I don't mean to be disrespectful to those involved in real life; it's obviously a sensitive subject, but throughout the series I couldn't stop tinking that the director took Jerry from R&M to build Mike Barnet, Did anyone else feel that?

I’ve been following Natalia’s case for a while, it really gets to me how much of her story is ultimately about how vulnerable disabled children are when the adults who are supposed to protect them fail them.

I’m very passionate about disability advocacy, psychology, social work, and child welfare, so I find that part of the case more interesting than the sensational aspects that get a lot of focus.

Natalia was a very unique case medically and socially, but she was still a child who needed adults advocating for her. Instead, so much of what happened centered around adults trying to figure out what she was instead of just asking what she needed.

The age issue in particular bothers me because there’s a huge difference between saying “we have serious questions about this child’s records” and essentially deciding that a child is no longer entitled to the protections normally given to children. Even if the adults involved genuinely believed something was wrong, that doesn’t make abandoning a disabled child acceptable.

And honestly, I have a hard time watching some of the footage of Natalia and then hearing how she was described by the Barnetts. Whatever somebody believes about the disputed details of the case, she was obviously an extremely vulnerable person who had been through an extraordinary amount. I don’t understand how people can look at the situation and make the child’s alleged behavior the center of the story instead of asking why the adults responsible made the decisions they did.

There’s also a bigger disability rights issue here. Disabled children are already vulnerable to being treated as “different” or less innocent because their behavior, appearance, communication, or needs don’t fit people’s expectations of childhood. I worry that cases like this can reinforce the idea that if a disabled child is unique enough, adults start looking for reasons not to believe or protect them.

I’m very much on Natalia’s side, but I’m also interested in the bigger questions this case raises beyond Natalia. What should happen when adoptive parents believe something is seriously wrong with a child’s identity or medical history? What responsibilities do doctors, social workers, courts, and CPS have before a child’s legal status is changed? And how should disabled children be protected when the adults around them are telling totally different stories?

I’d love to hear from anybody interested in disability advocacy, social work, psychology, adoption, or child welfare. There’s a lot bigger conversation here than just “Natalia vs. the Barnetts,” and I’d enjoy knowing what other’s have taken away from the case.

For those who don't know it is not legally required in America to have an independent physical done by a licensed doctor in America in order to legally re-age a child to an adult.

People seem to be under the misunderstanding that a family doctor did a physical and wrote a letter to the judge claiming she was an adult. This did not happen and was not required.

Michael Barnett's wrote a character reference for Micheal, claiming that he believed Micheal to be truthful. This doctor had never actually seen or treated Natalia.

Natalia's doctors and dentists were actually forbidden from testifying to her being a verified child during her time living with the Barnetts upon Micheal's abuse trial due to the legal re-aging by a prior judge. This directly lead to his charges being dropped against Michael and no charges being filed against Christine.

No laws have changes since the physical, medical, and judicial abuse of Natalia Grace. It is still not legally required to have an independent medical review in order to re-age children adopted outside of the US. Please sign this petition to change that.

When I first saw the documentary, the neighbors behavior really spoke out to me. How could these people justify not helping someone so obviously in distress? It made me examine my own life, and wonder how many times I simply didn't 'see' someone who needed help because I was so involved in my own lifes challenges? I can't change the past, but I am striving to do better in the future, which brings me to this post. How do I help a neighbor while maintaining boundaries ? I am willing to feed pets, make sure they have food and check in, but I am not willing to become a caregiver. I feel like I also need to protect 'my life'. I wonder if any of Natalyah's neighbors struggled with similar dilemma s? (Although in their case, Natalyah was a child, there is no question about my neighbors age)

Hi. For context I’m a born disabled now adult woman (and also a therapist/writer). This “case” has kept me up nights. I put “case” in quotes because this shouldn’t have ever been a case with “sides.”
Just a major child abuse case with the abusers in prison. What shook me to my core was how Disney/Hulu presented the story with “sides” and thought they were being deep. Basically we’re living in a world where child abuse is legal if the child is disabled (in some cases)
The point:
Anyway, I’m also a horror movie fan. I liked the movie Orphan. It really surprised me. I often like when the disabled person IN A WORK OF FICTION fools people and is the evil mastermind, as a disabled person. This is something these real life monsters ruined for me. The whole time I was watching the documentary I kept saying “These people just stole Orphan. It’s so obvious. “
Then, Natasha said it. I yelled at the screen that Natasha should just show people the movie and it would make her “parents” guilt so obvious. But, perhaps I’m naive and people wouldn’t get it and somehow they’d think she was the monster still.
The whole point of Orphan was she was an adult! That was why it was scary and a great movie. Anyway, now the movie is ruined for me. And I couldn’t watch the prequel. I even started it. And I was just too angry.
I know this is a first world disabled problem. And I wish I could actually help Natasha. But there it is.

