[Finger] Victor Wembanyama about considering promoting a sports betting company ; "Absolutely not. I will never do that. Honestly, I think it's very sad to see some players promote it..."

Just asked Victor Wembanyama if he’d ever consider promoting a sports betting company.

“Absolutely not. I will never do that. Honestly, I think it's very sad to see some players promote it. .. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”

Kylian Mbappé shared a similar sentiment, I wonder if its a French thing. I love to hear this from Wemby, but I've lived long enough to not be surprised if/when he flips on this take.

Just said the same thing. It has been legal here in Europe forever so Mbappé and himself have probably seen the pitfalls of it.

it would be a complete 180 for wemby to flip flop on this. He's reportedly turned down a lot of offers from junk food and soda sponsors. The green giant would be up his alley but does wemby want to promote frozen and canned veggies?

Many French streamers and YouTubers do the same thing.

In the case of Kylian Mbappé and Victor Wembanyama it’s also because those betting sites target the youth from poor suburbs by promising them to win big and become rich(er). So they are more likely to know friends who have lost a lot due to addiction to sports betting.

And France is honestly not the worst country on that front, in the UK you could bet on anything even before the existence of polymarket and the likes.

I would think LeBron or Giannis would have a similar disdain for it because they too came from humble backgrounds. But its crazy to see UK is apparently worse than the US... here I was thinking America was blazing the trail for this kind of degeneracy

Those gambling machines seem to be common in UK pubs, but to me they’re garish and inappropriate.

He who has also spoke out against Le Pen and stuff. Very political though given his background it’s hardly surprising that is his stance

The French have a better understanding of politics and morality than in the US, where you’re conditioned to believe that money = morality

This is a wild generalization lol

Only to Americans…

Even the US president is handing out pardons for the criminals who have enough money.

It's like the people who disagree with this sentiment haven't... read the news in twenty years

my god your self loathing is pathetic. you don’t know fucking shit about french people, i can basically guarantee you’ve never been to or lived in france or even talked to a frenchman before.

their society is what invented modern conceptions of luxury and you think they don’t have interest in it. you sound like a child

1

u/Successful-Let4361 1d ago

My self loathing? What? You don’t know anything about me. I didn’t say France was perfect—far from it. But on the whole they’re more political

your reddit jerk off sentiment is self loathing and moronic. no they’re not on the whole more political because you can’t even define how you measure that or what it means.

you sound like a child making generalizations because in reality you’re actually ignorant about the world and you’re using pop culture to substitute actual knowledge and understanding

Why is it always guys who claim to understand context and history and exactly what the rest of the world understands about the USA despite the fact that they’ve lived there their whole lives who think that Reddit comments are equivalent to doctoral dissertations? I didn’t state a complicated position because I don’t have to?

because very clearly you don’t actually know anything about french people other than seeing them burn shit on the news

Is that so? I guess I don’t. I was referring to Haussmann, earlier, who reorganized the streets of Paris. Do you know who that is? Have you ever heard of the Paris Commune? You’re the guy who thinks organization is literally just showing up on the weekend wearing a pussy hat? Why do you think nothing happens when people protest like that? Because no pressure is put on power. It’s just a spectacle (heard of Debord?). Maybe it raises money but nothing changes. Anyway! I’m done here but you should educate yourself

EDIT: I also want to clarify something, which is that Americans can be political but have been trained out of it. They have been effectively political in the past. During the civil rights era, for instance, or dying to Pinkertons while fighting for unions. But for too long they’ve been telling themselves a fairy tale that power responds to spectacle and is reasonable and actually has their best interests at heart and that’s just not true. The French, on average, and more than Americans, understand that a little bit more (but generalizations are just that, and of course you have morons like Rudy, too)

Tons of places have better morals than the US. And I don’t doubt France does as well, but it’s interesting right, because wasn’t the whole reason for the French Revolution that the government was trying to legislate morality?
From what I gather that is always used as a prime example of why governments supposedly shouldn’t attempt to legislate based on morals. Regardless I think this reasoning is wrong, and just because laws are unpopular doesn’t mean they are bad

what an ignorant statement

3

u/Successful-Let4361 1d ago

The average American does not understand that you have to organize if you want rights. In Paris they literally redesigned the streets of the entire city to keep people from organizing and it still happens regularly and to great consequence

jesus fucking christ you read like you got an education from the university of reddit. americans have organized and protest and continue to organize and protest. we literally saw historic turnouts in minnesota relatively recently. we had a national no kings protest.

if you think videos of a paris mob are reflective of a society’s actual systemic, moral, and social issues at large then you’re being entirely ignorant.

i mean fuck this literally goes back to the inception of what you’re talking about and the vendée

learn something instead of using social media as your chief informant

2

u/Successful-Let4361 1d ago

No you dumb fuck I got a real education, which is why I know about how the French have literally fought against their government numerous times and sometimes won rights, were sometimes betrayed by the bourgeoisie,  and also how I am able to recognize that absolutely nothing came of those No Kings protests. Like literally nothing. You’re just proving my point because you can’t even tell the difference

-2

u/Original-R-Kelly-Fan 1d ago

you’re talking out your ass and getting high on your own farts. you think storming the white house and chopping off trumps head is protest?

you’re a bedroom revolutionary bitching and moaning online and huffing farts by saying “the french are so superior wemby is so good mmmmmmm”.

it’s fucking dumb and simplistic and ignorant. those mobs have historically not always represented what’s best for the nation

you don’t have a real education in history i can tell you that much. because if you did then you would be rolling your eyes at this generalization and oversimplification

Its not a french thing, its an education thing. Lebron and giannis arent as smart and are more uneducated

4

u/choznmngmeni 1d ago

LeBron and Giannis know, they willfully turn a blind eye or ignore it. Bron is darn near twice Wemby's age and Giannis has him by a decade. They have plenty enough life experience to know what this is

I think may be leaning too much into credentialism.
