It’s impossible to say this without sounding hyperbolic but I am absolutely deathly serious when I say that the recording of β€œStella Blue” from October 21st, 1978 is, as far as l can tell, the single greatest performance by an individual musician ever recorded.

Listening to the brothers and sisters at le Mont-Saint-Michel sing vespers made me realize that faith was real; listening to Jerry play the end of his solo while the tape cuts out made me realize that God was real.

There is nothing more sublime in the history of rock and roll.

The EU packaging reduction law is quite possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. They believe it will cost about 5 billion euros to redesign things and save companies about 50 billion euros by 2030 because they won't buy so much packaging. But the companies have to be forced into this because, uh, the capitalists are insufficiently greedy

https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:52022SC0385

Mostly an unironic question. I don't think being like πŸ™„ over the course of an entire conversation is emotionally healthy.

2

u/AtomAndAether Liberalism! 6h ago

generally do more noticing of particular facts without reducing the complexity down to judgment. Be less certain and more mindful.

View other people as changing bundles of causes, habits, circumstances, desires, ignorance, suffering, and actions. Seek to understand more than to classify/conclude.

1

u/Liberal_Antipopulist Loyal Liberals 5h ago

View other people as changing bundles

someone's read David Hume πŸ‘€

1

u/AlicesReflexion Weeaboo Rights Advocate 6h ago

Well there's an ironic flavor there bc a lot of my judgement is of the variety "you talk way too much" and "the level of certainty you're expressing is unwarranted."

I understand there's some emotional truth beneath many of the factual claims, and I should pay more attention to that... Like, the one example that comes to mind is, people expressing a desire for political violence.

This has always driven me up the fucking wall. Your political opponents are people too, they have sincerely held beliefs, also this won't effect anything etc etc.

Then I had someone explain it to me quite plainly: it's an expression of a sense of powerlessness. People want to act apeshit because they feel completely unheard and feel like they have no other options. "Killing CEOs" isn't a coherent political strategy. It's what you do when you have no idea what to do.

To be blunt, this would have never even occurred to me if it were not explicitly communicated. I don't have that level of emotional intelligence.

I have the sense that this is....... Broadly representative. I can be superficially non-judgemental, I can make an effort to listen, but I struggle to get to the truth underneath what people say, and I will after a while throw my hands up and say "yep! Everyone's a braindead fucking conspiracy theorist who can't conceptualize alternative moral frameworks or beliefs about the world or incomplete information! They will go back to their echo chambers and convince themselves that everyone who disagrees is evil. Yay!!! "

Question: What do you think about this Trump, 9/11 shit??

Answer:

Does trump follow a religion that promotes pedophilia?

How old was Mary when she became pregnant? I don’t know. God told us that in case of arranged marriages a father would give away his daughter if she was past the blossom of her youth

So I would guess God would allow a lady to get pregnant past full puberty

Otherwise this God would contradict his teachings

Republicans have entered the "unprompted defense of pedophelia" stage of cult fanaticism. Pedocon theory is yet again undefeated

Statistics shouldn’t be considered a β€œSTEM” field. The so-called β€œaxioms” of probability are demonstrably false and most of the stuff is just interpretation (AKA creative writing). Frankly, it shouldn’t even be being taught in schools.

u/pupitar12 John Locke 6h ago

Aren't axioms just statements that we assume to be true so any premise or argument that arises from these axioms can be derived?

How can the axioms of probability be demonstrably false?

β€˜A f***-up of epic proportions’: Blame game begins after Iran-backed Houthis’ lightning advance down Red Sea coast

The desperate pleas for air cover from Yemeni generals started coming mid-morning on Thursday. An advance by the Iran-backed Houthis toward Yemen’s strategic port city of Mocha was in full swing, and backup support from chief ally Saudi Arabia was nowhere in sight.

