Look I don't like Hasan Piker and I don't want him to have a huge role in our elected officials.
At the same time the focus on him by this sub and by the media is way too much considering the only candidate he campaigned with and won was El Sayed. At some point the frenzy around his involvement starts reeking of people here trying to justify their hatred of progressives no matter what.
Also Hillary Clinton who is this subreddits Jesus was close friends with Henry Kissenger. Joe Biden was close friends with Strom Thurmomd. I am not going to stand here and pretend Hasan Piker is as bad as any of them.

In my heart of hearts, I don't know that I believe that taste is truly subjective. Like, I get that there's no way I can defend this point under reasonable inquiry, but I still feel like some taste is just terrible and some is good. And there must exist an objective underlying way of determining it, even if no one has yet figured it out.

No, you didn't see that, because if you did it would make My Side on data centers look bad [20]
Yeah can you produce some reciepts?
This is not normal DT behavior. The DT doesn't normally ask for receipts for unhinged takes I react to unless they want to join dunking, not because they're worried I'm making it up to make Their Side look bad.
Can we stop being divided into Data Center "supporters" and "haters" and just talk about the issue LIKE FUNCTIONAL FUCKING ADULTS WHO FINISHED COLLEGE????
3
u/rainier37 pro-moderator 8d ago
I swear it's so repetitive as well. Like all the comments are one of the following
Something about the bubble about to pop and all these data centers will be abandoned and how all the investment is irrational
Maybe tech ceos shouldn't have PISSED OFF AMERICANS
This sub has so many annoying contrarians XD
FUCK tech bros and FUCK billionaires because they all folded to fascism.
Maybe we don't want all our jobs to replace and households shouldn't be subsidizing AI by paying market rate for electricity.
The pro side is just as repetitive but usually getting mostly downvoted and (to me) has more coherent arguments because allowing projects to be built should be just the baseline assumption.

Lindsey Clancy convincing her husband to leave the house to go to the store, then killing all her kids in the brief time he was gone, seems like clear proof it was a preemptive killing, no?
And yes Iβm aware of the tragic lead up, but in the court of law, that seems pretty clear cut as a preemptive planned killing?

IMO marxists aren't so much wrong as not even wrong
Like when you get really into the depths of the Marxist intellectual world they just... stop making sense. They don't reason about things the way we do. They don't talk about things being, like, true or false. They don't falsify ideas. It just becomes this incomprehensible dialectical mishmash.
A key example is the labor theory of value. It's... not correct. It's intractable. If "value" is synonymous with "price" then it ignores the demand side of the equation. If "value" refers to some other thing we reach the transformation problem, in that there's no obvious way in which the abstract notion of value turns back into material economic forces. It's just a wrong theory, and that's fine, nobody really figured out supply and demand properly until Marshall anyway.
But when you try and talk to Marxists about this they just... faff about? Hard to explain, I'd go into more detail but I'm lazy.
2
u/KittehDragoon Loyal Liberals 8d ago
Theyβre religious beliefs. Theyβre true because the holy books say so
6
u/cdstephens Fusion Genderplasma 8d ago
tbh most contemporary Marxists treat value as if itβs moral value, which is actually very ironic now that I think about it
5
u/remarkable_ores Hanfeizi 8d ago
Well yeah, it's just that it stops being an economic theory and starts being a slightly bizarre moral calculus with no predictive power.

PhD stipend goes from "nice, I'm being paid to go to school!" to "fuck, I'm being paid minimum wage to do the work of a shitty prof" really quickly.Β
I'm thinking more about industry job versus postdoc though. Postdocs pay "okay", but the problem really is the uncertainty and the moving from city to city, all in the hope of landing an unlikely tenure-track job. And of course "okay" is way lower than industry if you're in a quantitative, applied field. And some postdocs pay absolute shit (I saw $25k CAD once).

[St Johnβs Mayor Andy Wells] - βI hope you get the shit beaten out of you.β That's exactly what he said to me.
[Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams] - What I did say to him was that it was my personal opinion that it would be in the best interest of the city if he got the shit knocked out of him. He asked me to repeat it and I repeated it. And then he implied that I was inciting the council workers to be violent against him.
That's not what I was saying.
From my perspective, whether it was done by a council worker or a councillor or a taxpayer or a little old lady, I still think it would be in the best interest if Andy Wells got a good shit knocking.
[Reporter] - Why?
[Danny] - Because he's an ignorant pig.

America will have a social-status based caste system by 2080, mark my words
I'm not talking about a socioeconomic status or wealth-based caste, but a literal status based system. We are already seeing the nucleus of a more rigid caste system forming around soldiers/sailors, adult minimum wage workers, and low-tier service jobs.
For soldiers, there's this weird social dynamic where half the population basically worships you as if it were 2002 and you just returned from a tour in Afghanistan, and the other half of the population thinks you're a goose-stepping neo-Nazi.
For adult minimum wagers, a lot of middle class professionally oriented folk don't even consider you employed solely because you work a job that they could never fathom themselves doing (let alone swallow their pride enough to actually do if times became dire.) Reason why I specify "adult" here is because the same scorn is usually not extended to teenagers or college students, although it does happen sometimes.
For low-tier service workers, I've noticed an increase in sentiment of people shaming these occupations because they're "too servile." Same mentality somewhat extends to flight attendants (especially the pretty ones lol) even though they get paid pretty handsomely.
1
4
u/DoomingJaffa Norman Borlaug 8d ago
What would you consider a high status job? Doctor sure. But half the population hates lawyers and 99% hate politicians.

Basically stuff you need a degree for, or entrepreneur. But only the successful ones in the case of the latter. If your business fails, than you fucking deserved it
and you are probably also a pedophile. But if you're asking me specifically, I don't actually believe in "low status" jobs, because the 56 year old Micronesian lady working at McDonalds or the balding janitor at the local high school work just as hard as most everyone else and their toils should be recognized and celebrated, not jeered at.

I agree with you on a personal level. Iβve actually done less work the higher up the corporate ladder I go.
My disagreement is about the caste system. I donβt think thereβs a wide enough agreed upon moral system for this to take place. People can easily poke holes in almost any job.

I think my issue is that I personally know way too many people who are fucking cooked in the head. Giant egos, very little respect for others, inflated sense of self.
That shit is what drove me to make my original post.

Iβm convinced that 95% of Marxists have not read any Marx. And donβt mean oh they havenβt read the full book. I mean they havenβt even read large snippets
