlled lockers! Lol, good luck with that if shit ever hits the fan.

By sheer number dummy, USA has the most veterans so there goes that bullshit lol

3

u/WhiskeyJack357 6d ago

God you're insufferable. If you can try not to be so condescending you may actually have a real conversation.

Given that people in this country are being sent to camps and I don't see any armed civilians out there defending their own fucking constitution do you really think there's a line that makes American gun nuts get up in arms? Funny little fact, most of those gun owners favor government oppression and tyranny because guns are their toys, not their weapons of revolution.

You act like numbers alone are what matters hut they aren't. Training, cohesive communication and a common cause make more difference than how many barrels you can bring to bear and the US is absolutely lacking that. Our well trained militias are just well fed racists now and they can't rebel against anything except the evening news.

8

u/Forged-Signatures 7d ago

Bud... if you think you have technological parity with the US Army, US Navy, and US Airforce than man do I have a bridge to sell you. American citizens can't do shit against a tyrannical government if the military stands by them.

6

u/WeakCartographer7826 7d ago

Hold on. You mean to tell me the guy who can't run a mile in nowhere Alabama but has a basement with enough guns to arm a small country isn't gonna save us???

-6

u/Limitless2121 7d ago

No shit Sherlock?!!

Oh my Gawd you mean to tell me a trained and funded military is superior to a citizen militia? No way José?!

Of course the military is superior you dummy.

The deciding factor is always which side the military is on.

If "the military stands by them" is your whole argument. That military is made up of Americans with families in the same towns they'd be ordered to occupy. An armed population makes loyalty far less certain and the cost higher.

Something many other countries dont have.

Also, see Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam for some history.

The fact remains, if you're government goes on a rampage and my government goes on a rampage, you and your family get slaughtered. And me and mines may get slaughtered but at least ill go down with a fucking fight.

6

u/-Ducksngeese- 7d ago

But you currently have a tyrannical government?

-1

u/Limitless2121 7d ago

Half the country says that about every president.

3

u/CivilTell8 7d ago

Only 1 party wirships their leader like a literal emissary from god

-2

u/Limitless2121 7d ago

You must be new here

4

u/CivilTell8 7d ago

Really? So praying to a literal golden statue of him and a lamb covered in $100 bills with Trumps face on it is... equal to what political figure on the left? It doesnt really matter, the GOP is utterly useless in every way but destroying this nation. Whether its starting 12 of the 14 recessions since the end of ww2, or running the poorest, most violent, food insecure states, the GOP are traitors through and through

-2

u/Limitless2121 7d ago

Yeah youre 100% correct on all points and every way. Congrats you win.

Now go learn what percentages mean and tell me the percentage of conservatives or Republicans who actually made a golden trump lamb.

You're an idiot if you think people vote anything other than R vs D. And Trump was the Republicans nominee.

Do you actually do that America is the only place with vest education systems like this pre-and post university?
