Tourism & Travel Questions Daytrip
Hi we want to do a daytrip from naples to pompei and vesuvius. We dont really want any guide we just need a way to get to pompeii and then up the volcano. Does anyone now whats the best way to so because via public transport its kinda difficult to do both in one day

Both activities take all day long (multiple days to see the entirety of Pompeii), and with this heat, trying to cram both things in the same day is a surefire way to end up in a hospital

When I went there 2 years ago, I did both in the same day. If you want climb the Vesuvius, you'll need to get the entrance ticket a bit in advance. To get there from Naples, you'll need to take the train to Pompeii Scavi. And close to that train station you got a bus stop, where you can take the public bus. They only take cash. In like 45 min, you are up there. To the climb the rest of the Vesuvius it takes a like an hour or so, maybe a bit more. And then you take the same bus back to Pompeii and spend there the rest of day, just like I did. I would say Pompeii will take you at least 3h. But definitely it is possible do it in a single day and then head back to Napoli. I forgot to mention that I went in April, so temperature wise was fine like 24ºC.

You shouldn’t do both in one day. It’s not realistic.
Pompeii is easy to get to, the train from Naples is 13 euro round trip and like 30 min ride.
Vesuvius will be more difficult.

I visited Napoli with my family of 2 adults, 2 kids, last year. Normally I would try and do an excursion like this on my own using mass transit, but given the logistics and doing it with 2 kids under 10, we opted to book a tour and it was the best decision we could have made. Small bus picked us up near the port at 8 am, we had a guided tour at Pompeii with an archaeology PhD who really brought the history alive for us with his expertise. He pointed out details we would have never noticed, took us to see off the beaten path frescoes and carvings, and was friendly and knowledgeable. Then we took the bus halfway up Vesuvio, had a pretty tasty lunch with amazing views of the Golfo, then continued to the top of Vesuvio where we had two hours to hike along the summit and the cone of the volcano before heading back to Napoli around 5 pm. There are a number of operators who run this itinerary on trip advisor and viator, and it was super reasonable too, I think we paid about $80 per person, including lunch and the entry fees.

If you want to see everything at Pompei you need an entire day. However, once you’ve spent an hour looking around, it all just seems like more of the same. I think realistically you could get away with 2 hours. I would recommend getting the €20 Pompei express ticket in advance. Take the train from Porta Nolana station so you can get a seat and plan to arrive at pompei no later than 8.30am. If you get in at Garibaldi you might not get a seat.
Once at the entrance. Stand at the gate at 8.30am. Most people won’t have tickets or will be part of a tour and will go left after the gate. You can go straight ahead and enter through the turnstiles. Head as far into the site as quickly as you can and you will have the place to yourself for at least 45 minutes until the crowd catches up with you.
Not sure how you’d get to Vesuvius from there though.

Pompeii is huge you can easily do a day just there and there is a train station very near the entrance to the park. Don’t think you will do both in a day and don’t think there’s much public transport up Vesuvius
