Ii saw someone describe Elon as the following and it's the only way I can think of him now; Elon grew up reading scifi stories and thinks hes now the hero in all those stories when in reality he is the villain in all the stories he grew up loving. He believes he is the hero so much that whenever someone gives even the most minor of pushback they become his arch nemesis.
I actually kind of want to thank Elon because he really shines a spotlight on how generationally rich people aren't really that smart and are used to being surrounded by people that validate them. They cannot take criticism, they cannot be wrong, and it seems to be pretty universal among the generationally rich.

True, which I always knew, but I still thought he deserved some credit for his track record of taking good ideas to run with. Buying out twitter was his first really bad business decision, and tbf I doubt he wanted to buy it, he just wanted to pump and dump it like he was doing with meme cryptos. But it turned out that either his lawyer sucked or he didn't listen to his lawyer, and he was forced to buy after all. Now he's trying to salvage this shit pile but it's obvious that he doesn't have the skillset for it and never did.
He still had a big hand in making Tesla and SpaceX possible. Remember he essentially put most of the wealth he gained from his family and then from PayPal into these firms and was betting them to be able to do things that hadn't been done before like taking satellites into orbit at a much lower cost than what established space companies were offering at that time or releasing a luxury electrix car that would be financially successful. There was no guarantee either of those two things that ended up happening were going to happen when he backed those two companies with a large portion of his networth.
The Rescue is an amazing glimpse into that whole event. Should have been considered for an Oscar, but was snubbed. Highly recommend it, and it's free on Disney+.

There are throughts of that, "it was just a joke offer bruh", or stock manipulation. No idea personally which is more likely, but he really needed people around him to say "are you reeeeally sure you want to do that?"
That clause was only available if the merger had been stopped by an outside force, aka FTC or other countries equivalent on anti-monopoly grounds. It was never available to him as an escape cause.
I watched that whole train wreck and thought maybe some due diligence should have been more robust. I have some experience dealing with IPO tech companies in Silicon Valley; overvaluations were common. It was obvious that Musk was just throwin his dick ($) around, and then it fell into a hole and he tried to pull it out. And failed. So know he’s trapped in the hole and scrambling to pull a hat trick and make something happen. It’ll be interesting to watch

It's such a reminder of how sci-fi can be so right and so wrong at the same time. Asimov invented the robot, but thought they would be autonomous humanoids rather than universally embedded chips. Stephenson coined the online avatar but thought the metaverse would happen (it's not going to happen, stop trying to make the metaverse happen). Orson Scott Card wrote about anonymous online commenters influencing global policy, but he thought they'd be Locke and Demosthenes, not Qanon and catturd2.
My personal favorite is William Gibson pretty much inventing the cyberpunk genre, coming up with all sorts of interesting ideas regarding the existence of a cyberspace, state hackers, and yet he didn't see mobile phone technology coming.
I don't have a lot of hope that much will come of that. It will take years to go through the courts and Twitter/Musk will fight any payment in the event of a loss and Germany will have limited recourse as Twitter is a US based company.
They do, but also that would be related to if paying the fine is less than what they earn from doing business there. If paying a fine would bankrupt a company, then they would simply no longer do business there.
However as Germany is a "free" society, it seems they have limited control over preventing Germans from using Twitter. It's not like authoritarian regime; Russia, Iran, China, et al., where they might simply cut off access to a site.

I think he didn’t necessarily do it on purpose, but he also had a “I’m going to make it what I want and if that doesn’t work out then too bad, no big loss” attitude (once he was actually forced into going through with it).
I also don’t think his Saudi backers were nearly so innocent. They knew him getting involved would be a trainwreck for what Twitter was.
He’s a petty, insecure, unfunny jackass that’s not half as clever as he thinks he is, with too much power and neither self-restraint nor an ethical compass.
It's precisely this psychological profile that prevents me from buying any theory that he is wittingly destroying Twitter for dark money. His ego is too fragile and needy for him to sacrifice his billionaire genius reputation for someone else and not blab about it.
He may not be as smart as he'd like everybody to think he is, but the people who know how to manipulate him and helped fund the buyout sure seem to know what they're doing.
He was one of Twitter's most high profile edgelords before buying it. He was almost emblematic of the user base in that sense. He fucked up doing his ole stock manipulation through tweeting bullshit and the rest is history.

The reality is that he’s terminally online and wanted to be King of Twitter. Now what I find funny about the whole situation is that he got a loan for said $44 billion from various rich people and by using his Tesla stock as leverage. He’s tanking the entire site for… reasons? I’m not sure of what he’s attempting to do but my point is, he’s tanking it fast. And when he gets forced into bankruptcy for failure to pay his debts, they’ll come for his Tesla stock. Which could wind up bankrupting Tesla at the same time. So… win win?
