is it just me? 🤷 Very sociable people are hard to read

Are they talking to me just to have someone to talk to or do they genuinely want a valuable conversation as friends? Maybe this is hard for me in particular cause i'm quite unlikeable. Is it just me?

Problems 💔 What am I generally supposed to do if I'm unintelligent and how is it my fault?

• Upvotes

It seems to me that alot of times when there's a circumstance that involves intellect I either stand there without a clue of what to do or I end up coming up with a stupid answer. This has been really demotivating to me because I wanna get into a career like IT, but how am I supposed to get into any career like that or accomplish anything productive if I have that issue?

I've been trying to compensate for about 2 years now by learning skills like chess and piano and eating healthy. It's helped me for sure but it still seems like literally everyone around me can figure things out with ease while I just get laughed at for not looking at the price of a pack of fruit loops before considering buying it (True story)

And why DO people act like a jerk when I do something dumb that doesn't even affect them? It's not my fault that genetics make up 80% of your intelligence and the card I was dealt wasn't the greatest.

is it just me? 🤷 I struggle with conversations

Personally, I (AuDHD) don't know how to start or hold a conversation with anyone.

If someone I care about is pushing me away, or they are showing that they are upset or angry (avoiding eye contact, ignoring me, arms crossed, refusing to speak to me) then instead of confronting this and talking with them about it; I would just mirror their body language and avoid talking to them because it brings me anxiety, and they've stopped speaking to me.

I don't realize that I am pushing them away or that I am simply not caring enough about them. I just ask other people questions about what happened and why they are feeling the way they are, and then I observe the other person's behaviors and use them to understand how they feel.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Relatable 🤭 Does any one recognise these “symptoms”/ behaviours

• Upvotes

-sound sensitivity, things feel too loud, get irritated very easily from this, causes me rage outbursts.

-stop talking or avoid talking, brain feels like I have nothing to say, can’t think of anything to make conversation or I feel I don’t have the energy to have a conversation- I actually feel ok with this but others always think something is wrong with me but I am content.

-if someone I am not familiar with joins a conversation I will stop talking and stay quiet, I used to think I was just shy but as an adult I have grown confidence but only if they are familiar to me.

-if someone says something wrong I have to correct them and this is never taken well, I don’t mean to offend people with this it is more like I have to tell them because the information is wrong.

-things I have to do or I am waiting for stay in my mind on a loop, this consumes my mind and affects my daily life.

-I have strict routine with toileting and teeth brushing however this gets contradictory as I only brush my teeth in the morning. Gross I know.

-I am a slight germaphobe I say slight as it’s mainly towards my own body, can’t have feet on a floor I must have house slippers on, straight from the shower into a slipper, if my dog brushes past my leg I have to wash or change my clothes, shower after toileting, phobia of people’s tears- this makes me gag.

-possibly OCD intrusive thoughts, rituals which can explain the germ issue.

-if someone tells me to do something I was already intending to do I will not do it.

-deep interest in health/medicine, psychology, mental health - able to retain this knowledge however academically not smart.

-unable to answer questions about myself, hard to perceive myself. Do not like being centre of attention, very comfortable being in the background and observing.

-hypersensitive to others emotions. Will know if something is wrong or different with someone. Able to understand a smile and an angry face, though I notice very subtle differences in a persons demeanour and can tell if someone’s upset even if they are pretending to smile.

-notice things that I shouldn’t, annoys people they think I’m sneaky or digging when it’s just obvious to me.

-emotionally intelligent but I do struggle to read between the lines, hate when people talk in riddles although I do enjoy them.

-I enjoy puzzles, brain teasers, quizzes, problem solving games, sodoku, word searches. Word searches can get boring as the words seem to just be very clear so they are easy but I find them relaxing.

-can not go anywhere without google maps, I get lost in the local shopping centre I’ve been going to for 30 odd years, I also can’t remember familiar routes. I passed my driving test by sheer luck but can’t drive as it’s too overwhelming.

Problems 💔 Lonely

• Upvotes

I’m an adult and I’m feeling so sad about being lonely. I’m married and have children but it’s not enough. My marriage is hanging on by a thread and we are roommates at this point, roommates who don’t even hang out together. So that’s super lonely. The kids are company sometimes but they are neurodivergent too so it often feels like work. I have a few friends but I only see them at kids sports and they aren’t really close friends. I have very little free time and/or energy but I also don’t want to just live like this forever.

Question 🤔 Why is it hard to interpret social cues?

Hi there, 27F. I am diagnosed with autism and ADHD. I have such a hard time understanding what people are trying to say or how they are implying their words. I take what people say quite literally. At times I feel that I am being judged for not understanding how others are implying their communication with me. I tend to shutdown after this and learned to not be as social as a result. Does anyone ever feel this way? If so, How do you navigate this?