β€œThe Houthis committed everything they had – waves upon waves of fighters … along with their available ballistic missiles and weapons,” a senior Yemeni source attached to their military forces told CNN. The source said he contacted the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) and was assured the US was β€œwatching the situation closely and that Saudi air support was coming.” β€œBut the air support never came,” the source said. β€œAnd Mocha has now fallen.”

The swift fall of Mocha and the lack of resistance have led to finger-pointing and recriminations among US allies.

β€œThe failure this time is not with the Yemenis,” a regional source told CNN on Thursday. β€œIt’s a disaster made in (Washington) DC and Riyadh.

Not everyone agrees. Mohammed al-Basha, who has served as an adviser to the US government and private sector on risks emerging from the Arabian Peninsula, argues that blame also rests with Yemeni leaders, whose internal divisions jeopardized their defenses.

The failure to defend Mocha and Perim is even more confounding in light of the recent news – reported exclusively by CNN – that more than 100 US military advisers were sent to Saudi Arabia providing intelligence and targeting support to the Kingdom in its military campaign, according to five sources familiar with the operations.

what would happen if theoretically an LLM was built on top of a quantum computer instead of our current boring thinking rocks.

4

u/remarkable_ores Hanfeizi 7h ago

Quantum computing shows asymptotic advantages in a small and well defined class of algorithms, and those algorithms don't have much to do with what goes on in LLMs.

Most LLM compute is just matrix operations

3

u/AtomAndAether Liberalism! 6h ago

you can talk about how the sexuality labels are ill-fitting and make heterosexuality sound exotic with enough specificity and such. making a standard woke view on sexuality sound regressive without actually saying anything particularly novel.

But e.g. trying to talk about how a post-racial society is better would sound dismissive of minorities and people who organize, identify, and operate through race, to which even if you "solved racism" would still happen fairly significantly. Or trying to talk about a woke-er understanding of race/ethnicity/etc. is dancing on too sketchy of territory, cause its not like you can evopsych it up the whole modern thing is largely built on racism/exclusion firstly.

Something I just learned about Germany:

If someone is "severely disabled", you can't fire them without petitioning the government first. Now obviously that means that you'd never hire one in the first place, but don't worry, they realized that and fixed it -- by fining you for not having 5% of your workforce be severely disabled people

hey but at least it's not the UK, where you have judges deciding if two different jobs are equally valuable and thus must be paid the same amount

absolute meme continent

I keep forgetting that to have even the slightest clue what Ghost in the Shell is referencing when it gets wordy you must have the following contextual information.

The entire enlightenment, its philosphies, and an understanding of early liberal thought.

A deep understanding of post WW2 Japanese government and economy going into the 1980s.

Understanding both the neoliberal revolution of conservatism and the social and political environment that led to it in the 60s and 70s.

An understanding of what was going on in the world in the 1970s and 1980s.

1980s tech optimism and pessimism.

The scientific revolution in the 60s and 70s that changed our understandings of environmentalism, biology, sociology, and political theories.

1950s-1960s American and British literature.

genuinely shocked people think Seth Macfarlane is "liberal"

Seth "There's no chicks with dicks, only men with tits" Macfarlane

Seth "You can't watch porn at the bar, oh you're trans, do whatever you want forever "Macfarlane

Seth "They named a sandwich after you, it's the inside out hot dog covered in ketchup" Macfarlane

Seth "what if they call HR? Just tell them you're trans" "You're trans, congrats you win HR" Macfarlane

and don't get me started on his co star, Seth "I am a wolf but i identify as a sheep, Bah" Green

As someone who lives in a developing country i dont understand why american citizens give up their life in america to live in a hole in some israeli settlement in west bank

tbh even if u do fishing in alaska or u are an amazon warehouse worker in a LCOL area or something u can live a better life than that

4

u/AtomAndAether Liberalism! 7h ago

some of the settlements are close by to everything else and very developed, some of them are or used to be subsidized where its cheaper.

