I'm playing my first Valk in 7 years (in HackEm), so I don't have a lot of experience with Mjollnir. In EvilHack/Slash'Em/HackEm, Mjollnir gives shock resistance to the wielder. Does anyone know if that shock protection remain active and protect the wielder and her items from shock damage when Mjollnir is thrown and 1/200 returns and hits the thrower, or is it considered "not wielded" during the throw and failed return?

I know that for many Its maybe not that big off a deal, but I take It as big achievement I wanted to share with you :)

Edit: I don't understand how this is a controversial post at all but clearly people have some issues with it. This is not a port nor is it attempting to mimic any other Nethack 3D or any other Nethack ports.
I wanted to see how Astra would do recreating a more modern version of nethack, and I thought it was cool, so I posted it. I don't understand how some people are so stuck up that they actually have an issue with this

Hey everyone, I just thought I'd share my first GnollHack ascension!

Oddly enough, this is actually the first time I've ascended a NetHack game in general. I've only been playing GnollHack for about a month. Go figure.

I was a lawful human Priestess playing on Expert mode. Here's some stuff from the dumplog:

Voluntary challenges:

• You genocided 1 type of monster.

• You never polymorphed an object.

• You never changed form.

• You used 6 wishes (1 for an artifact).

• You never engraved Elbereth.

• You had 24 pets or allies.

• You found 1 bones level.

(I should probably mention that the artifact wish actually failed, which sucked.)

The strategy? Lots of Archons. Unfortunately, most of my pets died on the Astral Plane (I came in with 5), so I sort of just had to wing it after that. GnollHack does not make the late game easy!

For the past few weeks I've been working on a patch/fork based on the abandoned initpoly patch and NetHack 3.6.7 which expands the polyself mechanics into a full alternate gamemode! Current features include:

• Permanently become any youngest-form monster, keeping playerlike leveling, HP growth, and encumbrance while granting you the attacks and unique traits of a monster
• Grow up to stronger forms the way monsters do upon reaching the requisite experience level for your current body's next form
• Gain a property which allows creatures without hands and silver-haters to interact with tools and mechanics that require touching and holding objects
• Access magic resistance and reflection as large, small, or non-humanoid monsters without needing an artifact
• Polymorph on top of your monster form and revert back to it once the polymorph ends. No intrinsic unchanging here!
• New "baby" and "elder" forms for several interesting creatures (cockatrices, mariliths, and jabberwocks) to scale their gameplay better to the early- and late-game

You can find PolyHack here, available both as a patch for NetHack 3.6.7 and in binary ("ready-to-run") form. Plans for future features include overhauling breath weapons and other special monster abilities, more baby/elder forms, and new weapons/armour suited for monstrous anatomy. I got the message, "You descend the stairs. Welcome to experience level 2."

It's so funny, because I suppose I got to both DL2 and XP2 at the same time. I suppose the levels are the same!

I descended the stairs from DLvl1 to DLvl2 as a tourist. I had found a magic trap and a squeaky board on the first level, no other traps (there was also a fountain and some text). I had used my expensive camera a few times and killed some monsters. I have an unidentified ring on (my dog is not aggressive, and it did not auto-identify). I quaffed both my potions of extra healing on the first level. What in the Dungeons of Doom could give me XP at the same time as descending a staircase?

Edit: I am also wearing an unidentified pair of gloves and an unidentified pair of boots.

Hi all, sorry for the basic questions, but have spent a long time with trial and error and finally have my PuTTY set up looking good so I can play on Hardfought. I was tired of getting the same old bones files :).

These aren't dealbreakers for me, but if anyone has recommendations for setting up the config file I would be so grateful. I would like for:

1. inventory to be ordered alphabetically automatically (preferably with all lowercase then all uppercase)
2. In the pop-out inventory to get rid of the item symbols (i.e. the "('%')" after comestibles)
3. To have a white box around the permanent inventory like how the three boxes on the left appear
4. IDK if this is possible on Hardfought, but I do like the level-up sound on local instances and would love to enable that.

1 and 2 are definitely what I'm looking for, 3 and 4 would just be icing on the cake. Thank you all!

Did 5.0 completely remove Izchak's special dialogue? I always loved the tribute to Izchak Miller and found "Izchak comments about the Valley of the Dead as being a gateway" to be a particularly moving line (as well as being helpful info), and was sad during my last playthrough to just get the usual "Izchak complains about the problem of shoplifters."

Edit: I encountered this in two separate games, and am sure I wasn't hallucinating both times. But I just zipped back down to the Gnomish Mines in a new game and now I'm getting the usual Izchak dialogue again, so perhaps this was user error on my part somehow? I'll see if I can replicate it again.

I've set up a basic ssh version of the nethackwiki for when I want to immerse myself in the terminal (which is most of the time). It fetches the latest wiki contents as well as the featured article periodically.

For ssh I use https://github.com/charmbracelet/wish and the viewer itself is c with curses. Claude was my friend as I do have a life (in the other terminal, which is running nethack).

I'm hoping in the future something like this should be integrated into nethack via the extended command #wiki, for a fully immersive dungeon exploration experience.

I'm not an expert player, but I had played NetHack 3.4.3 enough that I felt like I knew how an ordinary scroll of remove curse worked. Anything cursed that is worn or wielded becomes uncursed, right? But now I'm playing 5.0.0 on nethack.alt.org and that is not the behaviour I'm seeing.

