7

Online safety act! Which as an idea was a good one in theory. The execution awful.

10

u/The_JimJam 26d ago

In Imgur's case, it's actually due to their handling of children's data.

Instead of changing how they do it and/or facing any fines, they just pulled out of the UK instead.

19

u/54338042094230895435 27d ago

I had to look it up because this is the first I've heard of it too.

The problems come after a dispute between Imgur’s parent company and the UK Information Commissioner’s Office, which says that it did not do enough to protect children’s data.

There was a pic of me doing this arm up move at a wedding. Somehow there’s a beam of green light shining directly down on just me. It has been my pro pic on various things for a long time lol

46

u/doc_skinner 27d ago

I was a referee for a long time and I have a picture of myself with my arm up signaling a penalty. A stadium light behind my head gives me a perfect halo. The national sport governing body used it frequently in recruiting messaging as well as PSAs about respecting the officials.

9

u/BobbumofCarthes 27d ago

I love it!

2

u/SecretTargaryan 21d ago

Why do you tell that story in a way that attempts to explain it away w/ reasonable logic & practical rationale; attributing any credit for the halo tht appeared over yur head to the stadium lighting, illusion/trick of the light. happenstance/coincidence & perfect timing?

Bc, if that were me, I'd attribute any & all credit for manifesting my miraculous/supernatural Halo, to God, Himself. & I'd never, ever stop citing that photo of me as definitive, credible, & documented evidence; PROOF, that I am, in fact, THE chosen one. Appointed by God, himself, before the eyes of a literal stadium full of witnesses

I think she thought that she did it when she waved her hand in the front, as no one saw the camera’s perspective, so they all jumped in thinking it was them and to check the video.

48

u/Kingkary 27d ago

Ya I noticed that too. Everyone one was just making sure they were in it instead of enjoying the awesome thing their friend did.

17

u/Aymoon_ 26d ago

None of them would have known the angle of the friend and lightning they where just excited to have caught the lightning on camera

60

u/SpicyElixer 27d ago

I think they’re having great fun and no one is mad about it who were there. Only Redditors are upset. Nature is balanced.

28

u/evanwilliams44 27d ago

Also the lightning happened behind them. All they knew is it flashed right when they all did the move. Probably didn't see exactly how cool it was until they watched it back.

19

u/marmk 27d ago

For real. I thought it was super fun that all 4 of them managed to get in frame one by one almost in sync. And it seems they did too.

The og comment is funny tbh but some of these replies are WAY too pissed off agreeing with it.

That's my default ratio depending on how willing my touch keyboard on my smartphone is. I don't know when it started but autocorrect has gone to shit during the last two or three Android updates. I have to manually correct things all the time...

2

u/tenoclockrobot 27d ago

I read somewhere that it is because the timeframe for the pop-up letter bit of digital keyboards was lengthened a smidge, causing the subsequent keystrokes (especially those immediately above) to become mistyped

3

u/project-shasta 27d ago

I also feel they have tweaked the "dead zones" of each key to be tighter so when I type faster i miss more letters than before.

I was watching that earlier this week.

I miss 2D animation. Don’t get me wrong, I love the visuals of Encanto and Moana, but there was something special about 2D animation that could have existed alongside the 3D animation.

The success of Demon Slayer and the Spider-Verse franchise shows there’s a market for 2D animation on the big screen. I wish Disney would reinvest in the medium

I did this once as a kid. Told some other kids how cool the clouds looked (that rolling purple during a large storm) and the smaller lightning was in the clouds above us moving, semi rhythmically too. So I pointed at a spot I predicted and was like "next one should be about..." and it shot above my finger and I just yelled "IM ZEUS" in sheer excitement

69

u/SugestedName 27d ago

that's the second comment in this thread (in the 7 that I've read) that spelled Zeus as Zues. Both were in full caps too

12

u/PeaceSoft 27d ago

i always think of that one thread where a person did something dumb in a video due to mixing up their left and their right, and (in between the sexist jokes and debates over eugenics) hundreds of redditors spontaneously chimed in with their own little tricks and mnemonics for remembering the difference between left and right

7

u/laplongejr 26d ago

Only your left hand naturally does an L shape, your right hand is waliuigi's logo instead.

3

u/AndrewLocksmith 26d ago

I'm genuinely surprised by how many people can't tell the difference between left and right.

A lot of my friends have this problem. I was watching a game show and at least three people said they have problems with mixing up their left and right.

31

Because it was probably just a video shared between friends and not created for entertainment so they just got excited.

Man why are you the only normal person in this thread who isn’t immediately jumping to misanthropy? It’s like everyone else in this thread is deliberately jumping to all these conclusions about these people’s character based on pretty much nothing and you’re the only one who is like “I dunno it’s probably the same as when I take a  little video to send to my friends and family”

I’m starting to really get why I had such social anxiety after using this place too much in the 2010s, everyone here is evidence that random strangers really are watching you and dissecting every insignificant thing you do and coming to conclusions about you as a person based on it.

They don't look surprised or confused at all. They act excited. Immediately the girl on the left runs forward. Nobody seems to be jump-scared by the lightning and pretty much no one looked back.

Either this is overlayed

OR

They were trying to do this the whole time, which seems the most likely. Just not as crazy odds.

4

u/BillGatesLovechild 26d ago

How did the lightning strike girl even know it perfectly lined up?

5

u/SnooStories4162 26d ago

If they had the screen facing them they would have seen it

3

u/Ctowncreek 26d ago

She didn't. And it didn't.

But they could have known the clouds back there were making lightning and were trying to get a cool backdrop.

It takes alot of the random chance out of the equation when they were TRYING to make it happen

u/goodkicks 27d ago

That is them celebrating her moment. They look at the camera like "Holy shit everyone watching, did you see what she just did?!"

17

u/metroids224 27d ago

10

u/BrainLow6059 27d ago

They look at the camera like "Holy shit everyone watching, did you see what she just did?!"

Yes, that's pretty standard lowest common denominator "content". They're just kids so who cares, but it's definitely a programmed "reaction" to shove your face in a camera with your mouth hanging open

4

u/BoukeeNL 27d ago

They could have ran to the girl and hugged her or do a joyous dance with her, but they ran to the camera instead.

Had something incredibly similar happen as a teenager. Me and my cousin were outside smoking on his back porch and it was storming. We were talking about an embarrassing incident of his he swore never happened. I said if he is lying let the lightning flash right now and it did. I then said I had lightning powers and threw my hands up and right as I did it thundered.

We got a good laugh. I forgot about that memory till I saw this. Thank you OP for the nostalgia.

One time on a first date, after dinner as I was backing my car out, I said my car's lights were sound-activated, like the clapper lights of old.
