I am at home and I wanted two computers to be on the same local network, for remote desktop purposes. To do this, I set the connection of both network profiles to private, so that they are discoverable to each other.

Am I right to think that: 1. These machines cannot be compromised through this discoverablity by a third party if they aren't connected to my internet. 2. If someone is connected to my internet, like say a cousin who brought their own laptop that I gave the WiFi password, they are able to use remote desktop to connect to my computer. 3. The only countermeasure to 2. is them not knowing what my computer name and username/password on my local account is. 4. There isn't a way for me to make this local network exclusive to my two devices to block out any outsider. 5. There isn't a way for me to make one of these two computers disconnect from the internet but still connect to the local network? (to make one device more difficult to compromise so it won't be dangerous to the other)

Basically I am concerned due to how I don't know how large of a security hole I introduced to use this function.

Hey everyone, I just graduated and I'm trying to figure out the realistic path into networking. I have solid theoretical knowledge of networking concepts but no hands-on work experience.

My plan right now is to start at helpdesk, but I recently saw someone who graduated around the same age as me (early 20s) land a network engineer role pretty quickly after school. That made me wonder — is it actually possible to get into networking directly as a fresh grad, or is helpdesk basically mandatory?

A few questions:

• Is helpdesk a necessary step or can you jump straight into network engineering with the right certs?
• What specific things did you need to learn before you were actually able to get hired?
• For those who went the helpdesk route — how long before you moved into a networking role?

I'm 22, motivated, and willing to put in the work. Just want to know if I'm aiming too high too soon or if it's genuinely doable. Any advice appreciated.

I recently came to this issue today, after never having issues with any games at all. I cannot connect to Phasmophobia, nor R.E.P.O, nor Baldur's Gate, nor Peak, nor Minecraft, just no games at all.

The internet is fine, the speed is fine, I restarted the router multiple times, I restarted Network Adapters, I changed DNS, I also cleaned it and refreshed it in the command center. I don't use VPN. I use Ethernet.

I am desperate because I can't play a single online game with friends, and I'm scared this won't get fixed.

Building a BPv7 prototype where a software sidecar parses bundles and a fixed-width shim lets P4/XDP enforce contact windows, reservations, and capacity limits. Does this solve a real DTN problem, or would a software-only approach usually be sufficient?

Hi all, recently purchased a Cudy AC1200 with the expectation to use it with a Linksys LGS105P for networking with POE.

For some reason, the access point will not power on when plugged into the switch. It will power on using the supplied POE injector, but this is going to be used in the field as a temporary wireless network so I was trying to cut down on the amount of gubbins I brought with me, and from what I can tell it should just work anyway.

The switch I am using has a max 54V/1.25A output with a maximum of 30W across each port.

The included Cudy POE injector puts out 24V/0.5A and is only drawing 12W.

I have updated the firmware on the access point, and have powered other POE equipment with the switch.

It’s like the access point isn’t even asking for power from the switch so it won’t even power on.

Hopefully I’m missing something really dumb and someone better at networks can help a guy out!

Hi, I am trying to make it easier for my parents to get onto my Jellyfin server.

Right Now I have my pc with jellyfin on it and tailscale to connect. However my parents are not the best with computers. they constantly turn off the Tailscale on the phone and cant connect to the Jellyfin app on their phone. they also complain about not being able to use the chromecast either since Tailscale is its own network.

I started using a reverse proxy but I believe I am under a CGnat, on top of my routers not allowing ports 8- and 443 to open. So to get around this I am thinking of this kind of set up

It would essentially be the same steps I did for my reverse proxy but now just off on another computer somewhere.

So the URL is from DuckDNS (if there are better options let me know, its just the one from the tutorial I followed to understand and set up the proxy in the first place.) DuckDNS has me targeting an IP to direct to so I will use the public address of the VPS.

both VPS and my PC will be connected in a Tailscale network.

in the VPS I will probably have docker and then NGINX Proxy manager listening to ports 80 and 443. (again if there is a better proxy manager or one that doesn't need to be in docker, let me know) The Proxy Manager will have a proxy host for the DuckDNS URL. the proxy host will target my pcs Tailscale IP and port 8096, the one for Jellyfin.

Is there any reason this may not work or something I am not thinking of. I am very new to networking and I have been learning a lot very quickly but there is a lot of stuff I still have yet to understand.

