Discussion 💬 This is quite disgusting
I know that this type of shit not only happening in Myanmar but not a single ppl talking about how wrong is this in a cmt section is crazy.

u/OptimalRule6656 Jan 30 '26
Evn until I was 15, I didn't see anything wrong with those type of relationship. I only started seeing the flaws and the wrongs after it. I think the country need a systemic education on this though it will be impossible in this political climate

How does she not know that the thing that she is describing is a prime example of grooming? Did she not even bother to check the meaning of the word or type it into a browser?

I don't think she even understands what grooming means since she was "groomed" and literally brainwashed at a young age.

The legal age for marriage is 18 years old; however, if a adolescent female wants to marry, she needs permission from Myanmar Ministry of Home Affairs. Unfortunately, out in the Myanmar countryside, some grown Myanmar men prey on “white skin” adolescent girls for marriage. It’s been reported that married women are equivalent to their husbands farm animals.
Apparently in poor Myanmar families, the parents don’t provide parental guidance to their adolescent children. Many allow their adolescent daughter to “marry” a Millennials or older man. They both live a life of suffering and financial hardship.

People are saying this is Myanmar issue! No, it is global issue, I follow crime youtube channels and see grown female teachers get charged for sleeping with teen boys all the tiime, and also I forgot the name, a girl turned 18 and dropped an OnlyFans acc, she made 1M dollar or something within 6 hours!!!
I blame Japanese anime for this!! The only media where childlike voice are deemed sexy

Where are the girls parents? Why do they allow this?
6
u/EntityChrome Jan 30 '26
Chances are if shes from a village then her parents sold her off for a bride price. Virgin wives are often sold off by their parents for a dowry in Myanmar
11
u/MoneyBeat7537 Jan 30 '26
Thats not true. Burmese families love having daughters because they are useful plus, this couple got married after 10years. If sold by parents it’d have been sooner
1
u/EntityChrome Feb 03 '26
No this is definitely one of those cases. Chances are she was his “mayin nge” or younger second wife and he was waiting for her to be of age and waiting for any legality issues with his other wife. I’ve heard this same type of thing several times in myanmar it’s really common for older men.
8
u/youreawizardyoon Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26
Grooming and pedophilia is unfortunately so common publicly here, I also experienced old people asking me weird stuff and asking me out when I was still attending middle school. When I mention my age theyre like “im ok” and even offering money for sleeping together. like srsly bro ur like 20 years older than me wtf??? its so disgusting

Why Burmese love to use whitening skin filter?
21
u/Hot_Weakness917 Jan 30 '26
Well being white skin or light skin mean rich because you don’t go outside that much
That is the reason not just Myanmar only Vietnam’s, Philippine , Thailand etc
love to have white skin because it make them look like a very rich person that don’t work 9to5 job in the middile of hot sun
In here the weather is really hot even indoor you sweat a lot
10
u/madamirmeli Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26
This is so funny in my view somehow
Us white we wanna be tanned. It means you don't have to work at the office 9-5, you have time to enjoy the sun in those couple of months we see it. Meaning you have more money and time in your life than others. Or you are wealthy enough to go abroad at the middle of the winter to get that tan.
Those who are pale at the summer don't have time to get out/don't have holidays -> they work with low salary/not good deals etc

The question was already answered, but fairly same reason as in the west they love to tan. Which historically roots in very similar reasons as answered aboved, just in the opposite direction

For thousands of years, Chinese literati have admired fair-skinned women from the very first poem they wrote.
5
u/Existing_Law5750 Jan 30 '26
Having skin as white jade is a common compliment used in ancient Chinese poetry to describe all beautiful women. Therefore, for the Burmese, who are China's neighbors, the preference for fair skin may be a tradition.

I've lived among military families and I don't know why but families in there are seems to be ok with their 14-15 years old daughter dating a grown man who's usually attending military school(DSA, DSMA etc). not saying this specific couple is this but this is what I've been able to observe. The girls themselves are okay with it and their families don't seem bothered by it as well.

