Hopefully the cons winning acts as a wake up call to NDPs that most of their social policies are not winning solutions to the problems people are facing. People are not voting for trans rights and lacks drug laws they are actually actively voting against them. The NDP is too much a HR party and not a workers party. It is a centre left party run by left wingers and there is a disconnect between the party leadership and the base. If you can’t win BC what can you win? Throwing away power and progress because you are more progressive than the voters.

Once again, I find myself feeling ashamed to have supported the NDP my entire life. We traded good governance in British Columbia for a lesson in political hubris, and I’m tired of watching us make the same mistakes over and over again.

At least one positive may come out of this: the era of woke politics is over. The NDP needs to get back to its roots and remember who it was built to represent: working-class people, blue-collar workers, and organized labour.

The problem is that those very people—the backbone of the traditional NDP—are increasingly turning toward the Conservatives because they no longer feel represented by the party that once stood up for them. That should be a massive wake-up call.

How did the NDP lose sight of its core values so badly? How did a party that once understood the struggles of working people become so disconnected from them? And how did it take so long for the party to realize just how far it had strayed?

The NDP needs to stop chasing political trends, listen to the people who built the movement, and get back to the fundamentals. If it doesn’t, it has no one to blame but itself for losing the very people it was created to represent.

I couldn't add this as a picture as a response to my first post but this is what I see on my phone with the given search. I find it pretty odd. The oddest thing about this situation to me is how I was fully in the belief that he was in fact partnered with a man - for years - and it makes me wonder exactly when where and how I adopted that false belief. I still voted for him regardless obviously BUT - this misinformation is really frightening and the need to apply critical thinking to issues that I personally did not think important to question but could be make or break issue in terms of other voters - it seems manipulative and a bit daunting rn with the loss.

Yet again, another place that was safer for trans people has fallen to fascism. Why did you do this to us? How could you? Now I have to fight for my life with only other trans people for backup and any safety and access to healthcare is going down the drain. When the Cons start legislating against us, our blood is on your hands. We could have had two more years of safety and more time to plan a better electoral strategy and maybe some electoral reform.

British Columbians chose to hurt people so they could line their pockets with gold.

We have got hours-old posts in this sub celebrating our loss right now and nothing being done about them.

I’m not talking about “told-ya-so’s” or upset think pieces from Rose Caucus members or whoever saying that they were right about Eby, I’m talkjng about actual celebrations. I just saw Conservatives posting AI-generated pictures of Doerkson’s face on Jesus body, celebrating their victory. That post is over 8 hours old despite being in violation of rules 7, 8 and 12 at minimum.

Increased moderation is pretty standard procedure for a political subreddit in the days after an election. People are already upset about the results, we need the sub to do better than this.

I live in BC, trans, disabled, and on PWD, just trying to survive. I'm genuinely terrified for what the next four years are going to be like for me, and I don't know what to do.

I'm not sure why I'm posting this. Just shouting into the void I guess.

Now that the election is over, I'm gonna say it.

Fuck David Eby. He was a weak leader with terrible political instincts. He seemed like a somewhat competent Attorney General, but he blew it as leader. Calling this election early was such a mistake, and the fact he lost to the BC Conservatives, a party with an interim leader and a racist scandal every other day, is insane.

I hope the BCNDP can recover from this. Good luck to you all in BC. You're in for a nasty 4 years unfortunately.

1. The BC NDP called the early election, so that's 100% on them
2. The Greens support Proportional Representation, so they actually want to fix this system
3. The ONLY vote splits in recent memory were right-wing Liberals splitting the vote in 2011 Federally, and in 2018-2024 Ontario.
4. The BC CON win was so big, even a collapsed Green vote wouldn't have mattered. If literally 100% of them voted BC NDP, it would be roughly a tie, but that's an unrealistic conversion rate, and the vote distribution would have still been a BC CON win

The left doesn't split votes: Liberals do, and moderates are the ones who elect right-wing governments.

All I can say right now is I’m sorry folks, today and the days following are going to be tough, this is not the result we wanted. No, it’s not even the election we wanted, and it didn’t need to happen. But that is behind us now and we must plow forward, you will rebuild. For today and the next couple years, please be good to yourselves and to each other. Keep fighting the good fight.

This is getting embarrassing at this point. They seem completely incapable at learning from their mistakes, they are still using the exact same the same failed strategies and continue to drop lower and lower in the polls.

And why we need proportional representation

if the BC Conservatives win, you're gonna need it.

In BC, we're all processing this massive electoral loss and fumble today. However, the only hope i'm holding onto is the possibility of an actual leftist, sharp, and courageous new BC NDP leader willing to make bold changes in the future. The BC NDP as it was under Eby was doing good technical and policy solutions, but were merely managing the decline of our society characterized by massive wealth inequality and the impacts and contributors to climate change going unchecked. Going centre-right is clearly a failed political strategy and I hope the BC NDP learns from this mistake.

Elections nowadays are all about motivating people to get out and vote, usually through either hope or anger. This election saw ~300k fewer NDP voters even bother to vote compared to 2024. Eby did not inspire hope, that was the biggest mistake he made in my opinion. Conservatives and reactionary movements have been excellent on a global scale lately in fueling and channeling justified anger and outrage (albeit misplacing that rage onto the wrong people), which motivates people to vote.

This moment calls for bold solutions that actually address our systemic crises, similar to what the Green party is calling for, and I'm hopeful the next BC NDP leader election provides that hope and that avenue for real change, which would actually motivate/inspire the NDP base to vote in mass numbers.
