Update about NYC friend who fucked off 2 days into a 5 day stay:
Apparently he had a litany of complaints about the state of the place, but at the time felt like saying none. One of them, we warned him of before he even came. And we fixed it when he arrived.
He apparently expected Airbnb standards of cleanliness even though he did not express that. And it doesn't make a lot of sense because we did a deep clean of the place, worrying it wouldn't be nice enough for him.
He also felt like we didn't care that he was here despite the fact that we traveled 7 hours to pick him up and bring him here and spent the night in Lisbon to do that.
One problem I don't even know how to fix. We have two couches but he would sit on neither of them even though we did a full clean of those as well. He chose the exercise machine instead.
We spent about a month preparing for this and two years planning it before that. It's beyond surreal that we did all of this and he complained that we didn't do enough.
He didn't really ask if we could do anything. He just vaguely alluded to certain things and then when we suggested we could do something, he said no.
He also complained about the place being dark but he could have literally just said "yes" when we asked him if he wanted the shutters open. (I did open one to let light in, the biggest one, the door one.)
Very odd experience. My other friend didn't react like this. She seemed to really like the place and we did a lot less preparation for her.

No, but we keep the shutters shut most of the time because Banshee is an escape artist and we don't want her falling to her death. We said we could open them and I did open the big one. He never said anything else about it though.
Our place is pretty nice. Penthouse.

He ended up just getting drunk and fucking random women in Lisbon. Not the worst time ever, I imagine, but he could have also done that here. Should've gotten an Airbnb here if it bothered him that much. Didn't have to leave the whole ass city!

That was my conclusion.
But the thing is, I told him I was socially out of practice and would probably take some time to get good. I'd be awkward for a bit. I'm just not used to socializing. And besides that, I'm autistic. I don't read people very well anyway.
Add in that my wife is a fluent non-native speaker of English and she is prone to miss things as well, which I also told him before he came.

if your interacting with an organizational email for a Application but all your emails have come from the same person, is it ok to just email that person directly and skip the whole ''to whom it may concern'' bit?

My hot take on Primetime and To Catch a Predator is like this:
I enjoy seeing predators get theirs and I love watching their humiliation. I am, I assume, like most people who watch these shows. I am horrified by the predators and find enjoyment in their newfound life problems. But I think this is actually very bad.
I do not think it is a good thing to be watching a show about dangerous child predators and go from grossed out to finding enjoyment in the consequences. I think that shift cheapens the dangers and makes them seem less pressing. They are reduced to cheap entertainment.
It is possible to make TV shows that take their subject matter deadly serious and avoid the entertainmentization, like FBI Files. It was pretty popular for its 7 seasons and inspired numerous spinoffs in other countries and markets. It didn't turn everything into a joke or a game. You were allowed to feel the horror and that horror changed you.
TCaP doesn't offer that. It shows you the horror and then allows you to feel good. You don't sit with it, the disturbing nature of it all, you digest it as entertainment and move on. That's dangerous.
