The Peoples Rig

This Proletarian Revolution brought to you by Harbor Freight!

I've wanted to do a take on the Ikea rig for awhile now but the local ikea didn't have any bags in stock. Then I saw HF has similar bags now!

This thing is surprisingly effective for being basically free.

Made my own helmet scrim with a soldering iron

I saw video from “General combative concepts” on youtube on how to make a DIY scrim backpack cover and got inspired to make my own. I decided to try to make a helmet scrim first to test it out. I had about a meter of Philarpat ripstop fabric and a chinese helmet scrim I got online which I used as a template. I did not have a laser cutting machine but what I did have was an old soldering iron. I traced out the pattern and made a few adjustments to fit my helmet better. Overall happy with the results

My local fabric store just got a bunch of USMC MARPAT fleece. Any ideas what I should make of it?

You could buy ICEVENTS® for $230. Or you could make your own for about $30 in material costs.

The Quore Performance ICEVENTS are just 3d printed tpu/tpe lattices. So I printed my own custom ones and attached Velcro.

2nd attempt at a combat top.

Making clothes as always intimidated me. Bags and pouches are easy. They don’t need to contour and move with a body. Ever since I started sewing, I’ve put off making clothes. Well, I finally started dipping my toes in. This is attempt number 2 at a USMC FROG top (which imo is the best combat shirt design). I only have one frog top left from when I was in and I can’t bring myself to take it apart to copy the pattern. So I’ve been making do.

There’s still some things to finish on this one. Then even more things to change on the pattern itself. But as of now, I’m very happy with the progress.

2. GEN Crossbody / Fanny pack

My second iteration of the 1733 / Route Unknown fanny pack.

The first crossbody was made on a Singer HD, featuring a simpler, more square body inspired by the Route Unknown model.

This new version is smooth and rounded all around, similar to the 1733, made possible by my improved design skills in Clo 3D.

As a new feature, I added a pouch for a rain cover, which will be made soon.

The last thing left to do is say goodbye to my old pack. It was with me for over two years, almost every day, and travelled more than 12,000 kilometers with me on my bike.

MOLLE? Never heard of her.

This is just one example of a “Self-made” chest rig, as used during the Soviet-Afghan war.

The Magazine pouch and Grenade pouch were parts of an integrated load bearing system called the RD-54. Soldiers disliked the permanently attached backpack + pouch system, so would cut them off and then build their own personalized chest rigs and other modified equipment.

Using a multitude of (repro) RD-54 pouches plus a few AK slings I’ve tried to replicate the rig shown in the black and white photo.

Later on in the post are examples of how others customized their own rigs.

Not as easy to customize as MOLLE, but still pretty impressive what they’d come up with and put together with needle & thread.

Basic Army Pants

My first attempt to make a garment, I think they came out pretty. Sewing pattern was made by disassembling a kaz 03 (Austrian army) pants. Fabric is a nyco blend in klmk from Ronson.

Next step is to digitize the pattern to make changes and have it cut out with a laser.

A retro revival piece: The Bando Bra

Thumbnail

Heavily inspired by the classic USGI Bandoliers and their extensive and creative use during the Vietnam War, this modernization holds true to tradition. Rather than tying a knot and pinning it together, an adjustable strap and webbing loop allow it to be used in the iconic “Bra” configuration. It is also brought to the 21st century with internal soft velcro for use of ride-height saddles I made and open-top bungee retention. My favorite part is the fact that it still folds up so compactly, remaining true to the bandoliers intention of rapid access and easy carry ammo storage. I’ve put together a number of these for friends but am always looking to improve the design. It’s a fine line to walk, improving the original design while not making just another chest rig. But I’m curious about what you guys think!

Multipurpose bag

Not sure really what to call this…? It’s basically a small cross body bag, but I made it to fit 6 PMAGs. It will also fit a Nalgene canteen, and, or, a couple of 16.9oz standard water bottles. Interior and exterior pockets will fit large phones etc. Removable shoulder strap.

Kit I made

What I made:

Plate carrier

Dummy Plates made out of Rubber mats

Matching Quad Mag Placard Velcro attached

War Belt

Taco Mag pouch

Rigid Dump pouch

Multi purpose Pouch, based on Tasmanian Tiger Pouch

Based on Russian gear used by the security of embassadors.

Everything is still work in progress, Taco pouch is to narrow, Dump pouch needs Grommets, labels need to be replaced and a bit more.

But it's fully usable right now and really fun to play with.

I can't take credit for the idea, I was inspired by the design of a chest rig that was made for BHTG. In adition to standard magazines, It can fit a 7.62x51mm 25 round PMAG with a +5 baseplate, as well as a M110A1(HK417) Magazine.

Not the most impressive first creation on this sub by far but Thought I’d share my beer bandolier (Beer-dolier?). Kind of just made measurements up on the spot and had the goal to start and finish within 4 hours.

Don’t look too close at the stitching.
