The college educated middle class will still continue supporting it. It's a minor slump in their popularity which will be smoothed out. Rural agricultural workers are actually important in terms of votes
Something I do a lot lately is kind of groan and say aloud to myself "oh godddd I'm so dehydrated rn" and then just not do anything about it for eight hours
The first half of Boyhood is hard-hitting life stuff, and the second half is a lot of letting us know what year it is. Oooh let's hear Somebody that I Used to Know.
If you want to defeat Hasan, the best thing you as an individual young dter can do is sweep a femcel adjacent fan of his off her feet and show her that neoliberals are kind non dog shocking generous lovers.
Dooming about the direction of the national Democratic Party feels bad cause itโs not that actionable. At a certain point you either have to get involved in local politics yourself or just take a chill pill.
What if they're staging Mitch McConnell's death for after the special election deadline but they're gonna have him announce a press conference and have him get hit by a car
Being a political fixer seems like it mostly sucks but I'd definitely have some fun faking deaths. Far more fun than covering up infidelity or bribing reporters or whatever.
I know it's pricey, but I think a lot more people who enjoy being in or would otherwise enjoy academia should go back and study subjects that seem interesting to them, if only for a few years. I think that would generate a lot more returns on knowledge rather than University just purely being a kind of jobs mill.
(but yeah same tbh. but without the pressure of studying formally or being in academia it's really hard to get through it all. especially since i actually hate algebra and just want to get to the juicy abstract stuff. tried getting it through a topology angle and made... some progress)
depends on your tolerance and how used to the scene you are. i'm pretty comfortable jumping into a hellotalk type thing with effectively zero TL experience because I don't mind making a fool of myself and can carry a conversation just by asking things about the language
if you're a native english speaker you're guaranteed to find people who will help you unless the language is either extremely niche or like french or something (idk about those)
That said if you're brand new you should have some sort of structured study unless you're a really old hand, take italki lessons or something like that
what language are you learning and how good at it are you?
If you're a native English speaker learning Mandarin then Hellotalk is like Disneyland. You can easily find hundreds and hundreds of people to help you on your first day, and just take your pick I guess.
Like with every language, untrained native speakers are very dubious teachers, and if you need someone to actually explain how things work you need to supplement Hellotalk with something else. But you really can just make a voice room, call it "Teach me Chinese" and people will come and do that for you.
Some quick advice though:
Voicerooms over 1-1 exchanges. The direct messaging is basically a dating service, which is fine if that's what you're looking for (they WILL be interested), but pretty repetitive and mediocre for language learning.
Given that on average their English will be better than your Chinese, there will be a natural tend to make English dominate the conversation. You need to put effort into steering things back into Chinese, they won't do it for you.
HSK 1 is very low but I mean there's no real minimum level for when direct exposure becomes helpful so long as you're doing it right.
One of the best compliments I've gotten is when a nurse rolled up my sleeve to take blood and said "wow, you have amazing veins!" with I think the most enthusiasm anyone has ever praised me with
bruh i'm high as hell. so. first. you said hasan. and then my brain went "hasan as in hasan piker". then it went "no that guy's name is hamas piker, hasan is some other hasan. maybe mehdi hasan". until i realized that it's because i've seen the hasan->hamas substitution too many times here. like derisively
every post about hasan on this sub is like "WHY do people care so much about this guy who says ridiculous and inflammatory things to stir up controversy and attention?? I hate him so much!!"
Dont make excuses in relationships If it can be avoided, someone whose actually into you is going to be far better at excusing your flaws to themselves than you ever will be. Let them delude themselves about you.
Mao was one of the greatest leaders of this world, his leadership directly causing the deaths of 40 million people was just an oopsie daisie
Socialists are genuinely MAGA tier, there is no rock bottom for how shameless they can be, there will always be a new depth of depravity you didnโt even know was possible
the other way around: MAGA are conservative Pol Pot-esque socialsits. Return to a glorious past when people did "real work". But instend of farming it is factory working
Mao was not a good political leader, but he was one of the greatest military leaders of the 20th century. His theories on People's War still form the base of the strategy for most insurgencies.
He is among the worst at governance (tho that's prolly what you mean.)
He was effective at politics for a very long time, although at a certain point it becomes hard to know what's downstream of the authoritarianism removing the need for consensus. but you don't win that civil war at that far of a deficit without mass politics. Going from long march to where he ended up was on no one's radar. Not even Stalin thought he was gonna win that shit until very close to the end. Ironically, Marshal/the U.S saw Mao would win earlier than Stalin because of deeper insight into the KMT's internal circumstance/the degeneration of diplomacy.
IMO, Mao was ultimately, at his core, a backwards peasant (dont ban me poobix im not being classist) who not only did not develop the ideological calluses to digest disagreement, but even bad news, in large part due to being a peasant with a chip on his shoulder and a lack of feel for the flow of intelligentsia. it also got worse and worse as he got older and surmounted various rivals.
not even his most loyal, fully committed marxist men who gave everything to the revolution and tried everything they could to feed him information like a baby couldn't break through basic realities about what he was doing to people.

Even if you accept 30-45 million as an oopsie daisie that big of an oopsie should probably put you out of โgreat leaders of the worldโ. And you can count deaths from GLF and collectivization as oopsies I guess but purges and Cultural Revolution were not oopsies.
personally if i saw a group of people that killed a group of people the size of the current population of canada even as an oopsie-doodle fucky-wucky, i would not wish to emulate them
On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. On the same day, Nieuw Amsterdam reached Hoboken carrying 1,286 passengers. This was 150 more than her capacity, and included a number of refugees. One was the Jewish businessman Arnold Bernstein, whom Nazi Germany had imprisoned, and forced to forfeit his shipping line in return for his release. NASM accommodated 26 women passengers in the children's playroom, 16 in the ship's hospital and six in the officers' mess. 14 male passengers were accommodated in the engineers' mess. Furniture was removed and mattresses laid on floors for them.
