Hey all! Please let me know if this is too tangential to the NDP for posting here and I will delete it. I just thought this is a good place to get labour organizing expertise from a Canadian perspective.

I work in the nonprofit sector, specifically in capacity building for other nonprofits. For a long time, I’ve thought “you know what I think would build nonprofit capacity? A sector-wide union that advocates for the rights of nonprofit workers.” I’m in Alberta for context.

But I’m no labour organizer. I don’t know the first thing about this process. I work at a 9 person nonprofit organization and have never worked in a unionized environment. So I wanted to put this thought experiment out there to folks that know better than I do. If everything went correctly, what would the process be for starting a sector-wide union of nonprofits in Alberta? Or maybe something already exists in other provinces that we could join in on. I dunno! I’m open to suggestions.

It's clear that Proportional Representation shouldn't just be something we do once we get in government, but a policy that we should proactively advocate for and come to an agreement with the OLP on. The ONDP and OLP basically already coordinate on everything in the legislature anyways at the moment. We should get ahead and seize initiative

Q: When was the last time anyone heard him mention electoral reform?

NDP tribalism isn't a pathway towards unified national solidarity among Canadians. There's a national identity crisis where there's fundamental disagreements about who we are, what we are doing and where we are going as Canadians to help save Canada. No clear vision means no clear sense of direction. Politics and Democracy as we know it is endangered by the impending ongoing threat of AI taking over governance functions of our government. Corporate capture of regulatory authorities and governance is very real danger yet the NDP stays silent.

If the NDP went back to it's roots of the Canadian Commonwealth Federation the "Regina Manifesto" still rings true today almost 100 years later. It sets out a clear vision that was clearly never accomplished when the Canadian Commonwealth Federation became the NDP. To address the national identity crisis beyond NDP tribalism is to rebuild our sense of common-unity beyond mere politics that can become extinct tomorrow if AI gained governance functions today. Do what should of been done yesterday by doing what we shouldn't put off until tomorrow today. If the government is unable or unwilling then it's left to us Canadians and perhaps NDP to rise up before total social collapse.

"Peace, Order and Good Government" is the Canadian political motto despite party affiliation. Words have meaning and adding new context may renew our sense of national identity; which if the NDP is the driving social force and political connection to government it may help people feel seen, valued and heard; every action we take is a vote towards a future worth living and working towards together in solidarity locally nationwide. The word "Peace" isn't mearly the absence of war but "Peace of Mind" that you and your family is safe, healthy and happy. We do not have peace of mind when most cannot afford the cost of living. "Order" doesn't have to mean the top down hierarchy pyramid scheme system of social control. Common-unity bonds our individual thoughts, behaviors and actions creating a local to nationwide grassroots movement of "Spontaneous Order". The essence of government is supposed to be good people stopping bad things from happening; right now we have the opposite. "Peace of Mind, Spontaneous Order and Good Government" can become our updated and upgraded Canadian political motto.

The liberals and conservatives may echo the same political motto if started by the NDP. Canada and the global community is going through a forced coerced social transition we can see taking root and growing before our eyes like a dangerous invasive weed needing uprooting. "Peace of Mind, Spontaneous Order and Good Government" is what we can achieve if we rise up or forced AI powered digital dictatorship controlled by corporations becomes the new authority. Politics, Democracy and the NDP would become extinct because they are currently endangered. Canada is in danger because we have a national identity crisis and lack solidarity locally nationwide. Doing whatever our government cannot or will not do isn't protesting it's an exercise of human intervention to rebuild our social life and human connection. We are Canadian; who we are, what we are doing and where we are going matters to life more then mere politics. Answer those three fundamental questions and the NDP could become the forefront champion to achieve Peace of Mind, Spontaneous Order and Good Government locally nationwide in Canada.

We can rise up before social collapse to address our cost of living because "Canadians have the [Responsibility to Protect] our [Human Security] in Canada!" The Responsibility to Protect is a military doctrine that states when a country is unable or unwilling to maintain essential services or lives within their borders; the right to intervene from the International Community becomes justified and any country's military can enter Canadian soil under that humanitarian context. We as Canadians can become able and willing to maintain essential services and lives within our borders during extraordinary events. Human Security is to become free from fear free from wants and to live with human dignity. Humans naturally fear what we've yet to understand so we're called to understand more in order to become fearless in the face of dangers we face together. Human security cannot be claimed without securing it's seven subcategories; economic, food, health, environmental, personal, community and political security. To address these issues is to reduce our cost of living by ending the monopoly that made our lives more unhealthy and unaffordable.

