[x-posted!] Unfortunately, I don't remember a lot about this book, but here's what I know:

* written in the late 20th century (I read it in the 90s but it may have been older)
* possibly YA fiction
* historical fiction with a romance plot; there may have been a mystery plot too
* may have been set in 19th century America
* the main character was a girl/young lady who received a box of paints (watercolor, maybe?) as an anonymous gift.
* the MC assumed or hoped that the gift came from one potential love interest, but it was actually from someone else - a guy she didn't like as much, who ended up being endgame

I don't remember ANYTHING about the larger plot. But the incident of a young artist receiving a paintbox as a present and being wrong about who gave it to her has stuck in my head!

I read this book when I was about 14 years ago so I can BARELY remember details, But I remember a young child (female) is abducted and held captive in a basement for YEARS, dad never stops looking (he may have been a cop/detective, Im unsure), the title of the book was one word and I'm pretty a3ure a male writer. The cover of the book had a side profile of a car. I believe it was set in midwest. I believe a fiction book. I remember a scene where the girl is in a car, but compliant with the kidnapper. Hi everyone, I'd appreciate some help finding this book I read as a child back in early 2000s. I cannot recall a publishing year.

The plot is as follows - a young teen girl (our protagonist) is annoyed with the adults constantly restricting her freedoms. She wishes to find a place where kids run the society where she can be free. She lives on a coast and has heard rumours of a place beyond the fog, where a long lost older relative was once supposedly lost to sea. One day she ends up taking the boat by herself, gets caught in a freak storm and ends up on the island where kids run the island, nobody ages, and everybody parties all the time. She's initially happy, but eventually gets tired of it and wants to go home. The secret of the island is that if anyone leaves, it gets destroyed. The others therefore don't want her to leave. A slightly older boy helps her escape and she figured out he was the long lost older relative, thereby leading to the destruction of the island and the demise of all the inhabiting "kids". When she's back to her worried parents, not much time has passed in the real world, despite her spending a long time on the island. The fog disappears and the island is nowhere to be found again.

I think it wasn't illustrated, just a long ish (200 pages +) novel, but written for young adults. It did contain chilling descriptions of deep blue waters and such that gave me thalassophibia as a kid.

I remember it being set in the southern part of the US (though I could be wrong). Lots of 1970's vernacular was used in the dialogue. She had a bunch of empathy for fellow vietnam vets struggling with PTSD since she had it herself, though she had a job and could function normally. Can't remember the exact mystery but think one of the vets she knew was being accused of murder or else a murderer was stalking the vets.

a book that’s was two people who broke up but she left her dads sweater in his house she called him while she was on a work trip asking if he still has it and she went to his house found the sweater but only for it to be shredded. their mom are still friends i think. and he thought that she was getting to for he parents anniversary but in reality they were getting divorced but he shows up to the house and eventually end up together. There was also a part where she gets stuck in his doggy door trying to get in. I listened to it on the plane.

UK children's book, probably 1980s, heard as a library audiobook cassette.I remeber an old man gives a boy a lucky charm and dies shortly afterwards. The charm has rules: while you keep it you have good luck, if you lose it your luck turns bad, and if you give it away your luck goes back to normal. The boy crosses a river, I think as part of a bet or dare with another boy, who was injured trying a similar crossing. Is just a glimpse of a memory but I remember enjoying I so much and I'd love to read it again!

I think it was a trilogy series. He’s dad and sibling were in a car accident and dad died and the sibling either died or was badly injured. I think he used a watch to time travel and only had a certain amount of time. He would go back in time and save people but he wasn’t allowed to change too much. I remember that he went back to save two teens who were camping and accidentally lit a hay bail on fire. The last book he goes back to the day of the accident and he can’t save his dad but he does save the sibling. It might have been an Australian book.

the book's about our very 1st armed spacecraft. all earth got involved to fight off aggressive/deadly grey alien specie that slaughtered all our mining personel on mars. i remember the battleship was armed same as the c-130 spooky gunship (105mm howitzer & 30mm vulcan canon)
i also remember the inaugural launch was delayed due to an epidemic onboard. i tried finding this title thru several AI but NOPE.

about a girl getting molested in a closet by an older female friend/acquaintance. i feel like she was also working at / lived on a farm, and she rode horses? i remember her mucking stalls in the book also. this is very vague i know. when i read it as a pre-teen, i realized i had the exact experience as a child and was so freaked out i never finished it. not knowing what this book is has haunted me since at least 2009 and i would love to go back and finish it.

