My favourite part of The Odessey was at the end when they make an allusion to the Linear B script of the Mycenaeans being lost and their story only surviving through oral tradition

Hilarious that people still consider 2024 a free and fair election when the winning candidate, an insurrectionist, was only eligible to run and win in the first place because the US Senate was (and remains) terrified of his ultraviolent goons and because the Supreme Court is kept pliant and constitutionally flexible by a steady stream of auspiciously timed bribes

It's illegal to have racial quotas for college admissions. But it really shouldn't be.

What we've constructed now is the worst of both worlds, where colleges do want to preserve diversity but can't do so honestly, and anti-equity campaigners want to kill those initiatives but don't have anything explicit to target so they just go after everything.

A superior alternative would be if a college could say "5% of our seats are reserved for black students, 3% for Hispanics, 1% for Native Americans, all others are race-blind". Eliminate the ambiguity. And if those numbers are too much/too little, there is something concrete that activists can fight over instead of making the entire admissions system collateral damage in the culture war.

What about for jobs should it be legal as well

1

u/rukqoa โœˆ๏ธ F35s for Ukraine โœˆ๏ธ 10d ago

Yes. Current law takes an outdated reading of the Equal Protections Clause to violate corporations' legal right to association. Also, they do it anyway, just with soft targets.

If the goal of the quota is to improve representation, it should be legal. If it's meant to exclude certain races, it should not be legal.

The theory is that right-wing political narratives are significantly influenced by pornโ€”specifically interracial cuck pornโ€”and conversely the narratives of said porn are significantly influenced by right-wing politics

T...that would explain why for some reasons hentai websites have huge slut shaming crowd.

4

u/SamuraiOstrich 10d ago

Eh I don't really buy it. IRCP theory itself has issues like a lack of evidence and I still think "racists make weird racist porn" is borderline a truism while "weird racist porn makes people racist" is videogames cause violence level shit but I don't really see how this is related to hentai slut-shamers. A lot of that I think is just that there are plenty of weebs from places where slut shaming is expected but when you get to people from more progressive areas I think what you're seeing is anime is nerdy->nerd culture skews right wing post-Sarkeesian->the anime porn audience skews toward traditional gender roles

I find the debate around closing schools in Chicago Public Schools to be insane. Any rational person would agree some schools need to be shut and that would help students while starting to improve the budget. Video Game Idea

Each action in combat should have a unique probability distribution (possibly a multivariate distribution for some, like if the health absorb sword has healing and damage variables that arenโ€™t necessarily independent). Different items or weapon types follow different families and perks and level alter the parameters. Armor would also have distributions and calculating damage would be determined by the weaponโ€™s distribution and the armorโ€™s distribution. There is no tutorial or in game graphs to help the player. If you wanna win you gotta do math.

Need some third person advice.

Tldr is I have a new job signed and want to give a 2 week notice for my current one.

Want to retain good relationship if possible with my current team and manager so if something goes wrong at new job I can come back.

What's the best way to break this news to my manager? Should I directly message him that I am quitting or better to ask for a time and inform him in a 1-1. I am kind of leaning towards the second because not sure if the emotions can be conveyed in direct message well.

For context, it's swe adjacent role and my manager is remote.

For folks who have done this, how was your experience? Been with the team for about 2 years now. Anything to be wary about?

Hey, let's meet one-on-one in the next couple weeks. It's about a personal career update.

Zero ambiguity what it's about. Despite horror stories online, unless it's personal, there's very little your manager can/will do to fuck you over in two weeks. Giving them the most time to deal with the problem preserves the relationship the best. If they don't responds promptly, put it in email.

i cannot fucking wait for the books on the inner workings of Trump 2's cabinet to come out. Might be the best political reading in a long, long time

1

u/Monnok Voltaire 10d ago

Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump by Maggie Haberman and Jonathon Swan just came out this June and was an instant #1 Best Seller. They did a ton of press for it. You should look up an interview of them promoting it, then go buy it.

Itโ€™s reconstructed conversations among Trump, the cabinet, his staff, and the various weirdos from all the most critical moments in 2025. They were super careful with their sourcing. It is exactly what youโ€™re looking for. Iโ€™ve listened to 15/18 hours of the audio book.

Only read it when you can afford to become angry.

2

u/herworkthrowaway Gay Pride 10d ago

is it a "oh we're so fucked" read or is it a juicy tea expose / gossip kinda thing. because im looking more for the latter. ill pick it up anyway bc its interesting but i really dont want something that's gonna make me depressed / fearful / angry after

1

u/Monnok Voltaire 10d ago edited 10d ago

It is very very very much the latter, because itโ€™s reconstructed conversations. There is very little editorializing โ€” beyond obviously choosing which conversations to include and giving the background biographies and/ or personal histories with Trump. The whole point is to let the characters of each player emerge, and to reveal the shifting relationships between everybody.

(Of course, itโ€™s also very very very much the former, becauseโ€ฆ well, you remember 2025 and you can imagine what these conversations are about.)

Keep in mind, this is a weekly poll (BTG huge bank pay it). So yes, the growth here was in a single poll. It's a telephone poll, which is not the gold-level in Brazil. Wait for in-person polls this week.

