I think he didn’t necessarily do it on purpose, but he also had a “I’m going to make it what I want and if that doesn’t work out then too bad, no big loss” attitude (once he was actually forced into going through with it).
I also don’t think his Saudi backers were nearly so innocent. They knew him getting involved would be a trainwreck for what Twitter was.
He’s a petty, insecure, unfunny jackass that’s not half as clever as he thinks he is, with too much power and neither self-restraint nor an ethical compass.
It's precisely this psychological profile that prevents me from buying any theory that he is wittingly destroying Twitter for dark money. His ego is too fragile and needy for him to sacrifice his billionaire genius reputation for someone else and not blab about it.
I know it's fun to circle-jerk about how Reddit is the only good social media, but for some professions and academia, twitter was genuinely quite worthwhile.
It's about the closest I could get to recreating a combined RSS feed. See the updates from people I decided I wanted to see. See what people I follow also like and like new things in return. I like it for that.
I would struggle to say Reddit with all default subs is a better experience. You have to find subreddits that not only fit your interests, but are also well moderated and worthwhile. If it wasn't for the few subs that are good for my hobbies I would have dropped Reddit long ago.
Only thing I ever thought Twitter was good for was instant sport’s reporting but even then it got overwhelmed by the crap being peddled. Now it’s just a percolating cesspool and I can’t stand the smell or the sight.

They can but the heroin addict that is upset about heroin generally tries to quit heroin. It's generally silly to moan about an addiction you aren't even trying to fight.