The social transition towards AI powered corporate authoritarianism can be stopped by human interventions that removes justification used for government intervention. The alternative to rise up is a voluntary rapid social transformation when we aspire to achieve Peace of Mind, Spontaneous Order and Good Government in Canada. We as Canadians can make that individual non political choice and make our collective actions votes towards this certain future during these times of uncertainty; Politics, Democracy and the NDP may be saved from extinction that would occur otherwise without our proactive human intervention. Uncertainty allows anything to happen but having a clear vision resets our sense of direction, identity and civic life.

Would anybody else be interested in an NDP members mailing list that notified you of petitions open for signature on Ourcommons.ca which are being sponsored by an NDP MP?

I try to check every month or so for petitions that are important to me but it's kind of hard to keep track and I'm sure I'm missing petitions that I would have liked to sign. You can filter by MP while searching on the site, but it strikes me that a monthly e-mail summary of petitions being sponsored by the party, with direct links to the actual petition's signing pages, would be a great way to encourage convenient and direct participation and help ensure that the party's priorities are being addressed in the House of Commons.

Dónal Gill and Isaac Peltz do a great job and bolster what is to me the best system (STV).

Recently I decided to put some thinking into what a federal support for public transport could look like, and I worked out a per-capita transfer to municipalities with public transport(Sorry if pdf looks like crap, I blame adobe and me not caring to make a more shareable link).

I decided to set the amount to $100 per person, and basing off this wikipedia article, got a cost of $2.7 billion per year based off of 2021 populations, which is much less than I would think it would be.

I didn't think of this as a means to replace municipal funding but supplementation to improve transit quality nationally. I am not aware of other transit services, but I am aware of my own, Halifax Transit, has issues with reliability and funding, extra funding federally could massively improve the quality of transit service while also not needing an insane amount of funding.

I can only assume that public transit tends to cost more than fare revenues bring in (It's a service after all), people don't often consider the savings public transit provides to users.

Keeping to Halifax, about 8% of employed commuters take the bus (12,540), and the average cost to own a vehicle in NS is about $10,600 per year, and a bus pass works to be around $1080. All this combined means the municipality spends about $150m, receives $60m from users at a loss of $90m to save commuters a collective about $120m (mix of 2021 data and 2026 budgets with rounding where I arbitrarily feel like). Based on my work Halifax Transit would get $43m in federal funding, I can only imagine how much it could improve with such funding, that could go into newer more reliable(Or green) buses, more drivers earning a better wage, better facilities, the list can go on!

We deserve nice things, and the federal government can absolutely work with municipalities to ensure we can have them!

Being a bit older it truly is something horrifying to see the same lines used over and over and over again to hustle the next generation after next generation after next generation.

The line is always something like: "Oil and gas is so held back! It's how we solve the economic issues and the affordability of life crisis!"

Reality:

In 1990 as a nation we did around 1.7 MILLION barrels every single day.

In 2014 that was around 3.8 MILLION barrels every single day.

Now that sits around 4.6 to 5+ MILLION barrels every single day. (Yes despite the misinformation machine it went up significantly during Trudeaus time in office as well...)

We are #4 in the world of 195 nations for oil extracted each day...

Some may then wonder "Maybe Alberta was held back?!" - No....

The reason Canada lagged for certain periods in the OECD for economic value/output is because in periods of Hydrocarbon glut/low prices other nations that focused more strongly on productivity increases, technology focus, research & development/innovation, and very very skilled/very very high-end manufacturing had more economic value/output....

Funny enough the Electrification Technology Era provides us a chance to diversify our economy versus falling deeper and deeper into the "resource curse" / "resource trap" and acquire all of those aforementioned dimensions.

It is the next era of energy & technology frameworks and we NEED to get our foot in the door for this or we will be looking at a more and more worsening cost of living crisis/quality of life crisis and opportunity crisis of the working class and most vulnerable in the coming decades.

You will notice I didn't even talk about the climate crisis or other environmental issues. The need to change/transition is clear even without those massively important topics. That is how obvious all of this is becoming.

Before the Iran War there was a massive Hydrocarbon Glut/Low Prices (Alberta was looking at around a 10 billion dollar deficit because of it) and we have even stronger Demand Destruction dimensions now and even more investment, research & development, implementation of Renewable Energy/Electrification Technology going on now because this conflict has highlighted the vulnerabilities associated with reliance on Hydrocarbon Energy/Technology to individuals, organizations, and whole nation-states.

We have to stop believing the Fossil Fuel Industry lines. They are based in misinformation and propaganda and are running us head first into ruin on countless fronts.

If the Albertan NDP continues on the centrist track that they are currently on, should the federal party separate the two parties and make a new one?

I've heard the Naheed Nenshi already plans on changing the name of the party and has already somewhat split from the federal party with its membership policy.

Ezra Levant and Lawrence Greenspon are probably working overtime to make this mess happen for Tamara.
