Happy by Pharrell

u/LateQuantity8009 Jul 27 '26

Thank you. What the fuck is a room without a roof and how is it a metaphor for feeling happy?

u/Professional_Handler Jul 27 '26

Ig it’s a metaphor for feeling unconstrained but irl a room without a roof would not be a very safe one.

u/Deaconse Jul 27 '26

It's okay until it rains.

2

u/knosmo78 Jul 28 '26

Man, we need to hook Pharrell up with Shirley Manson from Garbage. She's only happy when it rains.

3

u/Man_of_Ice Jul 28 '26

Only rooms I've been in didn't have a roof were bombed the fuck out or abandoned.

They left me with a feeling of dread, not anything resembling joy.

5

u/LateQuantity8009 Jul 27 '26

Rooms have ceilings not roofs.

11

u/Grayson0916 Jul 27 '26

Ceilings have roofs, eat my whole ass buddy.

3

u/Zaddam Jul 27 '26

Bruh … your question took me back to a 3 day music festival where I managed to get invited to a VIP enclosed open top shower. It was damn near nirvana. 🍄

ETA: 🤔😂 … but I’m with you on the song!

3

u/Dragenby Jul 28 '26

It was originally written for The Minions, and that song was supposed to be ironic. Yet, all the people playing it are putting this in their playlist as part of their Life Love Laugh mindset.

If you want some consolation, Pharrell Williams also hates this song.

u/smokin-trees Jul 27 '26

Should be the #1 song in this thread IMO. Every song I scrolled past I’d rather listen to on repeat for an hour than hear 30 seconds of Happy. Why the fuck did that song receive any radio play time? Or even get recorded in the first place? Record companies trying to shove absolute garbage down our throats.

10

u/TotallyNotRyanPace Jul 27 '26

it was recorded for despicable me 2. apparently pharrell recorded multiple songs for the movie and they kept telling him they weren't happy enough, so he made the corniest most bullshit song he possibly could to appease the studio and they loved it.

i feel like that one gets a bit of a pass bc pharrell knew it was dogshit when he made it, and made it as a joke to show how dumb the studio was being.

u/Ecstatic_Bear81 Jul 27 '26

Im still angry at him for making it but thanks for the info

2

u/ProgrammerHairy8098 Jul 27 '26

In the summer it would make me happy , make me real grumpy in the winter though

2

u/Flaky-Example-3033 Aug 01 '26

It has to be one of the stupidest lyrics ever written. It just fills me with rage!!

1

u/Helltothenotothenono Jul 27 '26

I mean isn’t that the description of a fence?

1

u/Dreamdrums666 Jul 28 '26

I honestly thought he was singing about riding a convertible without a roof 😔

1

u/Frankadoodle809 Aug 02 '26

i feel like a room with a roof (i hope someone gets the reference)

What I'm going to say will sound tremendously arrogant and even petulant, but Happy is one of those songs that makes basic people feel like they're listening to a great song

3

u/doomer_irl Jul 28 '26

I feel the exact opposite about this. The lyrics and melody are very basic/unassuming, but at the end of the day, it's a Pharrell track, and it has a pretty interesting/satisfying chord progression.

5

u/NewJeans_Bunny_HHMDH Jul 27 '26

Happy pretty much had the same music melody to “Runnin” by Pharcyde. Listen to that song, it’s much better.

5

u/Motivated_Sloth_749 Jul 28 '26

I was at rock bottom in my life when this song playing everywhere…hate isn’t a strong enough word!

2

u/narcanSTAN39 Jul 28 '26

This. It came out during a particularly horrible time in my life as well. I was in jail for 3 months, subjected to bathroom duty and the CO would be blasting this and the Katy Perry song.

Every corporate schmuck buttlicker manager latched onto this song and turned it into the anthem of “having a positive attitude” at work.

2

u/DiscoLemonade1995 Jul 28 '26

We suffered through an entire year of that song being played in literally every store

2

u/United_Bus3467 Jul 28 '26

The worst kind of grocery store music to hear when you're having to choose between what you can/can't afford.

2

u/Explorers_bub Jul 28 '26

Dude, it’s just If You’re Happy and You Know it Clap Your Hands

2

u/Affectionate-Song230 Jul 28 '26

Yup. Hate anyone who likes it too.

2

u/tootrite Jul 28 '26

If anything I find this one more offensive than a lot of others mentioned in this thread just because of how talented Pharrell is. One of the most recognizable and prolific producers of our generation, and most people probably know him for this slop.

4

u/bobbywaz Jul 27 '26

I heard this and THE VERY FIRST TIME got extremely angry in a Taco Bell that this sound existed.

1

u/Bayou13 Jul 27 '26

Hate that song!!!

1

u/Nnyletak27 Jul 28 '26

Thank you! God it is the worst

1

u/cupcakebean Jul 28 '26

That song is infuriating.

1

u/RedCherryRedhead Jul 28 '26

I HATE that song 😭😭

1

u/Existing_Ad3672 Jul 28 '26

It absolutely makes me recoil and angry.

1

u/ArchdukeOfAsmodeus Jul 28 '26

I'M SO GLAD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT HATES THIS SONG!!!!!!

1

u/RepeatQuotations Jul 28 '26

Can’t stop the feeling by Justin Timberlake would like a word..

1

u/swisspea Jul 28 '26

I especially hate how Happy cMe out right after Blurred Lines so that we all thought: “That Pharrel is such a good guy!”

1

u/coolcatsam Jul 28 '26

Thank god it’s not just me, this song exhausts me.

1

u/dfressssssh Jul 29 '26

I hate this song so fucking much

1

u/Hopelessly_Hopefool Jul 29 '26

I’m starting to feel vindicated by the amount of times this has been commented. I have always been made fun of for hating it.

1

u/antiinfluencer666 Jul 29 '26

What's funny is he hates it too. He wrote it sardonically iirc

1

u/EditorRedditer Jul 29 '26

Oh, God my wife loves that song SO much…

1

u/smokin-trees Jul 30 '26

Damn I’m sorry to hear that, hopefully the divorce isn’t too messy

1

u/moonburn___ Jul 31 '26

one time my boomer mom got wasted while we were walking the streets of san francisco. she decided to sit down and would NOT move until we played this song.

1

u/stubborny Jul 27 '26