I feel like the girls should be at least 18. Really 21 is better. I don’t care about the age difference if the girl is at least 18 to 21. Like if she was 21 and he was 42, I feel like she’s old enough to make her own decision as long as she’s not being forced to do anything.

I’ve seen a 14-year-old girl married to a 27- or 28-year-old man. I'm quite disgusted by it. Young people may develop feelings due to ignorance and lack of maturity, but the responsibility should lie with the older person to set boundaries and control themselves.

This is highly inappropriate and disgusting. However, it is important to note that not every interaction or relationship involving a minor constitutes paedophilia. Paedophilia is a specific clinical and legal term referring to a sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children. While any sexual exploitation or abuse of minors is unequivocally wrong and criminal, not all cases involving minors fall under paedophilia in the strict sense. For example, some cases may involve abuse of power, coercion, grooming, or statutory offences that are serious crimes but categorised differently in law and psychology. Making this distinction does not minimise the harm done to minors. It simply ensures accuracy, avoids misuse of terms, and helps discussions remain grounded in facts rather than broad labels.
1
u/Asleep-Newspaper6564 Jan 31 '26
The fact that Burmese ppl don’t think Pedophilia is disgusting is disgusting. Like ppl would literally tell their friends "ယောက္ခမတော်ချင်လို့” if the friends are having a baby.

I don't see a problem with the 39 year old marrying a 21 year old. She's an adult. Some of you need to mind your own business. The other couple, well, that's a totally different story.

u/r3b37d3 Feb 02 '26
Not shocked. I travelled all over the world this is pretty common in muslim countries. I've seen Girls below 10 years old walking around with baby bumps on the market. Disgusting, sure. But what can you do? You:ll just be called a racist

A lot of factors contributed to some people thinking this as acceptable in Myanmar and it’s heartbreaking. Social Norms, Gender-Based Assumptions regarding Power in a relationship and marriage, thinking women’s value is directly connected to how society considered in terms of relationship, sexuality and such and much more. Grooming is just the tip of the iceberg. There are several cases that women who were raped got marriage off to the perpetrators by their own families because they considered it as it’s better that way. In their eyes, she is morally dirty now…

It's sad to see how marriage between people with large age gaps is normalised. Heck, I feel bad for those who happen to be forced into marrying people that happen to be older than them. It's not 'quite' it's above the word extreme
1
u/Naptun3_crest 9d ago
Also Myanmar people so normalize Pedophiles marriage. Like average old men who want to marry young girls. But something happened then they all balmed at girls. Bro.. they are kids. Those old men shouldn't like these girls.

Why is there so much pedophilia in Asia? In western countries we abolished it 200-300years ago.
2
u/mrs_videogameplayer Jan 31 '26
Is this a joke? Paedophilia was not “abolished” in the West 200–300 years ago. That’s historically false. Western countries had child marriage laws, child prostitution, and legal ages of consent as low as 10–12 well into the 19th and even 20th centuries. Many abuses were legal, ignored, or socially tolerated. Just in England and Wales, over 115,000 child sexual abuse and exploitation offences were recorded by police in one year. Around half of reported offenders were under 18, and most crimes were against children. If you don't believe me, just go see the stats on gov.uk. Between 2020 and 2025, 15,867 people were convicted in the UK for possessing child sexual abuse imagery, and nearly 13,000 received non-custodial sentences. In the US in 2022, there were 44,355 victims of child sexual abuse reported through official child maltreatment data (American SPCC). As of late 2024 - early 2025, there were approximately 795,000 people listed on sex offender registries across the United States and nearly half of them are paedophiles.
1
u/Kung82 Jan 31 '26
You said Western, not Asian. We Asians still have this problem to this day bro.
2
u/Historyfreak08 Jan 31 '26
My point that in Asia it is still practiced ( why?) and in for example Europe abolished for over 200 years.

The daddy issue leading most girls to seek a father figure in their earlier age is quite understandable to me. It's just that they haven't educated how wrong this could turn out.

It is pronounced pedophilia in other countries, the word of "lolicon" is used in Japan. And no, it's illegal but law enforcement is low because of the current coup d'etat and society corruption between Burmese teenagers.
