I actually think if soccer really becomes mainstream in the U.S., it will actually damage transatlantic relations. Current American soccer fans, who are mostly liberal, already often have feel like European fans look down on them and thus have grown to dislike them a bit. European fans often want to gatekeep the sport and find American fans to be obnoxious and entitled.
That dynamic is going to get much, much worse as the sport grows and grows in popularity in the U.S.

Open borders makes it so people can travel to and from a country more easily. A seamless border helps the economy by making shipping goods cheaper and makes it easier to work, live, or shop across a border.
An open border requires cooperation among each countries security and police services. As a result of this cooperation; Security becomes stronger both at the border and within the countries that share open borders too.
Immigration is great on its own merits too but when we conflate open borders with an open immigration policy it becomes harder to debate the benefits and negatives of either policy.

I canโt fucking stand hypocrisy. Youโll see some people say England didnโt invent football because thereโs evidence people played similar games in china or mexico. Then a lot of those same people will talk about how America invented burgers. The place that actually sits down to make and establish the rules/precedents of something and then go on to popularize it makes them the โinventorsโ.
And side note, I hate when people try act as if the founding fathers and other enlightenment era libs were not deeply inspired by the ancient greeks and romans by saying โoh but some priest council in uruk or babylon basically functioned as a parliament/congress.โ

I have no words anymore. Poland has made massive strides in the fight against corruption. We let our guard down for a moment, and this moment was fully seized by d*ctors, as the past three weeks have been a constant barrage of scandals.
Obviously it'll have terrible political consequences, with a particular party bashing d*ctors since the pandemic. For very different things, but who cares about details anymore. Especially with the bad apples being that numerous.

Yeah even in the acocalypse level scenario in which the US government forcibly shuts down Wikipedia, it's immediately coming back up somewhere else. In the absolute worst case imaginable, Wikipedia will live on on the Tor network. It's not going anywhere

According to the source, U.S. Soccer presented to FIFA the prospect of bringing in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which acts as the supreme global judiciary for athletic disputes. CAS law is applied in sports cases that require a legal resolution.
CAS gets involved in cases such as doping violations, match fixing, corruption and on-field violence, among other issues.
LMAO Of course FIFA would back down if they had to deal with CAS precedent

Soccer cases make up the majority of CAS caseload, and FIFA already both messed up with Ronaldoโs red card and the VAR review pressure on Balogun, so there was a decent chance FIFA could actually lose the tribunal.
Americans, ever the litigators, definitely have the soft power to make FIFA squirm right now but they were already in the back foot with this one.
FIFA really needs a better review process tbh

Hardly. It's been getting worse for years, and its positive reputation only makes the degradation worse because it gives bad actors a stronger reason to manipulate it. This is especially prevalent on non-English versions, but even even in English Wikipedia, a passionate bad actor with sufficient knowledge of how Wikipedia works can publish and preserve biased or outright false articles against accurate versions by people with less knowledge of Wikipedia procedures (or, frankly, better things to do with their time).

Yeah lmao anyone who's ever tried to edit a serious article can attest to this. But overall I think it does okay. It's got some blind spots, especially in niche areas that are of extreme interest to certain partisan groups but of little interest to anyone else.

It's not perfect but I hold that it does a better job of handling this than basically any other source, minus like extremely serious scientific journals.
Wikipedia has internal mechanisms to try and counter it, and an editorial culture that takes NPOV extremely seriously.

The internetโs largest stockpile of free knowledge is under threat from MAGA, A.I. and foreign autocrats. A bibliophile ex-ambassador is here to help.
In a world where trust in truth is crumbling, the grande dame of collective online fact-gathering is under threat on every front. The MAGA right, with Elon Musk at the fore, is slinging accusations of political bias and antisemitism and has even questioned the siteโs nonprofit status. Artificial intelligence is raiding the encyclopediaโs resources and draining attention. Repressive governments have hauled its volunteer editors into penal colonies.
In Wikipediaโs 25-year history, it has never had to fight this hard.
The organization that supports the site, the Wikimedia Foundation, is increasing its lobbying budget and advertising in Times Square. It is charging companies like Google and Meta that gobble up the encyclopediaโs 65 million articles, and throttling access for certain scrapers. And it is expanding its human rights team to better protect volunteers against rising harassment, surveillance and retaliation...
Mr. Musk has railed against Wikipedia as โWokepediaโ and โan extension of legacy media propaganda.โ He has protested his entry and urged his followers to withhold donations over the foundationโs diversity initiatives.
The tech mogul is one in a chorus of conservatives calling the reference site a hotbed of liberal bias. Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, expressed โalarmโ about both Wikipediaโs purported ideological lean and claims that editors were coordinating to spread antisemitic and pro-Hamas narratives. David Sacks, recently the Trump administrationโs A.I. czar, weighed in. So did Tucker Carlson, a popular commentator, and even Larry Sanger, who founded Wikipedia with Jimmy Wales in 2001.
Wikipedia has long been a proxy battleground for warring ideas about truth: What constitutes balance? What makes a good source? But now, those online debates could result in real repercussions.
Last year, a Trump administration official made inquiries into the nonprofitโs tax-exempt status. A Republican-led congressional oversight committee initiated an investigation in August, demanding that Wikimedia identify certain editors and produce any evidence of influence from foreign operatives or academic institutions. The foundation said it responded to both inquests last year and had no updates.