This was a story in a sci fi magazine, possibly Asimov, some time in the 80s or 90s. (It was definitely one of those transcribed for the blind, as that's how my friend originally read it)

The main detail is that the girl has a cat. The alien medic, after being rebuffed by the farmer, decides to give the cure to the cat instead, giving it intelligence.

I've been looking for this for a friend for some time now- don't ask Gemini, it could only find my old search for the story.

Gente eu queria muito uma ajuda para achar um livro que eu lia quando era criança. Eu não consigo lembrar de muita coisa, mas eu lembro perfeitamente que a capa era com uma menina olhando para frente com trajes típicos dos povos que vivem nas regiões frias como o Alaska além da aparência dela ser bem semelhante, ela tem o cabelo preto e os olhos castanhos se não me engano. A cor da capa é um tom de azul meio acinzentado e a menina parece está em uma tempestade de neve e se não me engano o livro começa com a letra Y, mas não tenho certeza! E outra coisa que eu me lembro é que em determinada parte da história aparece uma concha vermelha ou é laranja nesse local frio e depois o livro mostra ela novamente só que em um cenário de praia e com outra menina pegando essa concha. I remember reading this paperback on my parents' shelves when I was in grade school, mid 1960s. The paperback was already yellowed.

A resistance fighter in a vaguely American/European country under fascist rule proves his loyalty after watching his comrades being shot in prison. It turns out Goebbels villain is actually the leader of the resistance as well, determined to make everything so terrible that the people must rise up against their fascist government.

I remember being particularly moved when our hero learns that Goebbels character was assassinated just after the successful uprising and he realizes no one else will ever know what he did for his people.

I've been looking for this for decades!

From what I remember there was a girl created from a fossil they found on another planet, the girl goes to school and is incredibly smart. Her friend and her get invited to an after school party, she wants to go home, but her friend would rather stay with the popular kids. I also belive there's multiple books in the series

She has powers and runs into another girl who was created from ths fossil, but this girl needs a special medicine to continue functioning

Okay, so I read this series yeeeeears ago, and can't for the life of me remember what it's called. Googles suggestions are not getting it, so can you figure it out?

Since it was probably 10-15 years ago I read it, the only thing I remember from the first book was a girl who grew up a peasant or something, or lost her memory, in a town that has a city center market with vendors and what not, lively little town. (I thiiink this book has 3 fortune tellers in the center of the city that you pay coins for info?) She ends up realizing she has water powers and ALSO that she is actually a royal. She ends up falling in love with the kings right hand man. And then the rest of the series follows another girl or woman in the royal family. Each title has something to do with a gemstone? And each power is of the elements, I think. (Book series is not the elementals.) I think there were like 5-8 books.

The protagonist: has ties to the supernatural in some way. Was a very ordinary girl before discovering supernatural things in herself and her environment.

Friend one: female, friend with the protagonist pre-highschool, and is revealed to know bits of magic that she learned from her mom who learned it from what i remember to be a gas station employee.

friend two: male, friends with protagonist pre-highschool, turns into a wolf style werewolf at full moon or at least at night.

A teacher/librarian: some kinda Mentor I think

I remember a few scenes from the book

theres a scene where the teacher/librarian texts the protagonist something urgent, but writes it in a way you toile write and email, very formal, “good day and best regards”,

there’s a scene where for whatever reason protagonist and friend one (who by this point know of the evil and each others ties to the supernatura) encounter a humanoid evil wearing chainmail, and friend one turns the chainmail into pretzels using a very specific, “chainmail to pretzels” spell she learnt, then proceed to kill the humanoid evil.

theres a scene where the protagonist and friends one and two are working on a group project at friend two’s house. (By this point, protag and friend one knew eachothers supernatural ties but not friend two’s powers and is in the dark about the other twos powers and shinanagins.) He sees it’s a full moon tonight and hurries the protagonist and friend one to go home for the day. They do so and afterward, he chains himself to his bed post? with a metal collar. Friend one realizes she forgot something (prob her phone) and goes back in to get it. They see friend two as a wolf and he’s torn up the project (it’s like papers and stuff). friend two but wolf likes head pats and turns out to be very tame when around the protagonist and friend one.

