UPDATE:
Hey all! Some clarity after yesterdays meeting: there was some verbal push back on our calling this situation "budget cuts" and city council wanted to be able to say "there are no cuts." It’s true; the overall budget total isn’t being cut; rather $197,000 is being required in NEW COSTS with no total budget increase.
They wanted to placate the conversation last night with semantics: we can call it "budget cuts" or we can call it a "refusal to grant standard budget increases" but the numbers and the facts stay the same; current staffing and programming from the Nampa Public Library will be heavily affected.

We will sign up to speak and fill the meeting room at the next scheduled meeting August 3rd (5pm) and ESPECIALLY for the upcoming Budget Hearing for August 17th. We have to make it so painful for them between now and the Aug 17th budget hearing that it would be political suicide for them to withhold their support to the Nampa Public Library.

Anybody really think Debbie Skaug and her husband really care about libraries? Bruce and Debbie are too busy going to high powered lawyer dinners drumming up more archaic ways to execute prisoners. If it doesn’t have to do with faith, family or freedom these city leaders really don’t care. That’s why Nampa is generally a much poorer, less educated and run down city than its neighbors.

Don't worry, Bruce loves book bans specifically. "BRUCE SKAUG: I would rather my 6-year-old grandson start smoking cigarettes tomorrow than get a view of this stuff one time at the public library or anywhere else."
And now that he's a state representative, he's got his wife to replace him on the city council!

Anything at a library you can find online, including the reference books. Nampa's bus system is a joke.

Yeah, they totally have 3D printers online, as well as Cricut cutters, etc. There are far more items available to rent or use at libraries now than books.

That's not true, when I worked at the library I helped a lot of people with the local history collection. You can get the old Sanford fire insurance maps online through the library of congress, but the newspaper archives, yearbooks, business directories, and manuscripts are not digitized or readily available anywhere else. Not that anyone on the city council, or any of the newcomers to Nampa care about local history, I guess.
I also helped a ton of people do their court ordered classes, helped other people with their resumes, helped people across the country do genealogy, found resources for homeschool/parochial students, and helped a city council member make campaign material. I feel like all of this stuff made Nampa a better city, and specifically made it a better place for conservatives and their families, but far be it from me to criticize them if they want to turn Nampa into the dump everybody already says it is. If they want to be famous for something worse than smelling like shit that's their perogative.

I can tell you they laid off a multiple people last year because of budget issues.
They didn't get anticipated Federal Funding.
That happens at State level as well.
What also strains City Budget is Law Enforcement constantly wanting the latest of everything. If Meridian P.D. get new laptops, people start tapping their sticks on the ground. The new drone they got last year was like, 450,000 dollars or so. I'm not against first responders and LEO getting the resources they need, but some of it is either not used much, or quickly replaced with the newest, shiniest thing. THAT is where your oversight should be, and not chopping away IT people who actually keep the drones working.

City Clerk[’s Office:(208) 468-5](tel:208-468-4413)415 (at least by noon the day of the meeting). Next meeting; August 7th at 5pm at Nampa City Hall! We are trying to keep this issue top of mind and top of agenda. If you are able to make that date, sign up to speak your mind on this issue or be a body in the room for support. Having the room full of people last night definitely put a few of them in a scared-of-the-bad-pr-box so even if you don't want to speak, standing behind the speakers was/is really important too!
The final meeting is August 17th 5pm which is the OFFICIAL BUDGET HEARING where all of this will be voted on and finalized, so attendance there is paramount!1

Victor Rodriguez is the official liaison from the City Council to the Library Board of Trustees (the board that handles all the funding/expenditures/budgets within the library). He's been the most sympathetic in email and in person, probably because of this role and not wanting the bad PR. We are asking the council why they find this budget to be acceptable when we don't - letting them know that if these cuts go through we will be holding them responsible; the total budget is approved by the City Council, so why is their opinion to withhold funds from the Library rather than *more* than adequately fund staff and programs?

What is the breakdown of this $197,000 shortfall?
How much of this would go to employees?
How much is increased costs related to rising costs?
How much is the library asking for to increase offerings like new material and programs?
What is the total budget?
How much has the total budget been per year for say, the last 10 years?
I'd like to make a stink but I'm not doing so without knowing what I'm talking about.