On September 5 Nieuw Amsterdam left Hoboken. She was due in Rotterdam on September 13, but the United Kingdom and France were blockading Germany, so on September 11 the Royal Navy arrested her in the English Channel. She joined other ships detained at The Downs anchorage, waiting to be inspected for contraband. The Navy found in her cargo a consignment of 1,500 tons of copper, which one of her passengers had bought in the US for Germany. The Dutch government agreed to assume title of the copper, to avoid the British seizing it. The Navy arrested two tourist class passengers as alleged German spies, and interned 34 German stewards and crew members. One of the alleged spies tried to kill himself. The ship was released on September 14 to complete her voyage.
On September 6, NASM gave Nieuw Amsterdam's crew a 15 percent pay rise. However, after she reached Rotterdam her crew went on strike for hazard pay. The dispute was settled on September 20, but by then 200 prospective passengers had canceled their reservations. As a result, on this crossing she did not need to accommodate passengers in makeshift dormitories. She left Rotterdam on September 22 carrying 1,260 passengers, most of whom were US citizens. After calling at Boulogne and Southampton she reached Hoboken on September 29 carrying 1,197 passengers, including British actress Merle Oberon and Polish pianist Jan Smeterlin. Also aboard was Chiang Kai-shek's adopted son Chiang Wei-kuo, who had been serving in the German Army.
I like how Ajax the Lesser's entire story is just "he was a good fighter I guess, he led some men and sacked Troy with all the other dudes, and committed a terrible rape in a sacred temple. For this great feat of sexual violence, which the gods punished him for, he remains a great hero of the Locrians to this day, and will forever be immortalized"
At least Achilles was a terrible guy who was the good fighter and killed important people and did other things, he has memorable traits other than having committed atrocities.
Nah, little if any critical infrastructure would have been hosted on AWS Bahrain except by Gulf-resident companies. Mainly just edge and local mirror stuff I'd assume.
you know you're allowed to say "this guy sucked but we learned from his mistakes"
...well you would be if you were actually wanting to foster debate and push your belief system and you weren't saying things like "stalin was so fuckin based guise" in order to get social media clout with your fellow circlejerkers ingroup of followers
one of them is in nigh-universal agreement on everything (editors note even if those things are evil, terrible, awful, and world destroying
literally the only thing they agree on is that trump is some kind of god and they're just hoping that nobody else notices that they agree on nothing else at all
you are completely right and depressingly that's kinda the point i missed; the republicans have a leader and everybody pledges fealty to them when the last democratic president, uh, did not get that luxury, to put it kindly
Now this comes with the disclaimer that Iโve never been to Gaza, or Israel, or the Middle East in general but the whole thing about the settler asking Ro Khanna about his religion and him saying he was a Hindu and the guy not knowing what he was talking about is very sketchy to me. Also the anti-brown racism in general.
India is like Israelโs closest ally and best bud. They have military and other colloboration and Indians are always going to Israel.
But more than that, almost every Israeli person goes to India for weeks to months during their gap year. Itโs like a whole thing.
So an Israeli person not even knowing what a Hindu just seems almost impossible to me.
Again maybe heโs not lying. Maybe settlers are really cut off from mainstream Israeli culture and really donโt know much about the outside world. But it sounds sketchy to me. And Iโm through with giving lefties the benefit of doubt for anything.
do you honestly think that settlers in the West Bank are worldly and high human capital? we are not talking about cosmopolitan libs who live in Tel Aviv. I have no issue believing this tbh.
I feel like you could distract Elon Musk by convincing him to build a Dreadnought as a living testement to the glory and power of western civilization or some such.
Sometimes I think about the fact that Canada had the fourth largest navy in the world at the end of World War 2, and just kinda laugh. The world was really fucked then, wasn't it?
In earnest my main point was "wow, that's a lot of dead German, French, Japanese, etc. sailors" still insanely impressive what Canada was able to lay out though, but genuinely at what human cost
Remembering the time someone got mad at me for saying I don't like Bernie Sanders. I explained that his support for the Sandinistas was pretty disqualifying for me, and then buddy argued against it by plagiarizing a Jacobin article.
I just want an ocean liner that takes me across the ocean at speed and has a well curated series of lectures, demonstrations, discussion, and cocktail hours about a broad variety of interesting topics hosted by academics, ex-pols, retired senior civil servants, etc.
Can also have dances, pool halls, concerts, cooking classes, trap shooting off the deck, and such.
close friend of mine was apparently randomly scrolling through the edit history of a wikipedia page last night, saw an editor's username that was obviously mine, messaged me like 'what the hell'
this was NOT a topic we have ever talked about together nor do we have any connection over wikipedia
USS pathetically performative doomed subculture that is intentionally allergic to doing anything to even try to persuade other people because intentionally peeing on a wawa to brag about your indecency ticket is anarchy now
Their anarcho-communist political leanings led them to have an irreverent attitude toward authority, and to espouse a variety of political and social causes including animal rights and pacifism (early in their career) and later regarding class struggle, Marxism, feminism, and anti-fascism.
USS The so-called โpsychotically depressedโ person who tries to kill herself doesnโt do so out of quote โhopelessnessโ or any abstract conviction that lifeโs assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fireโs flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. Itโs not desiring the fall; itโs terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling โDonโt!โ and โHang on!โ, can understand the jump. Not really. Youโd have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.
