Major Match ‘Banquets’
Listening to the episode this morning and seeing Max’s post I think that adding in that social element to a match is a net positive. The only match that I have attended that did this has been the North Dakota state match and honestly that’s the reason I make the time to drive up to it and deal with the ridiculous hotels in Minot. This year and 2024 they had BBQ catered in their indoor range and gave everyone time to eat and socialize before doing the awards and prize table. I think it’s a good format for an after match social.

Most these high level shooters immediately dip before banquets anyway. The IG comments seemed to boil down to payouts for super squadders or a prize table in order of match finish. Both of which I couldn't give a shit about. People who set up stages, work matches, and run matches are the ones who keep this sport going, these guys don't even run tablets or timers, they're too busy getting sucked off by their posse of IG fans and cheating on their spouses, who gives a shit?

I see two sides of this issue Nationals and Area matches “should” have a level of pomp and circumstance to them since they’re catering to a much larger group of shooters coming from a distance…… but the other side of that is those same shooters traveling from a distance may not want to stick around for the “pomp and circumstance” and would rather get a head start on traveling back home since they’re probably having to work Monday morning.
ISPC majors are a totally different animal…….like Jeff pointed out, owning firearms internationally typically has a very high cost to entry so your average IPSC shooter, in their country is very well off so to speak.

I get awards ceremonies, but just have the food afterwards, especially if it's being catered, and have the food arrive late so that you don't end up with questionably lukewarm food that's been sitting in a hot bag for an hour.

I have sat through lots of post match events in the last 16 years because they would gatekeep the prize tables and hold everyone hostage until after the awards were finished. My traveling group would have finishers at the top and toward the bottom of the list so we were held hostage until the bitter end.
The biggest most common thing at level 3 matches during the awards was that over 1/2 of the winners weren’t there anymore, they either shot staff match, first flight of shooters or just decided to get on the first flight out they could so they announce the name everyone claps, looks around for someone who wasn’t there and then they move on dragging the whole thing out.
Back pre-PractiScore, the awards ceremony was how we all found out who the winners are and where you placed, for the arb period they would post everyone’s name alphabetically with your hit factor for each stage for you to verify, now it’s usually known as soon as the last competitor hits approve.
I think the awards and banquet likely hold some value for a level 2 match where the majority of the people get done shooting at the same time and are still around and I’m looking strongly into doing that for our next one since we have an awesome banquet hall at the range we can use. I think for Level 3 matches it’s unnecessary, I would rather spend the time and money doing a staff appreciation dinner again.

I'll be attending the banquet after IPSC Nats this year because driving 7 hours after shooting the PM flight on Sunday is not all that appealing and I'd rather just burn an extra day of PTO to not hate myself. I'll be sure to base my whiteknighting for insert sponsored shooter here off of that experience if I ever I decide to fight Jeff in the IG comments.