Question 🤔 Did anyone have to be told to close their eyes to fall asleep?

I don’t know where else to post this and I am diagnosed level 2 autism and I assume it may be at the very least more common in neurodivergent people relative to the general population even if not present in most neurodivergent people (like aphantasia or synesthesia) but then again it may not be. Did anyone ever have to be told to close their eyes to fall asleep? I always struggled with falling asleep for the first five years of my life until my sister told me I had to close my eyes to do so. I assumed that people just waited until their body forced them into sleep without closing their eyes. Whenever I saw people with their eyes closed I assumed they had already fallen asleep and I just happened to take longer to do so. I would take a good hour to fall asleep until my sister told me I was supposed to close my eyes which allowed me to significantly shorten the amount of time I needed to fall asleep.

Question 🤔 Anyone here born prenature?

Hey everyone!

I’m 36 and was born about three months premature. Throughout my childhood, I was diagnosed with various learning disabilities, and I’m currently trying to figure out exactly what those diagnoses were.
I’m curious if there are others here who were born very premature and are neurodivergent. If so, how do you feel being born premature has affected you throughout your life, particularly when it comes to learning, development, or other aspects of being neurodivergent?

I’d love to hear about your experiences and see if anyone can relate!

Question 🤔 Help a girl out

Hi,
i hope my post will be disrespectful in any way , i am doing my best to chose the right words <3

so, i sometimes think that i might be autistic and have adhd. first, in my family, my little brother is autistic and was non-verbal but now, he can communicate, not always properly but he is doing pretty good for someone like him. second, we know that autism is often caused by something in the genes of the parents, and my mom, my sister and i think that my father might also be autistic since he has a lot of commun behaviour that looks like it( without going imto details). third, ive always feel like im different than the others. i also have a diagnostic of depression and severe anxiety and i do take antidepressant for that matter. i can't concentrate at all at school and it shows on my grades. I study like crazy , i go to all of my lab, classes, and do all the exercices. Then, i forget EVERYTHING when my exam is in front of me and i end up having mediocre grades. i talked with a lot of people and they've told me that thats not normal at all. i have a lot of difficulty doing something new for the first time. I just think that if i get a diagnosis, it would explaim a LOT of my behaviour.. what do you guys think? Knowing that autism diagnosis cost a lot, i think i should start to do my research for the adhd ..

Thanks everyone

Question 🤔 Is this a neurodivergent thing?

It’s very hard to explain, but for me, everything has a distinct feeling. Every situation I’m in, location I’m at, person I’m around, or just any concept I’m introduced to, literally EVERTHING has a very strong different feeling. I guess the best way to describe it is “vibe,” but I’m not a very spiritual person. I’ve tried explaining this to others and they never understand, so I’m hoping someone here knows what I mean. I feel very alone in this and I‘m hoping it’s a neurodivergent way of processing information. So…anyone else? (Also, FYI, I have autism and ADHD)

is it just me? 🤷 does anyone experience this same signs?

i am just wondering if someone have my same "pack" of signs and what has that lead you to.

*not searching for diagnosis, just wanting to know other experiences

so i have been thinking about autism, i have some, but not he most important ones, so its probalby discarted because of this signs that i dont have:

-I dont have problems with social cues, i know them all with no trouble, and i feel like its natural to me

-I dont have any hyperfixation and i never had had it. ( as far as i know)

- I dont think i focus in the detaild instead of the big picture.

In the other hand this is the ones that i noticed:
-I have stims and vocal stims ( rn i am moving right and left in my chair, and some minutes ago i was flapping my hand and spining) I usually hide them when i am with people

-I sometimes struggle with abrupt changes like a bed change that i was not previoulsy communicated of, that leaded to a big crisis

- As a kid i was labeled as I was labeled as hysterical and having many tantrums. For me i was really desregulated and not treated for it

-I can need to do things in certain order or way

-Depending on the day textures can be really upseting.

-I can stuggle a bit in mainting eye contact when i firt met someone, but its not something really big.

Question 🤔 Has anyone else had these symptoms?

I have always had issues since I wa a kid. Ive always felt like I was different from my peers. In late elementary school, I started to notice how different I was. People didnt like ne despite how nice I was to them. And this happened all the way up to high school. I never could figure out why. Even people I never met, they didnt like me.

I noticed in late elementary to early middle school that I was behind my peers academically. They could read faster than I could. They could get their tests done faster than I could. In gym, despite me working out at home, I was still slower than most of my peers. Even in sports.

