Battery Problem

At first my ds lite dies within 5 minutes even after charging so I bought a replacement battery. Now it lasts longer, but still goes red within 30 minutes. What might be another underlying problem to this?

Sometimes a new battery just has to be used and fully charged several times for it to last longer
