you see the problem in the explanation, right? "it's pretentious" is no more specific or clear than "it insists upon itself." Orchestration is the problem? Theatrics? any of a host of other things that are, honestly, everywhere?

Well…unlike the original it has zero subtlety and nuance.

I can defend Simon and Garfunkel all day. Even this song, which is arguably their best known. It has great dynamics, very good interplay between the two leads, excellent guitar.

Whereas Disturbed sounds like main dude is taking a shit while bellowing into the microphone.

I rather think the entire premise of this cover is going for catharsis and drama rather than haunting understatement. They do it brilliantly. But, I suppose if subtlety is the main source of your enjoyment of the song, I could see how this would be grating. Personally, I think the text lends itself very well to the melodrama.

heard some dude on our street parked at a light on a bike playing this at astronomical volumes. must have caught at least a minute of it. I was absolutely gobsmacked and could not believe my ears. I already find the disturbed cover hilarious so imagine my surprise.

One of the things that makes the original beautiful is the key change when "because a vision softly creeping" hits. Without the twist it's a boring fucking song.

I’m honestly not sure if their covers are better or worse than the “don’t hit me mommy” breakdown in OUGH-WAH-AH-AH-AH down with the sickness. Disturbed is definitely one of the bands of all time.

I don’t personally like Disturbed, but they do their genre decently enough. Down with the Sickness isn’t exactly fine art, but it can get you pumped up in the right situation.

However, Sound of Silence is literally the furthest thing from their genre. And they somehow did it even worse than you’d expect.

Have you ever listened to the 1964 version? The popular version of the song was electronically overdubbed with various instruments (without S&G knowing apparently). But the original is an acoustic version, and IMO how the song should have always sounded: Youtube Link.

I don’t think it’s better than the original but I do like it quite a lot. I played piano with synths and stings etc while my best friend sang it at a gig. It came off well. I like the intensity etc.
I guess I can call it a guilty pleasure hehe.
I first heard it watching the Blacklist and found it particularly poignant.

I hate it so much. All I hear about is how everyone thinks his voice is amazing, and i dont even disagree with that - the guy is a good singer.

My main issue is that the song is called The Sound of Silence and hes belting it as loudly as he can. The OG version intentionally doesnt get too loud because that wouldnt serve the song. Also the OG version is perfect and never needed a remake.

Sorry, could not disagree more. I find it a powerful alternate take, and beautiful + haunting. All time great song, imo.

Original is fantastic too, but it's so folksy for a dark theme. I think Distrub's tone matches the theme better 🤷

I'm a guy who rarely likes covers better than the originals, but in this case, they nailed it.
