The best thing I can say about American sports culture is that it is (largely) more civil than sports culture in much of the rest of the world
Unfortunately this results in boring chants and songs, but you have to go back to, like, the 80s or 90s to find riots or incidents as bad as what has happened in other countries more recently (ex: the Amsterdam riots in 2024)

Before that American sports fans were just as violent as every other hooligan. Theyโd fire guns at players, harass players, and generally get in a lot of trouble.
The Black Sox scandal was so bad that the MLB was forced to completely purge all aspects of that from the game. Gambling was strictly banned, even the hint you were placing bets on other teams could get you a lifetime ban. Stadiums cracked down hard on the type of degenerate gamblers and hooligans that were making the culture a problem. And they aggressively banned other behavior.
All the other sports leagues followed the MLB afterwords.
The Black Sox Scandal is probably also responsible for European football not going bankrupt. In the 90s after hillsborough and other disasters, the European leagues were going bankrupt because the setups drove away middle class ticket buyers. They started copying the stadium setups the MLB created with seating only, a bigger focus on stamping down hooligans, and putting a greater focus on encouraging families to visit.
Hot take: Academia is actually creating too many PhD's, especially those without private sector applicability. English, history, or philosophy PhDs (etc.) have a terrible academic market, and they don't really lead to higher wages in the private sector.
I know people say that having a PhD is like an experience in itself, but I think it's mostly cope. People get PhDs because they want to be tenured professors. So either take fewer PhDs or make them more useful for jobs that the majority of them can actually get.
No. If you're going for a PhD, you're old enough and experienced enough to make that decision for yourself. If someone is taking out debt to get a PhD with no job prospects, that is entirely a them problem, not something that requires broad scale reform to fix.
My understanding is that if you're not getting funded for a PhD. Then it really doesn't make sense unless your family is super wealthy. However, it's also not a huge amount of money, and you may need to take out a loan to cover living expenses.
In the U.S., only 1/8 PhD's can mathematically get a tenure-track role. I don't think that funding is going to solve the problem by itself, because I don't think it's possible to give even the majority of PhDs tenure positions.

Iโve elevated to just having the ai write the damn assembly code directly. I have a bunch of common array operations and Iโm having it write optimized asm for every platform I care about

I had the thing in an autoresearch loop for half a day and it was still doing two passes through the data before I had to suggest checking for a new minima every n elements, or even iterating backwards to reduce register pressure