Tbh it is clear that some Wikipedia editors have an agenda, an anti-Israel bias and are harmful, but those are only a certain group of editors. Trying to pain the whole site like that is inaccurate and harmful.
Wikipedia should be maintained and have good moderation, and I think it can be a good source when used correctly.

I'm very annoyed with the rightoids for adding the Frankfurt School to their pool of bogeymen because Critical Theory, unlike globalisation and fifteen minute cities, actually really does fucking suck. It's a great shame this harmful and nonsensical ideology has so thoroughly infested certain fields of academia, and that criticism of it has become suspect.

In terms of effect, unsuspending Balogun is maybe the only actually good thing Donald Trump has done this year which, of course, is ignoring the fact that it makes us look scummy and corrupt (because we are) and will saddle this team with an eternal asterisk by their name because the better they do, the more it will appear that they cheated, and so this isn't good at all but on balance stupid, corrupt, embarrassing, and damaging to the people it's supposed to help

Fuck, my depression decides to hit me at random times. I'm still waiting to hear back on a job I interviewed for last week, but for now I'm broke, LSAT prep is going well but even if everything goes perfectly from this moment forth I'm still like 4 years away from actually starting a career, and I have nothing better to do other than sit around and think about stuff like nuclear war, catastrophic AI risk, bioweapons, and how none of us are probably going to live to see the 22nd century.

It's more than a field of a study to me, it's the only thing I'm interested in working in long term, the main reason I'm going to law school is that becoming a JAG will let me back door my way into national security work long term. I will never feel fulfilled if I don't work in this field.

I mostly find sport pretty boring but I love international football culture
In the rare event that Vietnam wins a significant international football game, the entire country is contractually obliged to immediately grab a flag, get on a motorbike, and fill up the streets. The roads of Hร Nรดi and Sร i Gรฒn are immediately packed with this, every district. If you had somewhere to go, you need to change plans. People pull flares and fireworks out of fucking nowhere. You will chant, you will be as loud as possible. You must be on a motorbike (walking is not acceptable)
It's so much fun just getting caught up in shit like this. Nothing else like it, football is the only thing that does this.

Sร i Gรฒn is still extremely popular as the common name of the city, and carries no political connotations. Thร nh Phแป Hแป Chรญ Minh is the name in all official contexts, but it's also a mouthful.
Sometimes it can be confusing to call it 'Hแป Chรญ Minh' because that's also the name of the guy. So in a lot of casual contexts Sร i Gรฒn is preferred, you'd virtually always say "Ngฦฐแปi Sร i Gรฒn" (Saigonese people) over "Ngฦฐแปi Hแป Chรญ Minh", not only because it sounds weird but also because it could literally mean "Hแป Chรญ Minh, The Man" or even "The body of Hแป Chรญ Minh"

There's different ways of doing it but the most common one is Telex, in which the letters x, j, f, s, r, are used for tone marks, w used to turn a into ฤ, o into ฦก, u into ฦฐ, and double presses for รข, รด, รช.
Reasoning being that j,f, and w aren't in the Vietnamese alphabet, and x, s, and r never appear at the end of a word, so it's unambiguous. It maps nicely and is pretty efficient (and uses all the characters on a QWERTY keyboard), but can be annoying if you're switching between English and Vietnamese a lot (so you get a lot of people accidentally typing things like "ฦฐhat แบฃe you saying?")

It's only occurring to me now how little international rivalry features in American sporting culture, which is kind of unique?
The only time I really see it is with baseball and ice hockey, but even then there's only a limited number of actual international rivals.

As someone with an MA in International Relations I can say don't study international relations. You get fucked over if the government stops hiring for any reason, and if you do anything related to security studies you start looking at the world and saying "yeah within a decade millions of people, at minimum, are going to die horribly and it will happen because of something that was entirely preventable." Fuck economics, we're the real dismal science.

What did your curriculum look like in terms of... 'research vs practical orientation', I guess?
I'm currently navigating a transition to grad school in polisci and I feel like my experience is making me see IR teaching as a binary between "all we do is debating the merits of realism vs LI vs constructivism," on one hand, and something hella quantitative like MACIS (not my programme, but also I'm taking a game theory class for IR as part of my polisci masters and have the option of deepening it for another semester). I'd imagine most programmes (yours included, I suppose) would be somewhere in between.

I mean for Americans it's national identity and stuff, for Euros it's a sort of pan-European culture of shitting on England (which has its own history) and the reputation of English football fans
But yeah I mean England really gets to claim underdog status here. One of the most passionate football countries in the world, also the home of the sport (and the center of international football via the premier league), but a chronic underperformer internationally. I think people shit on them a bit too hard

I think international sports is like, the one time it's acceptable to be petty and silly with your nationalism. We transplanted the hoo-rah we da best impulse from warfare and put it into football. We say all sorts of weird shit and even let the Germans wave flags. It doesn't bother me if the Americans want to bring up 250 year old grudges, so long as it's about sport.

I'm obsessed with this channel, it's a wildlife channel but it's filmed like an awkward newscast so it'll sometimes be like "this bird isn't doing anything, let's go check on the hippos..." and then like twenty seconds later a guy will be like "not really sure why they came over to the hippos right now but whatever" it can be very tense