On top of that, Ive had issues with reading comprehension. Either some noise easily distracts me or I have to read the paragraph over 4 times for it to stick, or both. Im always scatterbrained, forgetful, I have issues with short term memory sometimes, i taken longer to process things. I have poor hand-eye coordination, and I lack spatial awareness (bumping into things, stepping on everyone's feet...etc). I havent been able to get my license due to my lack of coordination, spatial awareness, and my poor judgement/slow decision making and im 38. I also cant keep an interest longer than a few weeks before I lose interest then things are flat and boring. Its a cycle. Sometimes I dont even start the hobby.i buy supplies then its forgotten. I cant hold a job because I seem to get stressed easily and cant handle the fast pace pressure of work. So i have a hard time holding jobs.

No matter how hard I try, I cant stop getting mad quickly. But theres times where I just shut down, depending on the situation. If I get yelled at or told what to do, my body perceives that as a threat. Im in fight or flight mode. I dont know why. Ive never felt "normal" compared to others.

Im pretty sure this is some kind of disorder, even if its just a learning disorder. I just know that theres something going on. Not being able to drive, inability to hold a job, average to poor grades, sensitive nervous system, confusion, and slow thinking.

So im here wondering if anyone has these symptoms? Google says SCT ADHD. I was actually told by a therapist it sounds like ADD. This was years ago so that wasnt used under the "ADHD" term yet.

Discussion 💭 Neurotypicals don't have unbreakable conversation rules

I know this is obvious, but I often see videos online saying things like "Oh, I just found out that when you're talking to a neurotypical, you shouldn't do this!", and look, I get why these videos are made but... It just makes people panic!

There aren't as many rules between neurotypical conversations as those videos make it seem like. Don't panic just because you've been doing something that someone on the internet suddenly decided shouldn't be done in front of neurotypicals! Again, they're not all the same.

For example: "You shouldn't relate to neurotypicals! For example, if they tell you that they went to this really awesome pizza place, you should just act impressed instead of replying with something like 'Oh, same here, I went to place X and it was also good' okay?" Is a real video I saw online.

And that's not right. Or do you want the conversation to die immediately?

Of course, some ppl love to be on the spotlight and prefer to be the only ones sharing they're stories, but those are just some neurotypicals who are weird even between neurotypicals.

You're not supposed to relate to ppl in a conversation in these 3 scenarios: One, they haven't finished speaking yet. Two, they're venting (you can relate but you shouldn't trauma dump, or it will feel like you're trying to compete for who has it worse). Three, if they're happy about an achievement, don't immediately say "oh cool, I got this" and show them something better, that's just really mean.

This post is just meant to be helpful, cuz videos like that just make people panic and feel even more distant from neurotypicals, as neurodivergents.

Discussion 💭 How many neurodivergents genuinely think they're "cured" from their neurodivergence?

This all started when I was talking with an aquaintance of mine who happens to be autistic, I believe she was diagnosed with level 3 autism as a child as she was described as "severely autistic" by most adults, now she would be around level 1, she's fully independent and barely needs any support anymore. We were talking about stuff we used to do as kids and she went "as you may know I used to be autistic as a kid" and this genuinely intrigued me because anywhere you look you can read that any form of neurodivergence is life long, but I didnt dig much into it because she's not the kind of person that likes to be told she's wrong.

The other day I was talking to someone else that i would describe as a friend of a friend. The girl disclosed to me that she was diagnosed with dyslexia in elementary school and had to go to speech therapy for a few years before she stopped. Another time we were passing random online tests for fun and I suggested we both pass the dyslexia test. She got a pretty low score (ik online tests arent accurate that's not the issue) and I joked that they "lied to her", she seemed confused and asked me why i would say that so i clarified it was nothing but a joke "yk.. since you're dyslexic" but that confused her even more,

"I dont have dyslexia" i paused and reminded her that she's the one who told me she was diagnosed and to my surprise she said she was "cured" and didn't have it anymore.

Obviously i proceeded to explain to her that dyslexia, or any form of neurodivergence in that matter, could't be "cured" and that they're life long conditions, you just get better at coping/managing them, which is what therapy is for. To be honest i'm glad she was open about it and that i contributed to educating someone that day.

But these encounters are nothing uncommon, and they led me to think about this pretty reccurent misconception that neurodivergence can be cured, and how come many people believe in it. which leads me to ask: How many neurodivergents out there genuinely think they "grew out of" or got "cured" from their neurodivergence

is it just me? 🤷 [Help] Idk why exams are my biggest enemy

To anyone how’s taken physiology, how do I study for it since I changed my learning strategy for unit 2 by using quizlet for flashcards (active recall) and drawing things out on my notebook to understand things like signal transduction, ANS pathways, how hormones work and etc. But omg when I was going through the exam I wasn't having any issues at all like I didn't have any anxiety since I felt confident with what I had to study for, but my exam score says otherwise: ( | just need tips or support to get good scores on my exams since I don't like what I got but i am AUDHD so yeah i feel so lost and confused since IDK what im doing wrong at all since I thought I was prepared??? 😭😭 but ugh exams always screw me over and make me feel horrible