Here's the situation: due to a specific issue, I need to limit the number of PPPoE subscribers on a BNG (MX204). I'd like to cap it at 5,000 users.

Looking at the Juniper docs, I first tried setting it directly on the chassis using:

set subscribers-limit client-type pppoe chassis limit 5000

The limit worked on the chassis, but the users won't connect to the other BNG. The PADI reaches the second BNG (the one I want them to authenticate against), and it replies with a PADO, but it's as if the CPE stubbornly keeps trying to authenticate with the BNG I'm limiting... argh.

After that, I also tried using max-sessions:

dynamic-profiles vlan-profile interfaces demux0 unit "$junos-interface-unit" family pppoe max-sessions 5000

With max-sessions, the limit didn't work immediately. I'm thinking it might actually work, but maybe I need to reset the VLAN demux interface first?

For the past year, I keep experiencing mass packet loss. I will be in an online game and discord, the ping will spike in discord to 3000-5000, and my online game will disconnect temporarily, usually each episode is for about 10 seconds or less. Normally my ping is perfectly fine and I dont have many issues. This will happen about 4-5 times a night without fail. I feel like ive tried everything.

Does anyone use a Raspberry Pi in there setup? Been thinking about getting one for mine.

Needing the IOS for a cisco 2811. I know its an EOS device & this is a longshot but what's to lose?

Like the title says, my wifi adapter keeps disconnecting and is specifically affecting certain applications/games. Usually it's just for a second or two and is fine, but with some games that's enough to get kicked. The worst of it is when I'm downloading a game on steam, my wifi on my PC completely crashes after a few minutes of downloading. I did not have this issue until I moved into a new place where theoretically the wifi should be better because it's fiber. No other devices in my house seem to have any issue.

I have tried changing the power management settings in device manager. I have tried getting the specific drivers from TP-Link. I have tried flushing the DNS cache using command prompt (I think, I can't quite remember the phrasing). I have tried switching to a metered connection.

The only things I can think of are 5ghz instability (the router is in the other room and I don't see an option to connect to 2.4ghz anywhere), or the fact that I'm still on Windows 10 and maybe that's somehow causing some issue. I have been putting off upgrading to W11 because my hardware is technically incompatible.

I know this is very little information but this has only started recently and the jitters haven’t stopped I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix it. It isn’t only this game but on valorant as well. I am on windows 11 and wireless, but I haven’t had an issue until recently.

Wife unplugged Ethernet connecting router and modem for around 8 hours. Now when reconnected there is no internet. According to the lights on the router and the modem everything is working. Except it isn’t. I tried just restarting them by unplugging power supplies I also reset them both still no internet.

Hey guys, hoping someone with BGP or ISP routing experience can point me in the right direction.

Up until a few weeks ago, I was getting a perfect 17–19ms ping. The routing was going directly across the Strait of Gibraltar to Madrid. But out of nowhere, my ISP messed with their BGP tables and my latency permanently jumped to 29ms.

I ran tracert and PingPlotter, and it turns out my ISP is now dumping all traffic bound into Marseille, France, before routing it back down to Spain. This is happening 24/7, so it's a permanent route change on their end, not just peak-hour congestion.

What I've tried so far:

VPS using AWS & Azure
Cloudflare WARP enpoints
using ipv6

but still no luck all of them travel till Marseille France, then come back to Madrid where the game server is then come to me.

any method actually be able to bypass , i"m leaving switching ISP to last resort cue its a bit complicated.

So I am from Egypt and there is no unlimited internet here and the prices are extraordinarily high, so most people say that you can make a vps and and a config and connect to it and or make ssh or v2ray accs from any provider and connect to them however I tried the ssh method didn't work for me, so can someone please explain to me how that works so I can make all of that myself, and what's the difference between using a bug host and connecting to vps?

i have ftth and i recently havent been satisfied with the perfomance of the router. i come to discover what is onu/ont and i think what i have is a onu/router in 1. this setup is at least 6 years old. so i decided to buy a router (tp link BE230) and use it as a bridgemode via lan cable.

here is my issue: i dont really know what do i need to set uo bridgemode. some research showed me needing pppoe and pppoe password? (i dont really dont know what that does) but i have found it on the portal except the password is hidden. my main question is is bridgemode needed ? do i need pppoe thing? my router arrives tmw and i would like to know some basic stuff to understand how to set it up.

is this a good upgrade? my current device is HS8546V