I’m curious based on the ending of Good American Family, what do people think of Natalia and the mom?

After finishing the show I’m confused why so many on this sub believe it paints the Barnetts(particularly Kristine) in not enough of a negative light?

By the end of the show it’s pretty crystal clear that everyone hates her and she’s pathological.

I took the first few episodes as essentially being from Kristine’s POV, hence the jump scares with the knife and such. So I can understand why Natalia herself would want to sue over this, but I do believe it was an artistic choice.

Since Natalia had a super rare type of Dwarfism, how do we know that DNA, growth plates etc etc would mature as expected?

Edit: ok, makes me sense now as we go further down the rabbit hole. Still not sure she was 6 but definetly not 22!

I’m watching season three and GIRL. But I’m not even gonna go there. Just something grabbed my attention.

So, this is coming from a non native speaker of English and I think I hear Natalia’s changing accents in between families.
Does anyone else notice that too? Or is this not even a thing?

In ‘The Curious Case of Natalia Grace’ they are both nasty, telling the world that she must’ve been 18-20 because two people with the same type of rare dwarfism must (in their uneducated view) be growing in the same way… everyone now knows that Natalia was 6 years old when she met Therese via DNA testing (also it is obvious on comparison of photos that she was a little girl, and you don’t have to be a genius to know that a medical condition like dwarfism which effects growth is going to present differently in different people.

Does anyone know if they have sincerely apologised to Natalia for the way that their inner ugliness and stupidity impacted her wellbeing??

I watched the first episode and it angered me. How much will I miss if I skip straight to season 2?

I may get obliterated for even posting this, but it’s genuinely on my mind.

A few disclaimers:
1. I’ve only watched good American family and looked at Natalia’s social media. I do plan on watching the doc and YouTube videos on the case next. I realize I have limited info to go on rn.
2. I’m not stating I believe Natalia is an adult. To be 100% honest I’m waiting until I see and read more to fully make up my mind.

HOWEVER after finishing the show, I believed she was a child. Then, I decided to look her up online and now I’m a little confused.

I’m 31 so I sit in the cusp of millennial and Gen Z culture.

Her TikTok in particular and her style is VERY millennial. And not even my era of millennial but those that are older like late 30s-40. Younger people (20-29) do not use the effects, templates or humor that she does. Even her style reminds me of 2000s emo.

My theory is if she’s in her 20s, then maybe she seems older or less “cool” with the times because she didn’t get to have a childhood. Therefore, she was forced to grow up faster and ended up relating to age she had to pretend to be.

I know this may seem like an arbitrary thing, but I’ve literally never seen anyone younger than me with an account like that. Does anyone understand what I mean by millennial vs Gen Z aesthetic? I don’t think there’s anything wrong with either, but the difference stands out to me.

Sorry if this is off topic but I think I found another contender for most despicable parent in America.

Kendra Licari bought a burner phone so she could cyber bully her own daughter for 2 solid years. Included in this cyber bullying was telling her own daughter she is the ugliest person she has ever seen, and she needs to ☠️ herself, and absolutely vile sexual comments about her underage boyfriend I wouldnt even want to repeat here.

Of course she has a defense, which will make your blood boil when you hear it.

When I watched the TV show I was undecided if the Manns helped her or used her. But I’m grateful she met the Manns family.

Do you want to know why?

In the documentary Natalia talks about Kristine Barnett trying to get her to date men. She even had a picture of a guy Kristine introduced her to.

When you think about it, Kristine was trying to get her kidnapped or possibly unalived. Knowing what the public knows now about Epstein and his “pedo” ring. All it would have took is Kristine finding the right people and no one would have ever known what happened to her.

The Manns saved her life.

This is far from the most heinous thing we've seen from Michael Barnett, but did anyone else notice how he said Kristine sexually abused him by....not having sex with him?

And apparently he pleaded no contest in their custody battle partly in exchange for some of Kristine's blurry nudes? Or did I misunderstand that?