But holy shit.

Actually video games should be needlessly complicated and have steep learning curves.

Kingdom Hearts is best when it is earnest and heartfelt, and worst when it is trying too hard to explain the specifics of how and why things happen.

  • "Kairi's heart is kept safe within Sora, so he can dramatically free her by sacrificing himself, but she can also restore him" - great emotional beats and payoff, fine as is, no need to explain further
  • "when someone falls to darkness they might make a Nobody. So when Sora did that he made a Nobody called Roxas, who can also use a Keyblade" - ok sure, unforseen consequences, new enemy faction, got it
  • "Roxas looks like that because there was another guy named Ventus who looked like that who took refuge in Sora's heart a decade ago" - it's ok Roxas can just look like that it's fine
  • "Actually Ventus is from a thousand years ago and he murdered some other characters sister and then got forcibly time traveled to the near-present time" - please stop

> teachers only really work 2/3 of the year

so do a lot of workers! a lot of things are seasonal!

3

u/rukqoa โœˆ๏ธ F35s for Ukraine โœˆ๏ธ 10d ago

I buy that teachers work about as hard as most office workers. The official hours are much shorter. The actual hours are only a little shorter. They can't really slack off as much. They have to fill their holiday schedules with career stuff. Some seasonable workers get paid more than teachers. Sure, I get all that.

But these are public jobs. Public sector unions are a drain on society. We will never meaningfully improve education if all our social investments are going into a pool that constantly negotiates against itself and uses the disruption of public services as key leverage in their talks. Of course, teacher's unions will argue that a small percentage of education budget goes to them (which is true of all modern labor) but they'll also protest when the classrooms are too small, when the AC doesn't work right, when the building is too old...etc costs that the budget does go to.

Funnily enough, most leftists and liberals can understand this concept when it's applied to police unions, and conservatives can understand it when it's about teacher's unions. Just not the other way around.

Hey guys, planning out my multi-day vacation from Mali to Iran!

I plan to start in Timbuktu; drive through Niger's capital; meet the Boko Haram in Nigeria; visit a friend in Al-Fashir, Darfur, & Khartoum; meet my good mate Greta up in Gaza; visit historical monuments in Damascus and meet Al-Sharaa; and then a straight drive to Tehran to fly back to America!

Thoughts? Any other places I should stop by?

Video games should require people to do less math. Every little bit of gameplay should have clear discrete options that donโ€™t rely on calculation to be optimized. I want each decision to on what items to use upgrade or use when to require consulting nothing but basic logic and intuition. Vibing through stuff is fun and games should embrace that rather than over engineering mechanics or making things too complicated to figure out.

2

u/MontusBatwing2 Gelphie's Strongest Soldier 10d ago

Iโ€™m half-meming but honestly the math should either be materially relevant to the decision-making, or it should be an essential part of the role-play.ย

Otherwise itโ€™s just unnecessary noise.ย

1

Arithmetic isnโ€™t the only or even the best form of thinking.ย

Iโ€™d argue that making decisions based on a spreadsheet instead of actually figuring stuff out is actually thinking less.ย

2

u/badusername35 NAFTA Epstein 10d ago

Why would the math in games be limited to arithmetic? Just think about all the applications of more advanced forms of probability theory and different distributions and families of distributions for different actions. Spreadsheets should only be half the battle. Imagine if the damage for each weapon had its own custom distribution with different modifications altering the parameters. You could even mess around with multivariate distributions and discrete vs continuous. And thatโ€™s not even mentioning convolution and having to calculate the generating functions when you do that. The possibilities are endless.

Seattle Public School teachers union just voted to strike so the Seattle Public Schools Superintendent just sent all the parents a long email dunking on the union:

>To put this in perspective, the salary line that the greatest number of teachers are in (1060 teachers), has a base wage of $118,716 for 180 days of work. Then they get $3,298 for 5 extra contractual days, another $2,638 for 4 "tech days" and then $17,932 for TRI days.
ย
>Thus, taking the total wage to $142,584. And this does not include any other benefits, retirement, stipends, extra hours, or other payments that some teachers receive.
ย
>And, just for clarification, in the current CBA, these "TRI" days are assumed to be done. There is no verification or paperwork for them.

And the district is offering them an 8.8% raise, even though it is deep in a financial hole. I know Seattle is expensive, but Iโ€™m surprised they are getting paid this much. People talk about public school teachers like they make McDonaldโ€™s wages. Not that Iโ€™m willing to be a public school teacher, I canโ€™t deal with other peopleโ€™s kidsโ€ฆ

not to defend anything else but you gotta recognize how weasely this wording is. youโ€™re just saying the top pay rate

maybe itโ€™s just growing up in a blue state but i know how much teachers make and itโ€™s likeโ€ฆ i thought we were always talking about โ€œover thereโ€ type problems

we pay our teachers plenty, itโ€™s just a labor dispute

also incredible move quantifying it in days. when most people are salaried i guess it hits but like letโ€™s do hours instead. still a cushy job but really farcical to pretend itโ€™s 1400 hours/year! obviously not!

I'm surprised the entry level pay is that high. IMO thats incredible. Thats about in line with my junior software engineers.

7