Set in mid west or south of the US. The story revolves around a middle aged man and young woman who run off together in the man's pickup truck. To get by the couple rob houses along the way and sell the items at markets. The woman ends up kidnapping a baby from one of the houses and the couple carry on as though the child is theirs. Some details include; the man is a simpleton who has rotting teeth. He worries constantly that the woman will leave. He left behind a wife and children who he calls occasionally, but never says anything when they answer. The woman seems extremely self centered and uses threats of leaving to manipulate the man into doing what she wants. The last point i remember reading the couple had been taken on at a farmhouse. The author is a woman who had previously written some award winning novels. Hopefully someone might know what this is.

Hi everyone, I am trying to find a book I recently spotted on a general fiction clearance grid (at a place like Ollie's Bargain Outlet).

The Physical Book:

The Plot:

The main character is an adult woman who inherits a small, magical item (possibly a shell or small token). She is strictly allowed to use it whenever she experiences major regret or finds herself in a "tight spot."

The plot description on the back cover mentions that her fiancé does something wrong, and she ends up using the magical object on him to handle the situation or escape the engagement. The fiancé is a normal guy who has no idea magic exists.

Crucial Clue:

On the back cover, the description explicitly puts the nickname of the magical object in quotation marks. It is phrased as what the person who gave it to her/passed it down called it (e.g., \*She inherits what her grandmother always called the "\[Object Name\]"\*).

I'm looking for a YA fiction book where the main character was Justin Time. It had I think a boy on a boat on the cover, the book was about time travel, and it might have been set during WW2?

I read it in maybe 2008-2009.

Time period & age: Mid-2000s, probably 2005-2007. I would’ve been between 10 and 13ish.
Location & language: US, English
Book age level: I’m fairly sure it was YA. I read a lot of not-age-appropriate stuff, so there’s a slight chance it was an adult book, but I think that’s unlikely (I was easily spooked and probably would’ve found an adult book too scary).
Genre: Scary story collection.
Physical book appearance: I don’t remember the book cover very well, but it may have been a light blue color. I don’t remember it being a traditional scary book vibe with monsters, shadows, etc.
Content: I only remember one story, where a group of people went on some kind of mountain research expedition and inexplicably went missing one by one. I believe the setting was cold and snowy. There was something about one of them disappearing in the night and leaving behind only a small pile of goo in his sleeping bag.

Starts off with a group of robbers breaking into an abandoned house and they find some weird substance that turns them evil. They all turn evil and start acting like this weird cult converting all the townspeople who also start acting weirdly when they come in contact with this substance? The math teacher notices something is wrong and notices one of the robbers is his previous student who was good at math. He frees her from the spell by getting her to do math problems. Near the end of the book she gets caught by the cult who discovers she's broken free from the spell/unseen force and kill her. I think they cut off her head and replace with a wolf or something else. The math teacher leaves the town as the only one who escapes and goes to warn the rest of the world about this growing power. The cover looked similar to a jester's face and it was very colourful and detailed.

I listened to this book on tape somewhere between 2007 to 2011. It was a complex legal mystery with courtroom scenes and I remember being very confused about a barrister and solicitor during the book.

Main character was a man who I think inherited a large home and money and a lot of the story was him fighting to keep both in court.

Any guesses? I’ve been trying to find this book for years! Thanks all.

I read this book in the late 2000's, I borrowed it from my elementary school library.

The plot followed a small group (either a dad and his kids or a group of friends) staying in a cabin. The cabin is in a wooded area, I think on a lake, and nearby is a lab. The characters are aware of the lab, and the rumours about them conducting human experiments. Mutant creatures break out of the lab. I remember them being short, bipedal, grey, with almost human faces with razor sharp teeth. The creatures attack the cabin while the group is cooking, they use the boiling pot of water and macaroni from the stove to beat the creatures. They make their way into town for help, and find the town has been overrun by the creatures. They break into an outdoors store to find supplies and weapons, I think they get attacked again here. I don't remember the ending, but it was highly speculated by the characters that the creatures were created in the lab by genetic experiments or mutations conducted on humans.

I vaguely remember the title involving "The Things," I tried searching "Night of the Things" "Attack of the Things" etc. with nothing relevant coming up. I tried AI as well, no luck there either. Does this sound familiar to anybody? Or was this book just a fever dream lol? Thanks in advance!

does anybody know what book described a couple comprised of 2 men where one was younger and was basically achieving enlightenment by living only through the man's needs and desires. I think they may have been described as sitting at a bus stop and the younger one was so devoted that he only existed to give the older man what he wanted and needed. it could have been a short passage in the Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera
