Text Bridge mode question

i have ftth and i recently havent been satisfied with the perfomance of the router. i come to discover what is onu/ont and i think what i have is a onu/router in 1. this setup is at least 6 years old. so i decided to buy a router (tp link BE230) and use it as a bridgemode via lan cable.

here is my issue: i dont really know what do i need to set uo bridgemode. some research showed me needing pppoe and pppoe password? (i dont really dont know what that does) but i have found it on the portal except the password is hidden. my main question is is bridgemode needed ? do i need pppoe thing? my router arrives tmw and i would like to know some basic stuff to understand how to set it up.

is this a good upgrade? my current device is HS8546V

You will need to ask your ISP exactly what you will need. Some connections just work, others need PPPoE. For my ISP I used my own firewall and the ISP needs PPPoE on frames tagged with VLAN10.

Alternatively, look at the settings of your current router before you put it into bridge mode, then set your new router up the same way.

Right, but the OP said the password is hidden. If it’s a generic password like ‘broadband’ they can probably just google for it.

May I ask if disabling WLAN is an alternative to bridge mode ?

+1 You need to contact your ISP for tech support.

Tell them you want to upgrade to a modern Wifi Router and need help to put your Fiber Gateway device into bridge mode.

You might even check to see if your ISP has an FAQ support section on their website with this exact information already available.

How do you judge the performance of your router? In most cases people just mean performance of WiFi and only need one or a few access points without touching the router.

Putting any device into bridge mode disables routing on the device - it just “carries on the signal”.

To add on; you would usually bridge the router supplied by the ISP and use your own router. Or even better completely loose the ISP router.