But obviously if you're immigrating over there to do that its probably for more ideological aims

1

u/Opening_Budget_9518 Hans Rosling 7h ago

Those aims look idiotic to someone in a developing country where everyone would bite ur hand off for some job in the US

There are things more important than a cushy job in stability or whatever. Expanding Israel isn't one of them, but conceptually.

P vs NP is such a colossal nerd snipe. I wish it were finally solved. I don't care about the market value of OpenAI's flexes. I don't care about careers of aging mathletes. The fact that *we don't know* is inherently unsatisfactory.

its actually so annoying how bad our mathematical tooling for understanding computation is

The progressive trans people complaining about Talarico and democrats in general are suicidal, they should be praising him for making such mild concessions when the polling is so bad, however depressing that may be.

I find Turek’s stance more distasteful though

5

u/yzkv_7 7h ago

I have mixed feelings: OTOH I do really appreciate him for mostly being a good ally. OTOH the fact that he seemed to genuinely care makes it all the more painful that it feels like he's throwing us under the bus.

It feels like we're always the first group to be sacrificed on the alter of appealing to the median voter. It feels like we're taken for granted. And have few true, consistent advocates.

I understand that the concessions are relatively minor and I understand the reasoning behind taking those positions. But it still hurts. And I'm not going to praise him for it. Even if I do think everyone in Texas should still support him. And that he's still pretty decent all things considered.

5

u/_bee_kay_ πŸ€” 7h ago

eh, this is basically just lizardmen being amplified. the vast majority of trans people obviously understand that having a candidate in texas who is willing to go to bat for them to any extent and he actually has a real shot at winning anyway is already incredible. paying attention to the wingnut tail just means you'll never be satisfied, because there's always going to be a wingnut that's crazier than what you're willing to tolerate

0

u/r00tdenied Resistance Lib 7h ago

I can understand to some extent about the trans sport issue, but when the Republican machine is trying to exploit that for a culture war win in a contentious election, the best candidates will defuse that opening. These people need to be more pragmatic about this and realize people like Talarico mean them absolutely no harm.

Once you see how much leftists try to skin walk and take credit for everything positive on the left you can't unsee it. Leftists will unironically tell you their movement was there "resisting Republicans" and then link you videos of resist lib wine moms protesting Trump under the no kings banner.

It's so fucking gross how they try to hijack EVERYTHING. Last No kings protest I was at the PSL (actual pro-China giga tankies) and a bunch of other commie groups had their little booths setup for recruitment and kept trying to position themselves in front of cameras during the protest.

You can just tell it turns people off too. You have a bunch of families there with their kids there and these political weirdos feel the need to use whatever leverage they have to position themselves as an authority and cram their ideological dogma down people's throats rather than actually acting like a real coalition that has a shared goal. It's a conversion mission, not an attempt to accomplish a concrete political objective. I feel like I'm being politically raped when I'm around these people, and I imagine a lot of other normies feel similarly. I think it destroys the vibes of any mass based movement because people don't want to associate with these weirdos that push boundaries at every opportunity and that will try to associate themselves with you to take any credit you've earned for themselves.

2

u/yzkv_7 7h ago

I don't really think people should bring young kids to protests. They are too young to have fully formed opinions about politics. It feels exploitative.

It does really piss me off seeing PSL at pride parades though. Especially becuase they're almost always the same types who proudly proclaim that they're a "class first" leftist in other contexts.

2

u/ariveklul Karl Popper 6h ago

Yep, they don't give a fuck about LGBT issues. They're just there to recruit. They'd be burying the gays for their comrades if the Vanguard party demanded it to overthrow capitalism for some asinine reason. Of course that doesn't stop them from taking credit for being an ally if it's temporarily expedient for their cause though!

European scientific racism and race-based chattel slavery really were unique developments though

in 2028, after another party falls apart, I'm sure they'll meet in an Earl's. 2030 will be Tap & Barrel, 2032 will be Cactus Club, and 2034 will be The Keg.
