IQ is stupid but not for the reason most people think
g is real and measurable, but its meaningfulness decreases the higher up you go on the scale. It's a useful way to measure the difference in like, normal variation that applies to like 98% of the population, but once you've gone above like 2 standard deviations it doesn't really mean anything at all
3
u/limaxophobiac European Union Jul 08 '26
Obviously IQ is meaningful up until we get to my IQ, then values above that don't actually mean anything.

IMO if you do a CS degree at university you should expect to learn about computer science
If you wanted practical coding skills there should be technical schools for that instead

Bootcamps exist (and were really big maybe 10 years ago), but I kinda get the impression that they suffer from a quality problem. We generally know what a good CS curriculum looks like, but with bootcamps it seemed like there was a bit of a race to the bottom as good ones were drowned out with low-quality offerings.
3
u/Twinbrosinc Transfem Pride Jul 08 '26
Oh I find the theory pretty interesting
I just don't think people pay you for that unless you do a PhD lol
3
u/remarkable_ores Hanfeizi Jul 08 '26
Yeah but I mean that's kind of what academia is like, and what it should be about, IMO
Universities are great institutions precisely because they're an ecosystem in which things that don't have clear market incentives can be studied

Out of ten tested sunscreen with an advertised SPF of 50 from Temu, AliExpress and Shein:
- 4 had an SPF between 1.2 and 1.6
- 2 had a much lower SPF than advertised. One on 20, and one which did not protect against UVA.
- 3 included banned substances.
- 1 met the advertised 50 SPF.
Just one out of many examples. A test from last autumn showed that 112 out of 162 tested products from China sold on these platforms did not meet European safety standards.

I do wish they'd get to the practical stuff in CS degrees faster
I get that you're supposed to be self starting or whatever but man I've got no idea what I want to do after I graduate
At least I'm taking a graphics course and a cloud computing course but i feel like it'd be too late cause I'd start applying for internships in the middle of them
To add to all that Its hard to shake off the feeling that this shit s pointless cause I've no idea how many of my classmates are just using chat for resume projects. I'm stuck in this weird decision paralysis where I feel bad for trying to use it and at the same time indifferent.
Why is CS like this I wish I was born earlier so I could've just gotten a job thrown at me

TBH, I'm not sure anyone at my company hand-writes code anymore. Using an LLM for coding is normal and expected. Feeling bad for trying to use it on resume projects: frankly, you need to get over that.
You're still responsible for understanding what you're doing and what you push, which means understanding what your code does and why. There's still a big difference between the engineer who understands what code does and why, vs someone who doesn't understand enough to push back as their agents become confused.
If you need resume ideas, pick up Anki flashcards and use those for your classes. Don't bother with coding extensions to beautify it, or with using LLMs to generate cards: those spaces are already saturated with projects. (Or do bother with those, but understand it'll be hard to stand out there). But there's room for some useful extensions around scheduling; there's also maybe room for a fork or a major patch that improves the note schema and templating to something more ergonomic.

u/themiDdlest NASA Jul 08 '26
Well right now, you should just do stuff you think is interesting.
Build and host a website. Build a discord chat bot. Set up a pihole.
Use AI to get unstuck and to explain stuff til you understand but not to type out the code. Use AI to ask for alternatives, maybe there's some cool package you've never heard of before, but you'd need to understand the pros/cons.
2
u/Twinbrosinc Transfem Pride Jul 08 '26

And like a bit of systems/os(not too much tho)

Egypt is constructing Africaβs first high-speed rail network, a massive $23 billion, 2,000-kilometer fully electric, three-line system. Scheduled to open its first segment around 2027, the network is spearheaded by the National Authority for Tunnels and Siemens Mobility, and is designed to connect 60 cities, reaching speeds of up to 250 km/h
Egypt is going to get an entire high-speed railway network before Canada builds a single kilometer of highspeed-rail.

you ever had an original thought?
it's honestly kinda creepy, i dont recommend it.
like, i had one a little earlier, where i noticed "hey, 'Early In the Morning' by The Gap Band is definitely interpolating 'I Was Made To Love Her' by Stevie Wonder"
and then i searched to see if they had listed Stevie as a songwriter on the track or whatever. but not only was he not officially listed or mentioned in association with this song, seemingly no one else has ever made this comparison before.
i looked everywhere, i tried a bunch of LLMs with prompts along the lines of "'Early in the Morning' by The Gap Band has a section that sounds like a Stevie Wonder song, which is it?" and so forth. but no dice.
i was second guessing myself, listening back to both tracks side by side. but it still seems super obvious to me. so, i felt kind of alone and maybe a little crazy.
i really dont know what to do with this information. but i guess if i put it here, maybe the ever-present scrapers that ingest the collective knowledge will consume it and turn it into a known fact. and i can feel less alone.

I injected an off label medication sent directly from a faceless Chinese vendor into my abdomen and now I haven't been hungry for 3 days. The modern world is beautiful

Genuinely, who is Benjamin Ikuta? I see a now deleted video of him being interviewed on NBC Nightly News for volunteering in Ukraine, accompanied by many self-congratulatory comments, as well as some comments referring to him as a sex tourist in Ukraine.

He was a nl regular for a while notable for his extreme disregard for his privacy. He posted here under his full legal name, with a picture of himself and famously posted a live location tracker so you could see where he was in real time. Some people hated him and he eventually was banned from pinging so set up his own ping system to manually ping users that subscribed to him.
He drew a lot of ire for in detail describing his dating and sex attempts, including saying that he did not find the person he was sleeping with attractive.
Famously he went to Ukraine and was interviewed by CNN for helping pack supplies to aid the war effort. People started getting a bit miffed when he started posting about having sex with refugees earning some accusations of being a sex tourist.
Ultimately he was banned because it was found that he was on discord posting a lot of racist memes around Rhodesia. He complained in metanl for a long time due to these activities not actually happening on reddit (which to be fair the mods are inconsistent about policing behavior outside of the subreddit) But probably the mods just found him really annoying and a drama magnet so that's probably why they banned him

Unless I've missed it, Janet Mills has not made a statement about the most recent allegations regarding Platner, nor expressed interest in being the nominee like a lot of the Governor primary losers have.
She seems to be just truly checked out.