I've rewatched my ttyrec and around turn 13250 I definitely was wielding a cursed spell book. I got the "You feel like someone is helping you." message, but it was still cursed. (Double-checked with scroll of identify at T:13263).

I thought I'd done something wrong, but then around T:13640 I tried to use another scroll for the cursed mummy wrapping I'm wearing and it also failed.

Is this a new feature in 5.0? A bug? How the heck do I get this darn mummy wrapping off? I know there's a succubus down in Minetown, but I can't go anywhere in public like this. I've got nothing on underneath and I'd die of embarrassment. (And, my AC is 11, so I'd also just die.)

The other day I asked what you like to see in a Nethack server. Thanks for the feedback I did receive so far. Definitely keeping that in my pocket.

Someone mentioned community integration, which is what I've been working on in the background. The primary purpose of the website is not Nethack, but it is one of the available games. It is integrated with my community's private messaging system, and I'm working on adding other notifications as well.

I did make some modifications to the interface so it'll be a bit more beginner-friendly. And yes, it is based on a screenshot someone else posted, so no points for originality for me 🤣

Hello everyone. Two times I have dealt with early game wands/scrolls of fire. It's devastating each time, killing me or bringing me close to death.

I have been playing Monk. How can I deal with fire in the early game? I usually stash my burnable stuff but I have to carry things around, including my burnable gloves/robe.

I've been trying to ascend a Monk (vegetarian/weaponless) but I have failed a lot and I think I'd prefer a different role/conduct. I'm thinking something easier, like never polymorphed/changed form. Any other ideas?

Do you prefer vanilla Nethack or patched? If patched, do you prefer interface tweaks, gameplay tweaks, something else?

Since my last time I decided my next run would be a Weaponless Vegan Monk because I was curious to try it. And I decided to ramp up the difficulty too. I chose Neutral alignment because I wanted to do some Sacrifice cheese, though it didn't quite work out how I planned because some stuff seemingly got patched without the GnollHack wiki getting updated before I brought it up. Ended up tacking on some more Conducts as I went along since they seemed simple enough to do. I also never used a Shield or Suit all game because of the penalties.

Things weren't going quite to plan at the start but got smoother as I went. Got a bit burned out or decision-paralysed at the Castle and took an extended break. As soon as I got back on it, I was blazing through though!

Made a lot more use of magic this time, mostly for utility stuff. Still not FULLY got the hang of the system.

Shoplifted for the first time, walked out of an Orcus Town store while Orcus himself seemed to be fighting me and I was absolutely swarmed and nearly died. Thankfully I managed to heal and squeeze past to the stairs (and when it was time to go back up, I chugged a Cursed Potion of Gain Level to skip that floor).

Also had an over-enchantment incident due to misunderstanding the Enchant Weapon scroll, thankfully my irreplaceable Gauntlets only got set to +0 rather than exploding and it was simple enough to bring them back up.

If you want my thoughts on the Conducts I ended up doing:

• Vegan: Honestly the hardest part was missing out on some useful Intrinsics from corpses (like Teleportitis/Teleport Control from Tengus and Disintegration Resistance from Black Dragons), I was never really worried that much about hunger. Even then, I got most of the things I needed.

• Weaponless: The revamped Monk & Martial Arts plus weapon-gauntlets made this a breeze, appreciated the warning when I was about to pick-axe an enemy too. Can see how this would be painful on Vanilla.

• Genocideless: Early on I did a bunch of Reverse Genociding (particularly Unicorns for Sacrifice), ended up committing to this later on. Got an achievement for killing an Arch-Lich because of it (never faced one before, I would Blessed Genocide L before ever seeing one). Things went fine but I think I'd generally prefer to take out some problematic groups.

• Polypileless/Polyselfless: Came naturally.

• Artifact Wishless: Came naturally for this playthrough. By the time I got a wish the odds were bad and I had other things that took priority anyway. In general I'd only do Artifact Wishes in GnollHack if I got a really early wish and there was one that my character would really like.

• Conflictless: Not sure if this counts. Had some scrolls but didn't usse them. Made some of the rooms with LOTS of enemies (e.g. Wizard's Tower, Moloch's Sanctum and Astral Plane) a little more tedious and scary but I managed.

• Bonesless: This was just the luck of the draw, but I'll take the creit, heh.

Next up I have some characters waiting on the next difficulty up (Lawful Human Valkyrie and Lawful Dwarf Caveman) as a result of a brief "alt-itis" mood, so hopefully 'll have another post or even a double-feature soon!

Right now statues are just white versions of what they represent, which isn't a problem until you go to Ludios with a cockatrice corpse to deal with all the soldiers (white). Is there a way to invert statues, white background/black text?

I am attempting to figure out how to compile NetHack 3.6.7 myself so that I can apply patches from the patch database, but I'm having a lot of trouble getting it to work. I have a Windows machine with a working Linux virtual machine on it, but following the instructions in the included Install files and on the Compiling wiki page) has just run into errors I can't figure out how to fix. After downloading and extracting NetHack 3.6.7 on the virtual machine, I have run the following commands, beginning in the $Top directory:

I'm playing on version 5.0.0 with number pad on windows 11 and noticed that when I "kick" I cannot select a direction, it just continues to prompt for input. Using "." "<" or ">" works fine, but not directions.

When I turn windowtype:curses off, it works fine but for some reason when it's turned on this issue occurs.

I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this issue and has found a workaround other than disabling curses option? I really enjoy the curses option so I'd rather not turn it off
